Beautiful blooms, the best I've seen for Stanhopea ruckeri. I've just re-potted a recently purchased Stanhopea tigrana into a green PVC coated wire mesh basket, 1 inch by 1 inch mesh size. Medium bark, NZ moss and clay pebbles. My first attempt to grow Stanhopea. I just love that they are so unusual.

That sounds like a good potting mix. If this is your first attempt, just remember the number one rule: Water the heck out of them! Best of luck :) -Jason

Great information! Would it be possible to grow in a basket that is slipped into a larger solid pot with the eventual removal of the solid pot as the flowering season approaches?

Hi Jason, thanks for sharing lovely blooms and the care tips! I wish I knew this earlier! All videos I watched in the past, mentioned that Stanhopia must be grown in basket and I think that's what killed mine because of being dried out too much. The other thing was mine which I had it for three years never bloomed for me. It was s.tigrena. Is there any easy blooming Stanhopia to recommend, please?

Yes, it is very common to under water Stanhopea. They do not need baskets to grow or flower, though as I mentioned you may get more flower spikes in a basket. Stan. tigrina is a fairly good grower, and blooms between July and October in most cases. We have a new hybrid called Michael Bloyer x martiana, which is growing very fast and is recommended if you want to try something new! Overall, I think increasing the water will solve your problem.
