The shark didn't see it coming until the moment before impact. The whale is aware of the sharks field of vision, and took it by surprise. Then it ate its liver, which, I have heard, is up to a third of its total weight, the most nutritious part. (The whale must have got quite a smack in the face, hitting at that speed, presumably with its mouth open. I expect it probably lost some teeth doing so.) The average adult orca is 23-32 feet long and can weigh up to 12,000 pounds. On average, female great white sharks are 15-16 feet long and weigh 1,500-2,450 lbs, while males are only 11-13 feet long and weigh 1,151-1,700 lbs. Even the largest great white sharks only grow to be 20-21 feet long and weigh 4,000 lbs. When orcas appear in an area, sharks will leave and not return to that area for up to a year.
