Hi Rick, discovering your channel is the best gift I have for the holiday., Your video shows different way of growing orchids and they make a lot of sense., I have adapted many things you taught in the video; even if they don't bloom right away, I have faith in your teaching. Many thanks, and Happy New Year. !

I've had great success with vandas.....I have around 50....some on wood, in baskets ...no fill....with bark or clay pellets....they all seem to grow and bloom well...several 2 or 3 times a year with multiple spikes occasionally also....I do have a greenhouse for winter as I am in southwestern new York state near PA boarder...but have had little problem with vandas.....yours are doing great!
@rickl.orchids7 жыл бұрын
......now the growers in Florida grow great Vanda's.......but when a guy in NY, near the PA border.....has 50 of them and they bloom all the time............guess which line I'm standing in to listen....and pay attention too.......

Vandas are my favs. I took your advice from another video by increasing the wet/dry cycles and my girls have really taken off. With the humidity and high temperatures in central Florida, I can easily get in 3 cycles per day. I am noticing growth daily. Thanks for the tips. We all have to do what works for our particular environment. Keep it coming!

they all look so happy...love those root tips...i give my Vandas lots of water in summer too...i soak them once a week when i feed them but also spray them down with the hose at least twice daily in summer, plus i give them foliar too throughout the month...i have some minatures in net pots i need to get out of..i LOVE those small wood baskets yours are in.. wish i could find 3" baskets like that..

All the vandas look healthy. Seems you are doing everything right. Many people have success with leaving Osmocote in sachets right over the roots. They get fertilized more often that way even during downpours. This tip is from My Orchid Adventures channel, the queen of Vandas ( in Florida).
@rickl.orchids7 жыл бұрын
....yes, Ive seen that way of feeding..........but there is no control with that type of fertilizer....I'm familiar with that channel, somewhat......not knocking that grower, but...hanging an orchid in a tree in South Florida....and making it grow..........doesn't take much skill in my book.........the guy in Anchorage Alaska, growing orchids in a shed in 5' of snow.........thats the guy I want to listen too.....
@ResQuetzal7 жыл бұрын
Yes I agree but people who grow Vandas in Florida are concerned with HOW many times a year they bloom, not IF they bloom. They are concerned with number of spikes at one single time as well. Being in Canada, I'd be happy with flowers once a year. I came close to buying some slow release fertilizer for my Vandas but couldn't justify it. I could fertilize every time I water (almost every day for the ones outside)so, I don't see how those sachets could help in my case. I'll be following closely to see what advice you get. Good luck with the Vandas!
@rickl.orchids7 жыл бұрын
......great points......and Im not knocking the method or grower , not at all, her show is pure entertainment, she knows how to work a camera.....not many like that......the osmocoat is a temp release fertilizer.....if I lived in Florida......i may use it for the convenience, I can see that for sure.......like I say in my other shows........i want to teach people to grow, understand the process..........then you can decide what and how you want to fertilize on your own...I think its wrong to tell someone to use such and such fertilizer.....everyone needs to pick what works for their grow set up..........hope that makes sense somewhat.....

Hi Rick, only a week ago I got my first band after many years. The vendor had put it in compost and I noticed 2 good fat roots outside the dirt, so I bought it. There at the garden centre I took the plant out of the soil and washed it. I noticed all the roots inside the compost were black and rotten. In my home I hung it at the spot where it received good wind but filtered light. I started watering it by spraying 3 times in the morning with half an hour gap, and once in the evening. There were 9 small knubs on the 2 roots now after a week there are 18 and they all are gaining size and length. I think it needs watering spread over at least 2 hours ideally in the morning and it must be bone dry at least once during the 24 hour period. I avoid dunking it completely lest it gets fungus or something.

Vandas are like phals...…..they don't have canes or bulbs for storing reserves so they need a very steady supply of nutrients...…….and they love calcium.....you doing great, keep up the good work.

Not Vanda related Ric, but when you talk of gravel and lava rock, could you substitute gravel for hydroton clay pebbles, I gave a ton of those, but have run out of my decorative gravel. Thanks and, as always, grateful.

You're going to love that Ascocenda once she starts pushing out roots... I just noticed one of mine in bud earlier today so maybe It'll start opening soon. If so, I'll shoot a vid. They're fast growers, too. Though I do not pot or grow Vandas on wood, I strongly agree they do love their contact with wood and they will easilly reach to cling on to it if nearby...

Cindy D. ... As Rick and others have noted; we're all here on KZbin to learn from eachother no matter how differently each and every one of us may grow our orchids and, even if some methods may not suit everyone, exactly, we walk away knowing so much more... especially when reading others' comments. Thanks, Cindy.

Aug 19, 2017 Orchids my vandas. Aloha Rick. I attended a plant show and purchased 5 keiki vanda plants. I would like to transplant them into baskets. I noticed some of the roots are damaged and some might get damaged by me from removing it. Do you think the roots are forgiving and can withstand being damaged? I've had some on fern trees and they did fine. I don't have any fern trees anymore.
@rickl.orchids6 жыл бұрын
.......yes they will grow new roots.........it happens when re-potting......some additional Calcium and a few drops of Kelp or seaweed, and they will bounce back fast........they need Calcium for those roots......

Dear Rick, thanks for another informative video. I have a question for you: when you soak your vandas, do you allow the entire plant to be covered by water or just the roots?

Greetings from Canada....I have several Vandas. . One is a roberts delight strawberry that I have for a few years and find it hard to get it to bloom.....I have heard they have to reach a hight of 18 inches before any blooming...I'm getting there slowly....Anybody have any suggestions?

I have one vanda with absolutely no roots! I bought it on sale at a Lowes store. right now I have it in a plastic bag with wet sphagnum moss around it for humidity. I'm not seeing any changes as far as root growth. I've been trying to get roots for quite a while and still nothing. any suggestions that I should try other than a bag?
@rickl.orchids6 жыл бұрын
......plants ....and we are talking orchids here......can absorb nutrients thru their leaves anywhere from 5-15x more than roots......nutrients are circulating thru their system with in a hour of foliar spraying........take the Vanda and drop it in a bucket with the best water you can find.....rainwater is best, add some calmag, and some kelp or seaweed.......tiny amounts of both.....let it soak over night......then let it dry for a day or so......then repeat......see if it pops out roots...if no kelp or seaweed add a few drops of lemon juice.......just a few......the lemon will add a tiny bit of K and it helps with hydration.....let me know how it does...i would remove it from the bag so it can exchange gases correctly, and the moss, which is low in ph may prohibit from absorbing calcium.....they will not grow roots with out a supply of absorbable calcium around them....

Good morning Rick. 🍞🍉Vandas are among my favorites! They usually respond very fast to any change; those plants are a pleasure to grow. And their blooms are majestic! I have 14 or 15 vandas (in a condominium! but on a south facing window), with 2 humidifiers running 24 hours a day trying to keep, at least, 70-75 % around them... and they bloom regularly. Right now, 3 are in bloom (and among them: Euanthe sanderiana, a species that is usually reluctant to produce flowers in my environment). Like you, I water almost each day and feed them once every two waterings. With love, care - and lots of sun - they reward us like no other. 😉 Have a beautiful day!
