How does one get into pit? I'm in the Chicagoland area and would love to be in pit but I don't know where to begin (besides my local hs shows)

Go to shows and interact with conductors, start talking about your interest and ask to be on their list. Seriously, it works. It may take a while because usually they have shows booked months in advance, but if you keep introducing yourself to people eventually you'll be working on shows pretty regularly (considering you stay local)

How do you tell the musicians to go into the pit? I'm Austrian and in German, you tell them 'bitte einsteigen' which literally translated means 'please hop in' (like you would hop on a bus for example). Is there a similar expression in English? Thanks!

well they usually come in early (like an hour or two) before the show and stay there. I don't think they do calls or something. (Well if there is I would probably imagine it as: "get in the pit")

It's something like "Ladies and Gentlemen of the Orchestra this is your call to the pit" or the less formal "Orchestra and beginners please". I've heard American stage managers use "Places" rather than "Beginners".

21 is very rare in the pit these days. Most pits have max 12 and are more combos than a real "orchestra".
