I was in Scouts when I was young and my dad had everything to do with it. Glad I could be a part and it taught us many things, most importantly, how to be good men. My dad passed about 8 years ago now, I miss him, but I wonder of I will ever be able to pass down all the things to my family that my father passed down to me. That gen was the best of the best.

For those who do not know: The Order of the Arrow is a service organization within the Boy Scouts of America. Camp Josepho located in the Santa Monica Mountains, and was operated as a camp of the Crescent Bay Area Council (representing scouts from the area from Malibu, through west side of LA down to Culver City, Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, WLA, Palms, MDRey, Venice) up until 1972. Anatol Josepho the inventor of the photo booth &donated the Camp Josepho property to BSA. Great history there.

Order of the Arrow many years ago. Went to Camp Josepho and the Lodge there many times many years ago. Member of Troop 57 in Culver City/Palms and 218 as an Explover Scout. Still an Eagle! Thanks to bringing back memories of simpler and better tims.

I went through Ordeal 17 years ago, and I thought what I went through then was rough. I bet it was a cake walk compared to what these young men did. But did you see how proud he was after he was tapped? I guarantee it was worth it to him.

MtnManSam, indeed. However, this is the pre-ordeal tapout. The actual ordeal ceremony can only be filmed for safety and legal reasons (and not even that back in ‘44) and is not allowed on YT (although someone posted it anyway).

I think the LA location tells us why the quality is so high. Filming around a campfire is still technically difficult. Good bye to shoulder "taps" ,exposed buttocks and face paint.

This film was produced and narrated by James A. Fitzpatrick (1894-1980) a professional film maker who was known for producing and narrating his Travel Talks short films in color, released through MGM from the 1930s through the 1950s, many of which can still be seen on Turner Classic Movies. That's why this film looks so professional. This was apparently done by Fitzpatrick as a special project for the Boy Scouts. I don't know if he was hired to do it or donated his services. This is just the conclusion. The entire 15 minute film is available elsewhere on KZbin. An interesting time capsule. As this film dates from 1944, I wonder how many of these young served in the last stages of Would War ll or in the Korean War a few years later. And how many may have been killed?

OA today is unfortunately watered down. I was tapped out in 1983. Legal disputes, Woosie mommas and daddys and people who just don't appreciate traditions. BSA today is a mirror of our weakened society. Its all about participation ribbons and trophies for every little kid. Sad to see the BSA in such a state as it is today. RIP BSA. Eagle Scout 1985.

derdachshund I just aged out of scouts and I can tell you my experience was one of disappointment and sadness. I saw a group of little girls and weird gamer kids. There was no boyish attitude, no toughness and no manliness. When I went out to get my wilderness survival merrit badge at scout camp I was appalled at the amount of kids who quit and weny back to their camp sights after staying in a shelter outside of a regular tent. I am even more saddened by Scout leaders who allow such laziness and wimpiness to be taught in the scout program. The scout program is a sad shell of what it used to be.

The Scouts need more Native American involvement of proper education each Troop needs to be certified by an updated use of policies and procedures by a Native American Group of leaders like many things in life a good plan now yet, we need a better plan. Until then I and other help educate on what we with our Native American Managed 501c3 we/I support it along with native elders who participate in the ceremonies and lectures.

This video and this gross representation of Native American culture is highly offensive and racist. As a Native American and former Boy Scout this video is offensive.

I've been a member of the Order of the Arrow for over 25 years, believe me, you'll never find a group that is more respectful of Native American culture and history than them. Not to mention that there are hundreds of Native Americans that are members of the Order and are active in these ceremonies, if you find it offensive it just means that you have no idea what they stand for or do.
