@@SciManDan The biggest issue a lot of times is, especially when you're under pressure, you won't be thinking of the consequences of the timelines and how they intersect with each other. For instance, 5000 years ago, Egypt (~3100BCE) was a fairly new country. Western Rome collapses about 1600 years ago (~400CE).

On question 6, the stories may have become known in the 14th or 15th centuries, but they clearly talk about Richard the Lionheart and his brother John. Robin helps make sure Richard's ransom isn't stolen etc (Richard was captured and ransomed while returning from the Third Crusade). Richard died in 1199, John in 1216. As this is a history question rather than one based on the map, I'd argue you should be able to look this up. Also, as a football guy, you should know that the three lions were the symbol on Richard's shield. That's where that came from.

We spent Christmas 2002 at Edwinstowe YHA and cycled round the forest bridleways and we also used to sail at a club on a reservoir (Kings Mill) that was on the Maun (near Mansfield - ie Maunsfield) now sadly disbanded because the local council refused to renew the lease (30p Lee had some influence there!). So I know the area but I suspect I wouldn't have fared any better than Dan.

Ok, I'm going to leave the medieval period being 5,000 years ago alone; but, who is "officially" naming the origin era of Sherwood Forest as "prehistoric." Prehistoric is pretty broad considering it applies to all of time before humans developed writing. That is the real stich-up in the question. If we are talking about geologic time periods, then it would be from the current period, the Quaternary (which is part of the Cenezoic era). If we want to be a bit more specific, we could break it down to epochs which would be a more useful timescale since the 12,000 year dating matters. That would put the formation during the Pleistocene as opposed to the more recent Holocene or Anthropocene. Seriously though, "prehistory" is so broad as to be nearly meaningless as an "official" era.

This is very anti-Wakefieldist! Wakefield also claims Robin Hood. Since it's all made up, their claim is as strong as Nottinghamshire's. That's not to say it's entirely fictional, more a representative legend of the "masterless men", escapees from serfdom. The elevation of the main character in social origins is not remotely credible, but that's a ubiquitous feature of social reality being turned into mythology. The tales may date from the 15th century, but they are more likely to refer to the years of the 14th and 13th centuries, before the Black Death and the subsequent Great Rising of 1381. Ah, yes, the answers put me right. The yarns refer to the reign of King John, don't they? No, Dan, the Medieval period is reckoned to have begun about 1,500 years ago, varying from place to place in Europe. Its ending is much more diverse, with a variance of about 3-400 years, depending on economic factors. England, Scotland and France being first into the Early Modern period in the 16th century, but Russia not until the 19th. 5,000 years ago is either the late Neolithic or very early Bronze age. I go for the former. It's before the Beaker Culture emerged, but when the first phases of Stonehenge were built. Medieval people, on the other hand, developed the first firearms! Now I hear the answers "prehistoric" is a duff one. That's not a period at all, just a "don't know" generalisation.
