I switched over to a Nikon Z8 In January. Also bought two lenses the S lens the 85mm 1.2 and the 24 -70mm 2.8. It's taken me about two months to fine tune the menus the way I like it and it just keeps getting better. This is one camera that has blown me away....in 6o yrs. I just can't put the Z8 and the 85mm 1.2 down. I was waiting on the R5ll. Now, no matter what the R5ll has I am completely satisfied with the Z8. The best Camera and Lenses I have ever owned and I have owned a lot and paid a lot more for less Canon, and Sony and that's not to say Canon and Sony is not good. They are. Of all the good cameras out there right now for me the Z8 is the best bang for the buck Good quality, Feature rich, and a great camera for all venues. And arguably the best glass you can get They make their own glass.

high MP is an absolute must for me, Im a wildlife photographer, Im using 2 x R5 with RF70-200 and RF600F/4, having 45MP is like having a built in 1.4x tele to the R3 for cropping. In wildlife we do crop quite a bit, not everything comes close to you. I can't tell you how important this is. Nikon seem to understand this, Canon don't seem to care for their flagship, they are definitely catering to sports photographers who need to transfer photos quickly. THIS is why I will most likely stay with the R5 series again, which I honestly consider to be the flagship.

I've been with Canon since 1968 and have some wonderful FD lenses. There are FD > RF adapters which I use on my R5 & R6. Of course it is fully manual, no autofocus or auto F-stop, but that's how I worked for years.

I’m a sports photographer, I shoot with an 1DX Mk II as my prime body and R5 as my secondary body. 20 megapixels on the 1DX is more than adequate, shooting thousands of images at an event I get it right in camera first for auto ftp. I don’t have the opportunity to go back, edit and crop. My images go straight to the web and are sent as small JPG. I don’t need a high megapixel camera as my prime body for sports. The R5 I use for portraits or as needs arise and again small JPG is sent for auto ftp from that camera.

Sometimes, it is not feasible to bring a second camera or even so, have to operate two camera side by side at the same time, let alone a need to pair each with lens that add to the burden. For example, I use my R3 with RF400f2.8, and use Leica SL90-280 APO / Hasselbald X2D at the same event. It’s tedious to switch gear…. Because I am not totally satisfied with what my R3 24MP is delivering. (I need bigger crop sometimes). Thus the reason why I really want a R3 equivalent or better R1 but with a higher MP.

@@Nicky411 because thats not its purpose. Y’all seriously need to understand this before complaining. While it is a flagship model, its main target audience is sports and news photographers. you can clearly see that on the canon announcement. High MP is actually an obstacle in the fast paced work environment of professional photographers in that field. They need to shoot edit and upload within mins so that their agencies can provide live coverage. High MP will just slow the whole process down. I worked as a press photographer and sometimes we dont even submit our RAWs for live coverages or breaking news.

Why do we need another low resolution flagship style camera? They should have made this R1 an R3II and developed an R1 that can actually hold up to the same use case as the competition. I’m a wildlife photographer that wants an R3 or R1 style body with more resolution because wildlife is often distant in my ecosystem. They don’t have anything that competes with the Z9 and the R5II without a built-in vertical grip doesn’t fill that niche for wildlife shooters because even with the grip the R5 doesn’t power the second focus motor on the RF 600mm F4.

I'm a part time surf and beach lifestyle photographer, starting out with a Canon 80d in 2019 (including taking it in the ocean with a water housing). I'd never picked up a camera, so I was very budget conscious in the start, but invested in an EF 100-400. When it came to upgrade to something more capable, I did a lot of research (and spoke to a lot of other surf photographers with R5, and the over heating was an issue in a water housings). I initially I liked the idea of having a big file for cropping, but eventually decided on the r6 mark ii. The rationale was for a number of reasons. 1) I'd rather see the framing during the shot (so rather than cropping I could get an extender). 2) I'd save money that can be used for some better glass (or a housing upgrade). 3) It was for paid work, which will fund the R5 eventually and keep the R6 as a back up. 4) smaller files sizes to store and process. After almost 1 year with the R6ii and 24-105f4 and 501.8 I've been very happy, I have been amazed that you can crop more heavily than the 80d (24mp apc) due to the full frame and modern sensor. Around the same time a customer asked for a print 60" x 40" of my old 80d files and was surprised how well it printed which was one of the main cons for the R6ii vs R5 - so that is well covered. I don't really feel the need for 45 MP for what I do, if it gets more serious and I'd need a back up camera the R5ii would be the logical choice. I hope that helps someone making a similar decision.

