ok. Oikawa didn’t go to shiratorizawa NOT just because he wanted to beat ushiwaka, that was part of it. But i’m sure he wanted to prove you can go to nationals and be successful and not solely rely on natural talent (ushiwaka). That you can be successful with hard work and dedication. You see, shiratorizawa relies on ushiwaka. That’s why it’s represented as a single eagle. They use their skills to help ushiwaka. Oikawa treated kageyama badly but that’s because he was jealous of kageyama and his natural talent. Oikawa doesn’t have natural talent, he over-works himself and is stressed. He acts all prideful to hide his insecurities. He’s constantly thinking he’s not good enough. He actually considered quitting volleyball because of it. Until a guy told him he should accept the fact he’s not a prodigy but still work hard and achieve his goals. Beating natural talent isn’t IMPOSSIBLE, it just requires a lot... and i mean A LOT of hard work. Which is what Oikawa wants to do. i really like oikawa lol. It’s fine if you don’t but yeah edit: I also wanted to point out. Nadia mentions oikawa doesn’t fully understand what Iwaizumi said about, ‘there’s six people on the court’ and all he wants to do is beat ushiwaka. I mentioned above about him and ushiwaka. Oikawa was like that for most of his middle school years. When Iwaizumi told him sternly about how it’s not all about him and that there’s six people on the court, THAT’S when oikawa changed. He started bringing the best out of his teammates. Because at the end, it’s the team with the best 6 that win. Yes, ushiwaka is really good but he’s not the only one in Shiratorizawa. Oikawa began to adjust to his teammates and bring the best out of them. But in the end of middle school they didn’t beat Shiratorizawa, HOWEVER they did place 2nd. And Oikawa won the best setter award. Just shows what Iwaizumi said was right. Fast forward to his 3rd year of high school, he’s still known for bringing the best out of his teammates and is still a great captain.

I don't know how the dubbed version did it, but oikawa didn't like referring to kageyama as his protege. I even remember oikawa denying it every time iwaizumi refers to kageyama as oikawa's protege. Oikawa just called kageyama his kouhai. Also oikawa was never shown to bully kageyama. He just didn't like it when kageyama approached him. Bullying is totally different from that 😤😤

my fav part about haikyuu is that it makes you love almost all of its characters, not only giving them a backstory and development, but making them appear in scenes apart from the matches so that you don't see them always as rivals but as the highschool students they are. also, i get that you don't like oikawa but I think that if you read the manga, you'll probably end up loving him at least a little bit!!

Honestly, Date Tech is probably my favorite team in the whole show. Aone's just such a teddy bear after you get past how huge and intimidating he is. (I mean, he's basically an albino blocker version of Ushijima who talks even less than he does.) It's always hilarious how he pushes his teammates apart when they start arguing. It was so cute how after first losing to Karasuno, he actually becomes friends with little Hinata, and they bow to each other every other time they meet afterwards. I still headcanon that he was going to try and save Hinata from Oikawa, Iwaizumi, and Ushijima at the Bathroom of Doom incident had the situation really gone south. I almost screamed when Aone actually spoke up for Hinata during Karasuno's match with Johzenji and openly talked to him after the match. It's heavily implied that Hinata's friendship with Aone directly affects his eventual friendship with Koganegawa, too. He and Sakunami are totally like Inuoka and Shibayama from Nekoma and you can't convince me otherwise.

i think the whole "oikawa called kageyama his protege but he never gave him the time of day" thing is actually a mistranslation from the dub?? bc i only ever watched the japanese dub and read the manga, and oikawa only ever referred to kageyama as a "kohai," but only in the sense they went to the same middle school and were on the same middle school team (not as like a mentor-pupil relationship, just a standard upperclassman-underclassman situation). this is just me helping clarify something, not a disagreement or me trying to change your opinion. oikawa is also not my top fave, but i thought i'd help sort out that weird translation thing you seemed to experience there.

