The autofocus system sounds good but you would think that a new camera that expensive would be able to do 8k, unless the picture quality surprises like the C70 did then it’s definitely going to be a hard pass
@suchetdas53925 ай бұрын
The C70 was doing an approx 1:1 readout with slight oversampling. This is a 24MP sensor and stacked and I suppose at this price point a DGO sensor. So it's going to surpass the C70 in terms of image quality. The price could have been just a bit lower withing 7K dollars imo. But Canon are in the habit of releasing models at a higher price and giving discounts later.. Let's see.
@phrasalsyntax5 ай бұрын
It seems to be the R3 sensor repacked in a cinema package. I don't like when companies do that, still photography sensors are not ideal when you are trying to maximize image quality in motion picture. That's why the C70/300/500 are so much better in video than the mirrorless line. In order to satisfy the cohort of people who can't live with advance AF (mostly coming from the mirrorless world) this new 'cinema' cameras have to adapt and sacrifice image quality in video. Sony did that with the high-end Burano and put the A1 sensor on it. The result was that the image quality is clearly not on par with the Venice which has a dedicated video sensor. Still sensors have different architecture and requirements than motion picture sensors. However, the C400 seems interesting for run and gun, documentary, corporate, comercial work, but I don't think that the image quality will be on par with proper cinema cameras like the coming Blackmagic Cine 12K or the Komodo-X, even the excellent (in terms of IQ, not functionality) and cheap Blackmagic 6K FF (and coming Pyxis). Finally, Canon raw doesn't seem to be a very good implementation of raw, like R3D or Braw are, so this is another issue to take into account. In my opinion, Canon has focused too much recently on AF capabilities and hybrid type of cameras (still & video) and not enough on the quality of the codecs and the associated color science. Finally, the apparent lack of a EVF on this thing is confirming how big the influence of the mirrorless (millennial) community has been on the design of cinema cameras in this companies (Sony took away the EVF on the FX30 and FX3 cinema line, and Burano offers a fake EVF). EVF is a fundamental thing on any cinema/video camera and the lack of it is unfortunate in this case.

• Nothing new about mechanical ND.. it sounds like the same as any other Canon cinema camera including the C70. • No mention of DGO, so potentially a C70 with speed booster may give better results. • 6K ? Ok its an improvement on the C70, but its not going make me upgrade as 4K is fine and easier to manage. • The C70s AF has been drastically improved with firmware over the last couple of yeats, and whilst its not R3/5/6 level, its more than good enough for corporate / documentary work. Overall, its not very tempting. If it had IBIS and auto electronic ND with those other specs, they might have my attention. Otherwise my 2 C70s are safe.
@BobbyD2625 ай бұрын
I'm not sure the DGO actually does that much--the C70's 120p footage looks as good to me as the 60p (and the 120p doesn't use DGO). The triple base ISO might make more of a difference than DGO.
@juliancroot5 ай бұрын
@@BobbyD262I agree straight out of camera it doesn't look much different. It's in post production I find it very noticeable...I can stretch the image and it still looks pristine. The dark areas especially l look solid. I do concede though that a triple base ISO that includes 12800 will make it significantly cleaner in low light.

6K? Canon is already leading with an 8K option in the R5C, they need to follow through or exceed 8K resolution with whatever they do next. If the rumors about the next A7S being 6K are true then it sounds like this camera is trying to compete with the non-existing FX version of that in terms of low light performance. However, Sony could easily drop an 8K FX9 replacement for the same price as this C400 and absolutely embarrass it. As an all around video camera option, I’m sure this will do okay but with 6K video at this point and at that price when Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6Ks are selling for $1575, it’s feeling like this one’s been on the burner for a while, not so much taking a hammer to it but delaying things in the market instead of eating the R&D and making the 8K models that should be coming out by now.
@MrMoviePhoneEx5 ай бұрын
What are you talking about? The 6k BM FF doesn’t super sample, it’s has a great picture but but has ND and battery issues - plus you’ll get locked into a BRAW environment - the c400 really sounds like everything we’ve asked for in a c70 mk2 and the thing about the canon cinema line is that they just work - without a lot of extra gear. Great picture, amazing battery life and built in QOL features that make running them over BM cinema an easy choice in a lot of situations. Sure the BM FF has been on a recent sale, but these are way different cameras, a $7999 price point is Canon completing head on with BM and Sony. Plus, when are you delivering things in 8k, if they nail the 6k like they did for the 4k in the 70, not pin sharp clinical, but very usable and pleasing to work with… the c400 could be the compromise everyone has been waiting for - that doesn’t want to spend more than 10k in a professional system.
@Babsdoproductions5 ай бұрын
@@MrMoviePhoneEx Fair counter, I’m sure it will get some use in the field but come next NAB, if Blackmagic is showing off their new 12K and 17K cinema cameras and others are showing their new or revised Mark II or III 8K models and we’re still talking about 6K then we have a problem in the camera industry.
