The first 1000 people to click the link will get a free trial of Skillshare’s Premium Membership: skl.sh/xiaomanyc11201 So this week I tipped $5,000 at some of my absolute favorite Chinese takeout spots in New York City. The whole restaurant industry in New York City has been devastated by COVID and Chinese restaurants have been particularly hard-hit. So I wanted to give them a nice tip to show them how much we love and support them here at Xiaomanyc! Especially because it's Chinese New Year and it's a perfect time to give these restaurants some nice red envelopes. If you would like to get out there and support these NYC restaurants yourself, here are links to their pages on Yelp. Most are located in NYC’s Manhattan Chinatown. They are all awesome and highly recommended!
Spicy Village for utterly delicious spicy noodles: www.yelp.com/biz/spicy-villag...

Well, most are not fake, i don't think. Still, that doesn't mean they don't do it for the views. Xiaoman could have just donated without the camera on at all, and never tell us. He could have just shown footage of the restaurant, and encouraged people to patronize them while they struggled during the pandemic, while giving money off-camera. But he chose to record it. The last guy was on to something. While Xiaoman gave a real donation, he also did it for the views, and the tea guy was well aware of this. They all do it for the views. If they didn't, they wouldn't record it.

My wife and I did this a few years back at a small mom and pop Chinese restaurant. It was around Christmas and we wanted to do something nice for them as they work harder then most restaurants in the area and their food is always amazing, so my wife suggested we make their holiday a wonderful one. I went to the bank before we headed to the restaurant, withdrew $4000 and we gifted it to them after we finished our meal. They tried to give it back as most of these wonderful people did, but we explained that it was for them and their many years of kindness and amazing food. They eventually accepted the money. Come spring time, they used the money to re paint the front of their restaurant, and they had an artist hand paint their businesses name in Chinese with a beautiful Koi fish right under the name. They still to this day express their gratefulness every time we enter through those doors. We are happy we made them happy. I wish more people spread this kind of love and joy for people like them.

The first lady broke my heart, she stated that she cannot cover her expenses but still took the time to give extras to her customers, which in itself says a lot about her as a person. I encourage everyone who lives close by to support businesses like hers through the tough times so that they can continue to serve the community. Save the businesses who care about customers over profit and we will all win as a result of that. This pandemic brought out not only the worst but the best in people and it is clear this lady deserves a fighting chance. Kindness is also infectious, pay it forward. Life is good, share it with good people!

I completely agree, many times these restaurant owners do things that the locals are not aware of. While staying in San Diego I was looking for restaurants that would donate food for the homeless and met a gentleman who owns a Chinese restaurant, he and his family make meals (large soup, rice, protein, vegs, and drink) and feed about 50 people 5 times a week. I have no idea how they do it, but they do, and just thought that was incredible. What incredible people with such a huge heart.

It speaks to the proud culture of the Chinese people while others would just accept it (and yes say thank you) but the instance on all of them reufsing, saying they cannot do this....that is not only what Chinese culture is about, but alsoooooo part of the American Dream. Chinese-Americans/Chinese folks in general work their butts off; and I am truly heartfelt to see that people who were in a need (because YOU know these businesses) genuinely were grateful and not wanting a dang thing in return. Hey man. Thanks for helping out my community. A lot of times Chinese family businesses struggle, especially with increasing gentrification and the rise of hipster immigration into cheaper neighborhoods. Its heartbreaking to see a family breaking their backs… mothers, fathers, grandmas sweating and bleeding to try and compete with big pharmaceutical companies or something like a Whole Foods/Starbucks. Thanks for taking the time to understand, connect with, speak with, and help these people. Some say Chinese is a race, but the truth is there is a lot of philosophy and kindness in the culture that it could almost be a lifestyle. I am glad you showed that side of my people and my culture. If you ever get a chance, and if you haven’t already, I’d recommend a dumpling store on Hester and Allen street. There is an old man there and his family who hand makes dumplings to order. They aren’t struggling, in fact they are doing pretty good and are popular with the new hipster immigrants. But he is a legend that’s been feeding CTown in NYC since I was a kid (over 20 years) and still does the same back breaking work to give kids affordable school lunches. I am sure he’d make for a great video.

Because they know hardships and appreciate being in America, land of opportunity. I came to USA with my parents in 1988, we were refugees if still Soviet then Latvia. We slept on floor and only furniture we had was stuff my Stepdad and I found in trash drop offs on curb in Brooklyn. Now my parents have traveled the world and live in a nice condo in New Jersey. All from working hard and striving for better life in Freedoms this country offers. Many born here dont know how fortunate they are. I made sure to teach my children that so now as teenagers they know that they can be anything their hearts desire.

I was lucky growing up in a pretty well to do family in the nicest areas in Florida. I had neighbors who were Asian and they were the best neighbors, they were very respectful of American Christian holidays and they even joined in stuff like Halloween and Easter egg hunts. I shocked my family by joining the military and it's caused a horrible friction between them and I for many years. Mostly because of my privileges afforded to me growing up but it was something that was meaningful to me because I felt I owed my country my service because of what our country offers us. I served with several Asian guys that I even went to combat with. Those guys were as patriotic as the best of us and I still stay in contact with one of them to this day. I play a game on my iPad called Boom Beach and I'm even in an all Chinese clan and I've been with them for about a year now and I've been playing for about 4 years total. I learn so much from them about their culture and what it's like over there. It's a 50 person clan so we're all pretty active. With all the talk about racism and slavery that we had here in the US, people never mention the slavery that the Asians went through here in our country when they were first here. They were forced into mining, building railroads and agricultural. They have risen up from those days and have been loyal Americans ever since and I'm happy to have been lucky my enough to called some of them my friend.
