Here is what I've learnt about cutting spikes: I used to leave the spikes and they always rebloomed giving me 6, 7 or 8 beautiful flowers. When I started to cut the spikes, the new ones generated tons of flowers (about 30 flower buds on each spike!). So the main difference is the abundance of flowers. If a phalaenopsis does not make the spike, it's probably not getting enough light (sorry for my English).

Thanks for sharing your experience. I definitely feel like cutting back is better. I've just started allowing my spike to stay and feel like the second blood are not as strong. Thanks again.

Thanks for your tip! How do I get it more light if it’s already in a window?? The window never gets direct sunlight because of its location

New subscriber, thank you for this. I have 19 phals, four are spiking and I was thinking what the heck….now i believe they are just early birds. This week it is getting down to 12-15 degrees celcius so I am hoping this may shock them to produce some spikes. Hervey Bay Queensland here

I have a spike which after flowering eventually grew roots and leaves . Do I leave it or cut it off ?

Randy, have you experimented with putting your orchids in one pot? With of course the correct drainage and potting.

I’m going on 1.5 years with one of my huge gorgeous Moon Orchids with no spikes because both of the spikes were dead like your 2nd orchid, not Viola :) they were super brown and I cut them both. It’s had 3 new leaves since then and they’re very big and long but no new spikes. I have moved to Vienna, but I don’t think that’s the issue since it already didn’t spike for a year before that. It’s by a window and never gets direct Sun because of the Window’s direction. But it does get a draft sometimes because the room gets humid so I open the window. I learned about fertilizing recently, so I bought some. 3 days after first fertilization ever, my other mini Moon Orchid started spiking from a former spike that wasn’t cut. It was never brown. But I maxed out with 2 cute flowers on that one, but nothing for my larger Moon Orchid. That orchid hadn’t done anything for over a year either, so that was VERY exciting! Any thoughts or tips for the larger no spike Orchid? I repotted maybe 2 months ago for the first time. I keep watering and fertilizing literally out of hope. It’s near a window, but the window is similar to a skylight. Should I put on a shelf closer to that window?? Or is the draft the problem?

Just give it time... I have one that's blooming for the first time in 3 years. If it's growing leaves it's doing well. Be sure to watch the how and why they bloom video. Keep caring for it. it will reward you at the right time.

@@RandyMHarris 3 years, wow!! That must have been really exciting. I am learning so much and am happy to have found your channel. I binged a bunch of videos hoping to learn more about being a better caretaker. One of the biggest things I took away was boiling the medium to kill bacteria, the temperature stability and breathing ability. I ordered a hole maker for pots and sphagnum moss! Thank you for sharing your brilliance and experience

Thanks for another great video. Any recommendations for this new enthusiast who lives in Miami. I have been keeping them in perfect indirect light, temp in day at 75 (inside) and 68 at night... lots of big beautiful new leaves...not a spike to be seen. Also do I continue to fertilized during the (hopefully) blooming season?

You could just make sure it doesn’t get direct sun hitting the leaves it will burn them.