24 MP was all we had for years, looking back at some of my old images they can be really good providing I was able to fill the frame. But shooting small birds requires heavy cropping that is where 600mm and 50 MP really helps. It will be interesting to compare the detail available at high iso (25600) from R1 24MP and A1 50MP.

I hope they make the R3mk2 a high megapixel camera for actual wildlife photographers. The R1 at 24 MP is not it for wildlife. I don’t care how clean the images are. I’ve never struggled cleaning up images from my R5 with the multitudes of great software out there. Simon and this other “wildlife” (elephant) photographer don’t know what it takes to shoot small and timid subjects. Subjects you simply can’t get close to because they are either dangerous or because you don’t want to get closer to change the animals behavior. And I use a RF 600 F4.

24MP is a camera for Instagram, Facebook, and Squarespace. My iPhone offers better resolution. And it weighs less. (The professional bird photography community almost universally avoids the R3 because of its low resolution. Will this send them to Sony or Nikon for their professional body bird camera bodies? The R5ii is going to HAVE to compete with the Z9 and a1ii. Can it carry that load?) P.S. . . . With all due respect, Joshua's images are clearly low-res images. Most clients and galleries won't accept that look anymore. People want to see feather detail, iris detail, zits and skin tension. They absolutely demand catchlights in the eyes of birds. In the not too distant future when almost all sensors will have well above 24 MP, all the people now saying that 24 MP is more than enough for me will be singing a different tune just like when people were saying 12 or 16 MP was more than enough. They will then be saying that 40 or 45 MP is all I need and not the 80 or more of the higher resolution models. Yup, time and technology marches on.🧐

I am of the school of thought that more MP the better. Back in the day, less was better because of the way the sensor dealt with lowlight conditions. These modern sensors really don’t have those same problems. Moreover, we live in an internet age and one of the thing I see the most is how we consume that medium. Pinch to zoom in on photos / areas within that photo you are interested in. This is the way, and the reality for modern photographs. You want to be able to re-crop and focus on where you want the shot to be and having greater MP allows that in a way that lesser MP sensors do not. The problem I have with readout speed is - is it significant enough to effect an R5 II user over an R1 user? “The juice is not worth the squeeze” I believe. The R5 mark II will far outsell the R1 for this reason.
@JohnSwen-p6b
@JohnSwen-p6b 4 ай бұрын
5-series cameras have always outsold 1-series cameras. The 1-series camera is more specialized. Heavy cropping is not the way all photographers take photos. Many professional photographers get it right in camera and crop only minor for aspect ratio and printing. Also when you crop-in heavily pixel-based noise which is more prevalent on higher MP sensors becomes more noticeable. There is no free lunch.

I did comparisons of the R6 and R5 by upscaling R6 images to 45 MP using Adobe Camera Raw and layered the files on top of each other (portraits and landscapes using the best RF L lenses). My buddy and I have 30 years of photo/graphic design experience and we were only 50% on guessing which was which.. ie, we couldn't, it was just random. When I upscaled using the ACR/LR superscale feature then output the R6 files to 45 MP, and did the above. 90% of the time we picked the R6 files as sharper and more detailed (zoomed in to 100% on 5k monitors). So, at this point, I am confident in saying the MP is overrated and mostly for marketing. The 35mm full frame sensors are pretty much saturated. I can't see any instance where 45 MP would be better than 20-24 MP since I can upscale easily and get the same/better results. And even then, I've had 8 MP photos from the 1DIIN on huge billboards and they looked amazing! The same also applies to "cropping" (though I don't do that usually). I got the R6 II instead of the R5 and got much better autofocusing, no record limits, and saved $2000 and bought a 70-200 lens. Also, the files are way more manageable.
@CaliforniaPhantom
@CaliforniaPhantom 4 ай бұрын
@@77dris without realizing you supported my own statement. You used software to upscale your 24mp R6 mark ii (I have one btw and it’s fantastic) and you upscale it to 45mp to match the R5 onboard 45mp. If we played this game of using software to pack more MP inside native images then the R5 would end up on top as it is 45mp native. You almost doubled the 24MP to match 45mp on R5. If you almost double the 45mp native R5 pics, they will defeat the 45MP upscaled R6 mark II pics. And let’s say you can upscale both up to 200% more, well then the finished results would be the R5 being on top. If megapixels didn’t matter then Hasselblad would not have 100-400MP cameras. It’s the biggest tired argument in photography. Can you get by with less - absolutely. BUT MORE IS BETTER.

