How disappointing! It almost seems like you could just get a cheapy smart phone and a magnifier app and get similar if not better results for around the same price and have access to a ton of other apps and tools. Thanks for sharing this!

Yes, it was pretty disappointing honestly. And yes, I bet getting a used or just budget one would probably be better.

great video hoping for a review of the new sony hx99 rnv retinal camera sony has a no questions asked 2 weeks return policy . but is sadly only available for u s residents . crying in Philippines rn haha

Carrie, thanks for this review. I'm looking for something to help with reading the occasional correspondence I get in the mail, but this doesn't look like it will do it. That magnifier app looks like a better option.

Honestly, I would really go with that unless you have a compelling reason to have a separate device with buttons. Hope it goes well!

Hey Carrie that is a great video I hope maybe you can do more videos like that. I have the desktop they are old desktop CC TVs but I need a new one they are so expensive I cannot afford a new one I don’t know why they charge so much for these things that we may need for us.

Hey John, it's great to hear from you! I hope you and your family is doing well. When you say I should do more videos like this, do you mean about magnifiers or do you mean about just reviewing assistive technology in general? Also? Thanks! And I don't know why they are so darn expensive

Will somebody please make an Android screen magnifier. My Samsung Galaxy accessibility screen magnifier is pretty useless. The minimum magnification is 200%. Need one that starts at 101% Right up to 500%. Controlled by a slider. I can't find one on Google Play Store. Does anybody know a screen magnifier please?

If the minimum is too big when using the Samsung screen magnification slider, maybe it would help to just adjust some of the font size settings or screen zoom?

Thank you for doing this video. I know this video is for the orbit magnifiers, but I wanted to say thank you for sharing the wezoom app as well at the end . I also have the S22 ultra and have been using the standard accessibility magnifier which helps, but when I tried the wezoom magnifier, I instantly fell in love with it. Wezoom I find much easier to navigate than the accessibility magnifier. Especially with pinch to zoom/magnify.

I'm so glad I mentioned it then! Also, it has Advanced gestures that are technically still in beta, but they work pretty well as long as you don't. You must talk back at the same time... It could be worth checking out. :)

Out of curiosity does something like a monocular work better or worse? Also a very large handheld heavy magnifier with lights on it, maybe with like a side boom or gimbal holder? It's a long time since I had access to some of my grandpa's magnifiers, but he had many large ones. and a few that had to stay on top of the print to work that were like heavy giant snow globe sized. I would like to experiment with some of his big circumference thick magnifying glasses he had built heavy duty wood framed handles for. He also had some table top display cases he had built himself as well with glass tops and lighting inside. He displayed a lot of tribal lore in his special fire place room, which had the biggest windows on both sides of the room to let in the most natural light as well, with the least shade. My last uses were more effective when I held magnifiers to my eye mostly with a light on whatever I was trying to look at. I had to try to relax without really trying to look at first and then just let my eyes do whatever their most relaxed constant movement was until my brain could kind of make a composition of parts to a whole until I could put my hands on whatever it was object wise. I sometimes do this to pick up outdoor building lights or other locator type clues that have lights. It sometimes works and other times does not. I think sometimes whatever I thought can end up being like mirage light canceling any real perception out. This is making me sleepy thinking about now. 😊

Yes. Those are some really cool things that your grandfather did. I'm monocular would be for distance viewing though. These types of magnifiers are for close-up. I think that DIY cctvs are great because they're a lot less expensive. I hooked my phone up to the computer monitor once but it was just kind of hard to look at one thing and control something else. But that might just be me

Carrie, are they really using mini USB ports on the magnifiers (!?). Are those devices relatively new models? The mini USB is so old now, that it is generally no longer used. Yeah, I know that they have to cut costs to achieve such prices, but still ... using such old technology...

I'd be tempted to use a magnifier app. The Google magnifier seems to be a good one. I don't have a Pixel device so sideloaded the APK and installed it in my Android 13 device. Your chances of successfully getting it to work are increased if you choose a nodpi file.

Have you tried WeZoom? I've tried the pixel magnifier app and its eh, okay I guess. I prefer WeZoom. :)

@@carrieonaccessibility I find the Google magnifier less intrusive than WeZoom or Visor.
