I know this is 5 whole years later but I’m binging this. Is there an explanation as to why this is the convention that was settled upon? Like why this specific order and not a different one?
@TheDefterus Жыл бұрын
I was actually sort of upset to not have it mentioned in the video, but your hunch is right, there's a good reason for this specific order. It comes down to properties and definitions of operations that are covered in more detail in different videos. To make a concrete example, consider 6 + 4 * 2. Blindly following PEMDAS, 6 + 8 = 14, which is correct. But more importantly, multiplication is repeated addition. You could just write 4 * 2 as 2 + 2 + 2 +2, the order for 6 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 is obvious, or rather irrelevant. you can do the those five additions in any order, because of it's cumulative property. Parenthesis are not even operations, simply ways to show stuff like 4 * 2 as something like (1 + 3) * 2 for situations where it makes sense. If you didn't know pemdas or had the more useful general understanding, you might do 6 + 4, THEN * 2. But notice, that would change the fundamentals of the question. (6 + 4) * (2) is not the same as (6) + (4 * 2), because addition and multiplication can not be rewritten this way while keeping the same end result. The notation we are using in modernity is just that, notation. If we only teach a way to read it "aloud", instead of what it actually says, a lot of the use is lost in my opinion. Another qualm I have with PEMDAS, is that Division is actually just multiplication by the inverse of the number you used for the division. 5/2 is really just 5 * 2^(-1). Subtraction is actually just addition by the negative of the number you used for the addition. 5 - 2 is really just 5 + (-2). There's historical and higher concept reasons for not generalizing like this in every case, but it's not like those are taught in school before you learn of PEMDAS anyway. If you consider only Exponentiation, Multiplication and Addition, the reason for the order is a lot clearer. E is Many M, M is many A, so we go from the top until everything is just addition. When doing algebra it's useful to go the other direction sometimes, and group additions into multiplications to solve more difficult problems, but the point is to preserve the value of the line while computing things, not to stick to an order handed down from on high. If you were to come up with a different order that is as rigorous as PEMDAS's origins, you would have to redefine/restructure these operations in a way that changes their properties, basically start a completely new math.

Overall: The "PEMDAS rule" is supposed to help you remember to finish all multiplication and division before you do any addition and subtraction. You can in fact do division and multiplication in any order you like. Then you can do addition and subtraction in any order you like. PEMDAS is a nice help, but is not the whole story. (try it out! for example (2*3)/6 and (2/6)*3 or any combination you like!) For you first question: If you take what I said above into account we get 15 + 25 = 40 40 - 54 = -14 -14 + 8 = -6 Another way to look at it is that everything is addition: 15 + 25 + (-54) + 8 = -6 (Dave explains this consept in his video on negative numbers) For you second question: Why don't I show you how I would do it, and you can compare it to what you tried: 12/4 + 2(1 + 3)^2 - 9 12/4 + 2(4)^2 - 9 -> Parenthesis 12/4 + 2(16) - 9 -> Exponent (also I notice the implied multiplication between 2 and 16 for my next step) 3 + 32 - 9 -> Multiply and Divide 26 -> Add and Subtract I hope this was more helpfull than confusing!
@omerkaya545 Жыл бұрын
If it helpful to think of PEMDAS as: P -> E -> MD -> A? First doing parentheses left to right. Then doing all exponents from left to right. Then doing all multiplication and division from left to right. Then doing all additional from left to right. There would be no subtraction because would force ourselves to see would be subtractions as additions of negative numbers?