At least with the Sony A1, it was clear that was supposed to be a halo product (with a halo price) that could do it all. The A9 series still had a reason to exist. At 24mp and all these insane speeds, does this not just make the R3 product line the budget option, or even obsolete altogether? I don’t understand Canon’s strategy, here. As a nature photographer, I own 1 series cameras since the 1 D mark II. I used to buy a new one every second generation, as they are robust weather and relatively dust proof , fast cameras. Upgrading for Megapixels was never a topic. Currently I own the R3, which I use in combination with the 500 mm F4 EF Type II and the 100-500 RF lens. As long as I'm shooting wildlife and not birds, these combinations work great. In the past I sometimes used cameras with more megapixels, usually to end up disappointed with noise levels. But for bird photography it is an option. With respect to wether I will buy the new R1, I clearly want to see some reviews of the Autofocus system In case there is a further improvement of that system, this could convince me to spend the euros, even though that it will be more expensive in Europe. It is also dependent on the RF lenses, which will be coming. A 200-500 F4 RF lens and the new flexible converter could get a higher priority. Maybe even a R5 Mark II will become an option, but again dependent on the reviews.

More importantly, I do large prints, even extremely large (think 30ft long photo wallpapers in public spaces). The 24 megapixels simply doesn't cut it for me. So that's why I won't be looking to buy the R1, it just doesn't fit my needs at all. My occasional sports / action photography is more than served with the R5. Speaking of which, the news that R5 mkII will be 45 megapixel is also underwhelming for me so I'll probably bite the bullet and buy the whole Fuji medium format system. Just can't wait for high resolution Canon anymore. I will buy the R5 mkII, because I need a second workhorse camera, and the R5 has excelled in this role, but most of my budget this year is probably going to end up with Fuji.

As a full time working pro shooting events and weddings the R3 mp is suffice for 99% of my work. We shoot around 2-3 sometimes 4 weddings/events per week not counting studio portraits work. The only 1% I would need is when the clients require a large photo print for group photos in my line of work at least. But the older 5DSR can do the job. For weddings and events we would hardly need to crop past 25% and if the shots that requires more than 50%, they’re not gonna be made into posters anyways. Usually they end up on web sites or in printed albums no bigger than A3. For studio work, people rarely even go for prints as large as 20x30” anymore, people don’t have that sort of space to hang pictures. So the “low” 20mp count is more than enough. Cos if you are doing this everyday most likely you are good enough at your job you rarely need to crop or make huge adjustment to your images. The most important thing would be quick file saves and processing and you’re on to the next project cos what time you can save is what time you earn. This is coming from a photographer who has to do video too and has 3 full time working staff for the time being. The main attraction of the R3 is the handling, the toughness, battery life, and its ability to shoot high quality videos too. It’s more hybrid than the R5c thanks to having IBIS imho. Not everyone shoots Netflix most of us just do regular work that requires a workhorse.

You're right for sure, but wouldn't the R1 be a much better camera, covering all the options, if it had a 33-45mp sensor? Especially for the money, if that leaked pricing is right.

Didn’t know the R1 was going to have eye controlled af. Very interesting, I just don’t see myself using it though. I have astigmatism. I really thought Canon was going with the R3 being their high speed camera and R1 was going to be the Master of All. Oh well. R5 Mark II it is. I handle a range of professional photo and video. Having a camera that can do low res, high speed and then shift to high detail, low speed would’ve been awesome

I don't think the lens is photoshopped. 1st, the photographers left hand is also blurred/out of focus compared to the right hand. 2nd, if this is a leaked image, why hide the lens and leak the camera? Wouldn't you leak both? And if they were hiding the lens, why wouldn't they just black out the lens info? I don't think I've ever seen cannon photoshop in fake product info before.

Hmmmm - could be a solution buried in there somewhere - but IM a FANBOY !! Wishful thinking maybe

Canon has shown us that they can make excellent mirrorless cameras and this will be no exception. This series was never meant to be the high mp monster. Wildlife can always use more megapixels for cropping purposes. 45/50 megapixels beats 24 megapixels for wildlife. I don't even think that's debatable. I'm wanting to stay with Canon, but Canon keeps making me re-think that decision. I'll keep hanging on to see what the R5 mk II offers. If the dynamic range isn't improved, I'm dropping Canon and begrudgingly going to Sony for the A1 mk II that will likely appear in 2025. Come on Canon...some of us have been waiting (years) for you to match Sony's A1 with megapixels/speed/dynamic range.

