The type of axolotl is leucistic. Lacks dark pigment but is not albino. They prefer cold water. They will eat any fish you put in the tank with them. If the fish is too big to consume, the fish will nip at the axolotls gills. Based on the size of the fish compare to axolotl, I would recommend removing the fish.

Hey guys, love your videos! I actually have an axolotl for about a year and a half now. I recommend separating him from the goldfish, since they tend to nibble on the axolotls gills. Axolotls are creatures that mostly live in isolation. They could be paired with other axolotls but even then, they sometimes end up biting each others limbs off

Tip for axolotls after getting it in the tank try not to pick it up as much bc it makes them stressed and sometimes they could die I recommend when cleaning the tank take the axolotl out with yours hands but quickly put it in a bucket filed with the right water temperature and when your done cleaning the tank quickly put it back in the tank

His gills will grow back IF looked after properly, they become really friendly and will hand feed from you but please don't feed him blood worms, good foods are things like river shrimp, earth worms even small pieces of meat can be fed as a treat. He needs more hides in the tank and plants (even fake ones would do but live would be better, put the plants in baskets instead of the substrate or they will get dug up quickly) if he doesn't feel secure he will stay in his one hide alot so more hides will make him come out more

Bloodworms are not healthy for axolotls. An adult axolotl should be given different earthworm varieties, red wigglers, and sinking carnivore pellets as a healthy diet. Bloodworms are to axolotls as fast food is to humans, basically. You guys are also being very rough with that axolotl's shipping bag. It just got sent possibly hundreds of miles in a plastic bag, and now you're shaking it around and yelling at it. You can of course be excited, but be gentle about it. It's only a little dude. And whoever you got that axolotl from is also not taking good care of their animals. It's missing half of its gills, signifying being kept in bad water parameters, high temperatures, and/or in highly stressful conditions. He/she may have columnaris or saprolegnia on the gills. Columnaris is grey-white and wispy. Saprolegnia is also grey-white, but is spiky and only grows out of necrotic tissue. The treatments for columnaris and saprolegnia are different, and axolotls also cannot be given the same dosages for these as fish. Please look into these two types of infections for the wellbeing of your axolotl. As for keeping an axolotl with fish, that is an absolute heck no. No matter the type of fish, the fish can tear off the axolotl's gills and potentially kill it. Large enough fish could eat axolotls or their limbs, and that goldfish is going to get huge. It's also dangerous if the axolotl attacks the fish. Eating too much fish can cause vitamin deficiencies in axolotls, which, of course, is very unhealthy. Some fish also are choking hazards or have spikes that can rupture their internal organs. Your axolotl is also much too small to be on sand. Axolotls can only be placed on sand once they are over 6 inches long. If you absolutely cannot avoid having a small axolotl on sand, drop their food on an aquarium safe tray/bowl/plate so they do not ingest any. Sand is a risk for impaction in small axolotls. As for the tank itself, it needs more for the axolotl to do. Consider more aquarium safe hides, live plants, a bubbler, and driftwood. Your 55 gallon tank also isn't truly 55 gallons since you only filled it maybe like 1/3 up. It's around 18 gallons of actual water, maybe less. Axolotls need at least 29 gallons of water, preferably 40+. You can fill the tank up higher. The axolotl will still be able to swim up for air. The more waste dilution, the better. Most importantly, please ensure that you have adequate filtration and temperature. An axolotl is a critter with a very high bioload, and so are goldfish. The temperature will also need to be between 60-66 F for the axolotl to stay healthy.

Please separate the goldfish from the axolotl :( They can't be housed together. You can house the same gender axolotl but only if it's the same size which you can't tell the gender till about 18 months. If want to get 'tank mates' other then another axolotl then swordtail, endlers, platties, guppies, ghost shrimp and cherry shrimp are okay and will offer them little snacks. Plecos, catfish, goldfish, shiners, white sucker's, and minnows are a big no no. Reason being is because they can thiaminase which breaks down and inactivates Thiamin(Vitamin B1) and if fed large doses or long period of time it can cause severe deficiency. Certain earthworms are best for feeding and then bloodworms only as a treat. Best temperature is 63/64, not below 55 and not above 65. They need a gentle filter like a sponge filter that doesn't give off to much current as well as more hiding places but big enough so it won't get stuck but the hides need to be smooth and not bleed out their color

Thiaminase breaks down and inactivates Thiamin(Vitamin b1) and if fed in large doses or for a while it will eventually cause deficiency in vitamin B1 in the axolotl which can be fatal. You can however house/give them swordtail, endlers, platties, guppies, ghost shrimp and/or cherry shrimp. Not trying to be rude, just tryna help your little one live long and happy :)
