I JUST can't get over the fact that the 'new' intro is *even* better than the old one, which I already love to death !

Take that cable and carefully separate the wires from one another in the middle. This will give you freedom of movement. It's an old trick we used to do all the time.

Very interesting card. One thing to note is it's not from Orchard, it's from Orchid (like the flower)

I used to have one of these in a IBM PC XT, and at a young age with less knowledge, I got rid of it because it stopped working. I kick myself in the butt all the time for it.

wow.... the memories. I briefly had one of those old school Compaq luggables - and it had one of these upgrade cards inside it. Sadly, I sold it to a friend around the same time my dad kept being annoyed by it sitting in the corner of my room, doing no harm at all.... rats, it would still be in my collection to this day otherwise. :D

I think we've all gotten rid of hardware at some point and wish we hadn't.

Try and get the shortest best cable for your adapter (no middle connectors) It should make things decently stable. I've had good luck with that.

The newer cables also do work especially since the interleaved extra cable pairs are grounded and can improve the signal.

This smacks of Apple ][gs and Amiga-style accelerator boards. Didn't know the PC ever got stuff like this outside of weird half-compatible things like the PC98.

i wonder if swaping 286 with pin compatybile version of 386 sx would be much of a stretch

The speed of your character in SCI engine games like Hero's Quest is sensitive to clock frequency. The game does a reasonable job of compensating but there are still noticeable differences between different clock rates. If you look closely you'll see the hero still moves faster on the 10MHz 8088 even when the 286 isn't bogged down by the background animation, yet the animation itself is less fluid and the hero covers more ground with each walk cycle to compensate.

The PC 5150, 5160, and Portable all used the same Motherboard, mand the 8088 socket was right next to the 8th slot.

Would an adaptor like this work for an AST Hotshot 286 card?

So… I’m wondering what happens when you take one of these, remove the 286 CPU and install a 286 to 486 upgrade with FPU in the socket like the one I just picked up. 😂

Somewhere in the attic I have an Orchid PCTurbo 286e accelerator card, the big sister to the Tiny Turbo. I remember the excitement of everything running so much faster when I first installed it. Any idea what it's worth nowadays?

The regular Tiny Turbo I've seen for about a $100 - $200 give or take. I've never even heard of the PCturbo 286e. on eBay, someone is asking almost $900 but I think that's a little outrageous but Id guess it's worth a hundred or more than the tiny turbo.

Cool, sounds like it would be worth digging out then. Shame I don't still have an XT to test it on.
