I am deaf so I don't know if you explained this but BODMAS/BIDMAS and PEMDAS should both give one as long as people have proper understanding of both (the answer is 1) BODMAS/BIDMAS 8÷2(2+2) 8÷2(4) 8÷8=1 This is because with this method people are taught that the 2(4) portion of the equation is to be solved as a bracket not multiplication Whereas with PEDMAS it is required to have a better understanding of mathematics. Which leads to the equation being cleared up in the exponents part of PEDMAS. I will go on and explain this First people need to remember that every number which does not have a exponent shown is by default has a exponent of 1 (a=a¹), so now onto the equation 8÷2(2+2) 8 ¹÷2¹(2+2)¹ 8¹÷2¹(4)¹ 8¹÷2¹4¹ From here people need to remember the rules of exponents. More specifically the product rules of exponents. This states that if the base numbers are the same but exponents are different you add the exponents (a¹a³=a⁴), which is one of the product rules but not the one we are going to use. The product rule we use here is when the base number is different but the exponent is the same. This rule states a¹b¹=(a×b)¹ a²b²=(a×b)² So back to the equation 8¹÷2¹4¹ 8¹÷(2×4)¹ 8¹÷(8)¹ 8÷8=1 To recap in brief when using PEDMAS people have to remember 2 things 1) a¹=a even if it is not shown on the paper it is always there 2) the rules of exponents, in this case one of the two product rules Whereas those who use BODMAS/BIDMAS only have to remember a(b) = (a(b)) I hope this helps people as every time I see this problem brought up over the years no one explain how both methods work and why both should give the same answer
@AvinashMathsHub4 жыл бұрын
When you said 'This is because with this method people are taught that the 2(4) portion of the equation is to be solved as a bracket not multiplication' , 2 isn't legitimately in a bracket so it counts as normal in BODMAS D is before M (Go Left to right) , so 8 ÷ 2 is 4. So then 4x4 is 16.

I don't understand most of what you said, but I understood enough to know you didn't fact check what you heard about 1917, so I'm gonna do that for you - well, for the people reading - but first... You ALSO forgot about The Distributive Law - a(b+c)=(ab+ac). This isn't "multiplication", it's DISTRIBUTION, it's BRACKETS. It's the reverse process to Factorising. 8/2(2+2)=8/(4+4)=8/8=1 - the ONLY correct answer. You can also do inside brackets first, as long as you still distribute BEFORE REMOVING BRACKETS (this is the literal wording of The Distributive Law - you MUST Distribute before removing Brackets)... 8/2(2+2)=8/2(4)=8/(2x4)=8/8=1 8/2x4 is wrong, because you've removed the brackets when there was still more than 1 Term inside. You can ONLY do 8/(2x4). Now, 1917 - the rules did NOT change in 1917, and even if they HAD it would STILL mean the answer is 1! Lennes wrote a letter to a Maths journal (this is what people are referring to when they say "1917"). He didn't understand Terms and thought they were "multiplication". They're not. i.e. ab=(axb), NOT axb. Look familiar? The brackets make a difference. It makes it Brackets, rather than "Multiplication" which in fact refers LITERALLY to Multiplication SIGNS, and NOTHING ELSE (note that there's no multiplication signs in 8/2(2+2)). Anyway, he proposed a NEW rule - do ALL multiplication BEFORE division. It was never adopted - everyone else understood how Terms worked - but if it WAS then 8/2x4 would equal 1! Because you'd do the multiplication first! 8/2x4=8/8=1! And as we've seen, it was - and is - equal to 1 even without the alleged rule change. So, everything you said was wrong. Next time you wanna make a video with disinformation in it, maybe check your facts first! This includes looking in Maths textbooks! For more info on this - including a link to a copy of Lennes' letter, textbook screenshots of The Distributive law, proofs, memes, etc. - search for Smartman Apps order of operations, and you'll find my order of operations thread with all of this and more in it. Everything I post is fact-checked.
@Of_UnCommon_Sense Жыл бұрын
There is a very easy way to do this. There are several paths to 1 as the only correct answer. But this is the easiest. For those long and difficult equations we normally break them into segments. Splitting this terribly complicated equation into segments, is a method that is INCONTROVERTIBLE. [Look for explicit operators not enclosed in brackets, then put brackets around each segment.] There is only the divisor. This simplifies and clarifies this long and tedious equation. i.e. 8 / 2(2+2) -> [8] / [2(2+2)] Now we clearly see it is 8 / 8 = 1 For people who do not understand parenthesis, this avoids the silly question of what to do 1st. Alternately: When you write an integer in front of a set of brackets it means everything INSIDE the brackets is to be multiplied by that integer, INSIDE the brackets via the distributive property of multiplication. I.E. 2(4)=(2X4) Simply dropping the brackets results in 24. This is not 2x4 as you can not say it is juxtaposition multiplication because two digits together is simply a two digit number. And you can not replace brackets with an explicit multiply. (2x2+2x2) = 2(2+2) Writing it in this fashion does not change the value or meaning of the expression it is just a shorter way to write the EXACT SAME thing. The integer leading the parenthesis actually exists ONLY within the parenthesis. [Even tho it is written outside.] It must be returned to the interior of the parenthesis when you go to evaluate them. You can not take this [non-existent] integer and use it with another operation as it's existence lies only within the parenthesis. So 8 / 2[2+2] = 8 / (2x2+2x2) = 8 / (8) = 8 / 8 = 1

The reason people go wrong here is that they fail to maintain parenthesis. The multiplication[s] occur within the parenthesis. The 2 outside the parenthesis is not a term but a mnemonic telling us to multiply everything inside the parenthesis by that number. 2[4] = [2x4] = [8] = 8 Maintain your parenthesis till solved. !!!

Simply instead of using ÷ it was already written on upon because what if (2+2) is in denomentor it is really confusing both answer are correct it depends on where is (2+2) in numerator or denomenator
@smartmanapps5588Ай бұрын
"what if (2+2) is in denomentor" - it is, because 2(2+2) is a single Term. The expression reads 8 divided by 2(2+2). "both answer are correct" - no, 1 is the only correct answer. It's not the same as 8/2x(2+2), which is equal to 16.