Yeah the discussion about the MP count is as old as digital photography. And I do understand that in some situations a higher number is beneficial, but for me personally that has very rare been the case. I remember the days when I was shooting with the 7d with its 18MP and in that time I thought that was incredible much. My mirrorless journey started with the RP (26MP) from which I stepped up to the R6 and later added a Nikon ZFc (both 20MP). From these three cameras the R6 has the best image quality overall which surprised me as I compared it to the RP side by side (same lens) and in that very moment I realized that the sensor and the processing power is also very or even more important than MP. Printing my pics in A2 by myself or even bigger in a shop has never been a problem with my photos. And in the rare cases I wanted to crop heavily, it was 99% my fault in choosing the wrong lens or being too lazy to get closer 😉

I have an r7 and currently that is way enough mp for me, cropping in is possible even on the 7d mark ii, which is 18mp... for me 24 is the standard for a reason, its nice having more crop ability, but personally some of the images coming out of 24mp cameras are amazing. Don't get me wrong we all want more reach or being able to crop more, which is partially why I got the r7, but its doesn't help if you get it wrong haha. Its great but honestly its not needed for everything, there are definitely cases where I wish I had more. But for the price I paid for the r7, with adapater and sd cards (£1109) I cannot complain.

Been shooting with the R3 bodies since they first shipped. Love the R3 bodies, even though wish they were closer to 30MP. Happy not to have the overhead of the 45MP images from the R5 anymore! I mainly shoot weddings (photo and video), events, and fashion runway. I do 80% photo and 20% video. Never needed to shoot higher than 4k resolution for video, so I'm OK with My R3 bodies not having 8k. However, a full-size HDMI would be welcome, because the micro-HDMI jack is a sad joke. If the tiny Fuji bodies can handle a full-size HDMI jack, Canon has no excuse. They eye focus feature of the R3 never worked for me, so I don't care if they try to implement it in the R1. I want smarter autofocus, pre-record, and higher flash sync speed. This may be an unpopular opinion, but I like the mechanical shutter and would like to keep it. Yes, I often use the 1/64000 second electronic shutter when shooting at f/1.2 in direct sunlight, but for most everything else, I still prefer a mechanical shutter. The flip-out screen is one thing I wish Canon would update. Sony got it right mechanically, even if their screen doesn't look as good.

I may have been put off with the EOS-R 30MP I was not impressed with the image quality , but when I got the R5 and zoomed is (yes pixel peeking ) I was a lot more happy. but like you say and some others my old 50D I was happy with until you see what you can have LOL. I try and fill the frame and get the picture I want without editing as I dont have photo shop. but taking a photo of the moon with the 100-500 with and without the x2 I found I got a better picture without and Very heavy crop lol I got a good image I was happy with. now i am 100% sure if it was taken on a 24MP camera not a chance could I have Cropped as much. Sometimes when I'm out taking Macro ( my love ) I find that the DOF was to small and I need the shutter speed and im hand holding that I step back a little to give me that DOF knowing I can crop later. other times I just crank up the ISO 6400 easy or more to keep the shutter speed happy LOL the F stop at F8 to give me the best picture quality / shutter speed / DOF At F2.8 its far to small a DOF lol but sometimes that's cool subject dependant. But the normal photos yes you could say 24 MP may be good enough but once you have had 45MP there is no going back in my POV anyway

Good job with the info Simon. While not the "A9 III killer' some people hoped for this R1 is a very good camera, indeed. Any word on the dynamic range? (which is different than SNR). Also, is this sensor a dual-gain type? Nevertheless, those rolling shutter figures are quite excellent. Sensor read-out speed should also help with the AF as well as the FPS rate for stills. Seems to me that manufacturers are now making cameras targeted towards niche audiences. Perhaps, for the moment we'll see fewer generalist devices at least for now. (Sony takes the cake in this, creating these niche cameras with the hopes of Balkanizing the buying public.) I think Canon aficionados should be pleased.

Well, following the EOS1Ds/DX series that seems to be the requirement what market research Canon has told. I am confident that Canon knows its market and customers (at least they know me, since I am customer for the Ds/DX series and lately R3). Why am I still relying on these 2X MPx bodies? Because they are built like tanks, are working under the worst conditions and their battery life is great. So I guess the R1 will be in the right place, right? Well, I am not a news photographer, and I found out that my personal sweet spot would be somewhere between 30 and 40 MPx, very much like the EOS R, because I find it quite convenient to have some contingency for cropping…so: where is a body built like a tank, weather sealed and with decent batteries like the R3 with some 30+ MPx? What some people don't get is, if 24 mpix isn't enough, that's fine, other cameras can do more, sports oriented cameras never had high mpix count, sports shooters prefer smaller files for on the fly quick transfer times. And yes, those new features will soon trickle down the lineup as they did with other mirrorless. Look at the R50, R10, R7, R8 R6 Mark II, they all have a very close AF to the R3 with very close capabilities in terms accuracy anf whatnot... So yeah, just stop crying like toddlers, if you feel this one isn't right for you, just don't buy it, it's that easy...

