Mastered mix from the new album, Kopolo. Out Now!
The Baka musicians from Gbiné have come a long way since the release of their last album Gati Bongo. Whereas none of them had ever performed outside their forest home before Gati Bongo was recorded, since it's release they have toured in UK, Belgium and Holland as well as around Cameroon and Congo. They have formed a tight rhythm section which melds with their polyphonic vocal harmonies to create their own unique style as can be heard on the new recording.
Although there is now keen competition at Gbiné to play in the band, the rhythm section has become a fixed line-up of Sangowé Elvis on drum kit, Ndia Arbitre on percussion, Barma Jean-Marie on bass and Ndeké Norbert on rhythm guitar. Pelembir Dieudonné is still the most prolific of the song-writers and dynamic of the performers, but others are treading on his heels including his son Freddie (who can be seen singing on the video of "Ewoundo". Mbeh Prosper again provides most of the lead guitar with a bit of help here and there from Baka Beyond's Martin Cradick, who also recorded it all on location deep in the rainforest near the Cameroon-Congo border and mixed and produced it at The Vortex in UK.
Although Baka Gbiné have been developing their performance of traditional music and dance, this album is another collection of contemporary guitar based songs guaranteed to get your body moving and your spirits rising. Gati Bongo has been in the iTunes World charts since its release back in 2006. It's sales have helped finance projects set up with the Baka at Gbiné and Global Music Exchange (www.1heart.org) which have really made a difference to the lives and social standing of the Baka. Every time Martin returns to Cameroon to continue work with the Baka he is asked when the next album will be ready. Well here's one track from it!

It's wonderful, é lindo demais! Never tired of hear, dance and love the magic sound of baka people. The baiaka are, maybe, the most musical people in the world. It's just like said Louis Sarno, on his book with the same name: The music of the african pigmies is one hidden treasure of mankind. I am addicted to this wonderful art since I heard for the first time the sound of the Bá-Benzele on an old lp recorded by the Musée d L'Homme. Every time I feel my eyes full of tears thinking how beautiful, rhytmic and full of life this music is. I thank you a lot , BakaBeyond staff for supporting this people and his marvellous music and show this for us. Warm hugs for you all, excuses for my bad English, and be happy.

They are the best musicians in the world. Each of them starts music training from childhood through manhood, practicing almost every single day under' moonlight, when it's not raining. true professionals then. besides collecting fruit hoiney, mushrooms, insects and hunting and fishing, they spend their time playing music and singing every evening. iMy tribe in Kribi, South Cameroon, Kwassio people and other forests people as Fang-beti and Bulu-beti we organise mortuary wake keepings inviting them to perform during whole night, and this was most enjoyment for children to watch when I was a child.

They deserve a lot. You describe them perfectly. i have been acquainted to them since my childhood in kribi, South cameroon rain forest...we have been exploiting them for our evening celebrations..deaths rituals and weddings and yet depriving them of our common land.

The Baka people. An original people now forgotten living in isolation with their ancient knowledge in their DNA. I have not just enjoyed the rhythm, I have learnt that no matter your circumstances, no matter where you are living, what you know is forever yours. Baka will be Baka.

Love this audio video recording of some very talented folks. Seems this was done on the first take which is not only astounding but testament to the deep rooted rhythms of the African Forest people. Keep it up folks! We love you, from Hawaii, USA