calculate from left to right. 15 + 25 = 25 then 25 - 54 = -16 -16 + 8 = -6 Think your mistake is that you take -54 then you "plus" 8 making - 54 into - 62. Remember the number line: -(minus) ________-54_________0_________+8_____+(plus)> the negative -54 moves into 8 of the positive direction and becomes -44 and not -62 Hope that helps.
@mattbakker93393 жыл бұрын
@@itsallaboutfeeling i think she is confused about how pemdas is calculated in the equation because if you follow pemdas its 15+25 then 54+8 then 40-62 = -22 which is what i got. i think we need a new way of doing these freaken equations because if you follow pemdas to the tee you get the wrong answer
@0Coeus3 жыл бұрын
@@mattbakker9339 While you do get the correct answer if you follow pemdas, I can see your point about how it is confusing. Dave does not touch on it in this video, but another way to look at it is if consider all the addition and subtraction as addition: 15 + 25 + (-54) + 8 (Dave explains this in his negative numbers video). Like you said though, this is not at all apparent from the pemdas acronym alone. A final thing to note: while pemdas calls for multiplication before division, they are in fact interchangeable. The same goes for addition and subtraction. This nuance makes for a poor memory cheat though, so you have to pick one, and I suspect they went with pemdas for no other reason than it rolls off the tounge easier than pedmsa :)

it's been 5 months but hopefully you still see this: PEMDAS despite having 6 letters for each operation really only has 4 steps, and should be better written as P-E-MD-AS; that's because what really happens is: 1. Solve parentheses left to right 2. Solve exponentiations left to right 3. Solve multiplication AND division left to right 4. Solve addition AND subtraction left to right The common error lies in solving multiplications then divisions, or solving additions then subtractions, when in reality they are both done in the same step, in order left to right.

I used PEDMAS & repeated the question a few times to see if I can get 10, but I still get 6. Please tell me what I’m doing wrong. Because as far as I know, you do the brackets first (4-7) which gives you -3. Then you skip exponents & multiplication because there are no exponents & there’s nothing to multiply. So next we do division which is 4/2 which equals 2. Next is addition so we do -3 + 2 which equals -1. And last we do substation so basically 5- -1 which you 6. So the answer to 5- (4-7)+4/2= 6 But apparently I’m wrong. Pls explain what I’m doing wrong😭 EDIT: I don’t know why my writing has a cross line on it, my bad💀 just know that I didn’t do it on purpose lmao

@@petersearls4443 if I can ask, in 12/4 +2 (1+3)^2 -9, where is the multiplication coming from? I'm solving the paranthesis, applying the exponent for 16, doing the division and addition for a result of 5, giving me 21, then subtracting the 9 for a result of 12. Do the brackets somehow add multiplication to it? I've tried watching notation videos and searching but can't seem to turn up much useful.

@Drco_mM9 ай бұрын
Simple bro frist do parentheses 4-7 =-3,then do division 4/2=2 ,then 5-(-3) is same as 5 +3 therefore 5 + 3 =8 then add 2
@ItG88236 ай бұрын
- and a - number is seen as addition, which means you do not perform the later addition first instead simply left to right because it is all interpreted as addition.

Question what is the answer to this problem 60/5(7-5) I get 24 some say 6
@ProfessorDaveExplains7 жыл бұрын
well it's a little ambiguous as you've written it. if (7-5) is meant to be on the denominator of the fraction multiplying the 5, then the answer is 6. if 60/5 is a fraction multiplying a separate term of (7-5), then the answer is 24.

@Eli_Is_Cool4 жыл бұрын
The reasoning is arbitrary, the mathematicians decided to do it in this order simply to keep things constant.

Thats the beauty of math, just like any game we invent, we make the rules. But once the rules are set and we start playing, you can't change them as you play :) So why do we spend so much time on this game (math) in school over others like say.. chess? Well it turns out math is not only fun, but also very usefull.

weres the operation in the 3(11 and 2(1+ bruhhhhhhhh
@0Coeus3 жыл бұрын
When nothing is written we assume that the operation is multiplication. So we get 3(11-9) = 3*(11-9) and 2(1+3) = 2*(1+3). But remember to resolve the parenthesis first, 2*(4)! Why do we do this? It is simply because we are lazy, and want to write is as simply as possible. Just like we would rather write 5*5 instead of 5+5+5+5+5. It may seem confusing at first, but you get used to it, and it is very helpfull when the equations get more complicated :)