I'm not trying to say that Oikawa hitting kags would've been ok, because ofc it wouldn't be, i'm just seeing a pattern of people talking about that moment as if Oikawa was a fully grown adult about to hit a child instead of a child having a mental breakdown after feeling like everyone wants to replace him with someone else, someone perceived as better than him (even though objectively they're about at the same level when it comes to skill and technique) and like all of his hard work isn't good enough and almost hitting another child, there was a miscommunication that never got clarified and when both Oikawa and Kageyama are rather bad at communicating their feelings although in different ways, you'll end up with a grudge that might seem silly if you're not in it, and ofc kageyama was at no fault in this situation but he was the one everyone seemingly wanted to replace Oikawa with and so he became the target of all of Oikawa's jealousy, anger and hurt,, Also none of this would've happened if they had met at a time when they were both older and out of puberty (which really doesn't leave you with any mercies tbh) OR Kageyama had been the older one,, isn't that interesting to think about xD

though oikawa isn’t my favorite character, i have so much respect for him as a character and person. when you look deeply into his personality, he’s so relatable. the frustration and heartbreak that you feel when you realize hard work can’t compensate for talent all the time is so sad and it feels like you can’t do anything about it. i admire him so much because he’s always tried his best to work to become the best even though kageyama and ushiwaka were unequal from him the day they were born. coming out of that place is extremely mentally hard (i would say i’m still stuck there haha) and takes a while and a whole lotta willpower. also his immaturity is so funny LOL

hONESTLY HAIKYUU IS SOOOO WHOLESOMEEEEEE like it just. doesnt do so many of the commonly accepted shitty shonen tropes?? there's SO MANY great girls and none of them are grossly sexualised (kiyoko is the closest, but 90% of the time the focus is on her being beautiful and aloof rather than straightforwardly hot... i guess tanaka's sister is pretty sexy but she's an adult and it's in a fun rather than creepy way), the pervert characters are arguably noya and tanaka but again, it's softened a lot to being clownishly in love in a super over the top way that feels appropriate for a teenage character rather than being weird and horny...... the rivalries can get intense but they never cross the line into archenemy territory..... it's just so *chefs kiss* mwah

✨ MANGA SPOLIERS✨ (Tanaka & kiyoko) I can't bring up any specific evidence but certain scenes in the manga and anime show that tanaka seems more serious and devoted to kiyoko then noya is. Not saying noya isn't "in love" with kiyoko too but I don't think he would be upset to let his absolute bestest bro have her. There's also noya and asahis relationship. How noya wouldn't play unless asahi came back and how he was really really proud of asahi for staying strong against date tech. It's clear that they have a very strong bond. (Coupled by the fact that after highschool the two of them go on a trip around the world together 🤫) I actually think noya is really happy for his bro and they're both enjoying the lives they made for themselves after karasuno.

I'm not a huge fan of Oikawa either although, I understand why he feels the way he does. I understand the world of sports is competitive and Kageyama SEEMS to excel so easily. There's a chance Kageyama will surpass him one day and he hates having to accept that possibility. TBH i skipped most of what you said about Oikawa because i felt you dont really understand his character. Oikawa is nowhere near my favorite character, but you have to realize from the standpoint of an "average" player who has to practice their asses off to do everything, a child like Kageyama coming onto a team is heart wrenching. He is a great person who is loved by his whole team, and he is able to utilize the strengths and weaknesses of his team and supports them as such. Also, he gave Kageyama advice when he truly didnt need to, resulting in the falling set that Kageyama uses with Hinata. This isnt an attack on you or your assessment of him, i just recommend you look deeper than the surface level of his character where he portrays himself as cocky and flamboyant, when in reality he is constantly working to improve himself just like everyone else

People like him because he’s a well written character and is portrayed very realistically. I like him because I can relate to him with the whole aspect of not being good enough to be at the level of a genius (like Kageyama). Despite not being a genius like Kageyama, he works extremely hard, devote his time to volleyball, and never give up. I don’t understand how people don’t feel for him especially after Seijo lost. That man worked so hard to prove that an average person can stand at the stage of national, but he lost that ticket.

Oikawa has some great moments as well. I especially like his prideful character in a good way. His choice of words may look like he's a bad dude, but he actually is aspiring and his skills he cultivated is from his hard work. Also, he acknowledges his opponents in the end, and it may not look like it, he is the most cautious character in my opinion.