Fast accurate autofocus and high ISO capability plus minimal rolling shutter is what is important to me. I will be buying the R1 over the R5 MkII. I also have the R6 MkII which I use in a waterhousing and like it almost as much as the R3. I do shoot a lot of video as well as stills. I can get exceptional prints up to 60x40 inches from 24MP but the vast majority of my work is on the web and some in magazines so 24MP is more than enough. So many people are complaining about the low MP and its actually getting annoying because its quite clear that y'all don't understand the purpose of the camera. So let me clarify for all of y'all. Yes this is marketed as a flagship model, but canon has also made it quite clear that this is meant as a professional camera for WORKING photographers in the industry. More specifically those working in the sports and news industry. Most of the camera's tech is geared towards this, such as the AF tracking etc. Canon even specifically highlighted that it will greatly benefit sports and news photographers in their official announcement. So its quite clear that they are the primary target audience. It doesn't mean that other professionals like wildlife photographers won't benefit as much, but seeing as they are not the main target audience, its specs aren't catered to them as much. It will still be able to do a good job, just not a mindblowingly good one. The sports and news photography industry is a very very fast paced environment. Shooting, wirelessly send photos to the media desk, editing, exporting and sending images to the editor sometimes has to happen within 30mins. High MP becomes more of an obstacle here because it just slows the whole process down. Imagine doing that whole process with thousands of images that are huge in file size, and sometimes even at locations where wireless connection is slow. Some of y'all may say that compression software exists for a reason. Compression software is indiscriminate, and its much better to shoot at the camera's native resolution to balance good quality and efficiency. People complain about Instagram's compression all the time. What if you use in camera compression to reduce the file size? The camera is already doing so much and you want it to do more???? I'll give y'all an analogy, why do people not shoot auto? because we still want to remain in control of the photographic process.... same concept here, we don't want an indiscriminate software deciding whats best for the photo. We want to be in control. Canon is also releasing the R5mkII soon.... It makes absolutely no sense that they will release an all-powerful camera that will eclipse and out-perform a future model in the professional line. Makes more sense to improve on an older model like the R3 than to overshadow the performance of a future camera. Its not a good business model and is much better to have individual cameras that each do their job and do it well. I mean shouldn't this be common sense? Cmon, we apply the same logic with lenses. To all the enthusiasts, this is a professional camera made primarily for people to earn their living and is hence based off their needs. Your needs as an enthusiast come secondary. So seriously, just get it through your heads and try to actually understand what the product is for instead of mindlessly complaining about what y'all want it to be.

@@Mr.Deeds. Did i say that it was only targeted at sports photographers? No I did not. Don’t put words into my mouths. I said that sports and news photographers are the PRIMARY target audience. You seem to understand english so how bout I educate you in marketing instead. Target audience does not mean only audience. Every product in the world has a primary target and secondary audience, with the main difference being that it is able to greatly meet the needs of the primary and adequetely satisfy the needs of the secondary. I am sure the R1 is capable of safisfying the basic needs of the photographers of other genres, however the R1 focused to meet all the demands of professional news and sports photographers. Canon’s announcement did not say it was a “master of all” genres, but everyone seems to expect it to be. it said that it would provide an enhanced experience across most genres and specifically highlighted sports and news. Canon’s 1 flagship models have always been targeted towards sports and news, even from the days of the 1Dx. Everyone knows this. It was just such a reliable model that it was capable of meeting the needs of other photographers as well. If sports and news has been the focus of their flagship models, why would people now suddenly expect it to be any different???? I’ve done work in both press companies and sports and I can tell you that 24MP is more than enough for this area. As mentioned in my main comment having a higher MP becomes a hindrance in sports and news. So the Sony and Nikon models that you mentioned will just slow down even more. If you feel that the R1 isnt good, then don’t get the R1. I don’t care and canon doesn’t care. Also if you need to rely on technology that much to produce a good image, it calls into question your photography skills and maybe you should go back to basics. Or even better, pick up an analog camera. If not, stop unfairly criticising and complaining about thing you clearly know very little about
