I never understood the mindset of schools being afraid of hiring defensive coordinators. The best coach maybe in college football history and without question the best coach right now is Nick Saban, former defensive coordinator. Arguably the best coach in NFL history and arguably the best coach in the NFL today is Bill Belichick, former defensive coordinator. How do you look at the success of those two and think that it's riskier to hire defensive coordinators as opposed offensive coordinators? No, both those guys are in a different league but the fact that they've reached the pinnacle of their profession should tell you DCs aren't any riskier than hiring an OC.

He was the only best choice that was out there in the search! Hopefully they didn't paid a lot of money cause it's a gamble! Hopefully it works out for Oregon ducks! Mario Cristobal, is a great recruiter, but a mediocre of a coach.
@jimedick9496
@jimedick9496 2 жыл бұрын
I loved Cristobal, and I love his Workman mentality. He worked his butt off and he brought in a ton of energy. He was relentless in recruiting. With that said, I was never impressed with his coaching. I didn’t see them develop the players like I have in the past. The offense was quite boring to be honest. I look at Justin Herbert and I see what he’s doing in the NFL. At Oregon, they never really let him go. The play calling was run run run, then throw a screen pass or out to the flat. I could sit and predict 80% of the plays to be called. Herbert senior season was somewhat of a waste. At first, I thought it was Marcus Aroyo’s fault and blamed him as the issue. Then he left and they hired Moorhead for their OC. Well the offense didn’t change. At that point, I realized Cristobal is calling the shots on offense. Again, I love Cristobal, and will be forever grateful that he pulled the program back together after slick Willie debacle. He put Oregon back on the map and he genuinely cared about his players and the program. I can’t blame him for wanting to go back home and coach his Alma Mater. I wish home luck.

I really hope Lanning works out, and I’m an SC fan. In a perfect world I want SC to dominate like they did in the 2000s but I also equally want the PAC-12 to be relevant in the world of CFB. In order for that to happen we need at least 6 teams to be national powerhouses. We need Oregon, Washington, Stanford, Utah, ASU, and SC to all be consistently competitive and nationally ranked. To me this is a similar situation to the B1G 8-10 years ago when that entire conference was garbage except for Ohio St. the B1G programs figured it out and now they’re the 2nd best conference in CFB. So hopefully as a conference we can follow that template and see a west coast resurgence. The alternative is a conference that ends up looking Iike the BIG12 where the 2 best programs are forced to consider other alliances and I think that would be really sad.

Ducks are a decent program but have completely underachieved. They should of run that conference if they’re as good as Josh says they are but they haven’t. I don’t see this new hire as a game changer at all. It’s just a push in my opinion.
@BruceRichwineJr
@BruceRichwineJr 2 жыл бұрын
@Sabin Brabb I wouldn’t call it overachieving in a conference that is pretty weak and you’re supposed to be the best the conference has for the last couple years. Cristobal should of been in the CFP every year winning the PAC 12, but he didn’t. Someone always got in the way such as Utah this year.
@tweeddingus2130
@tweeddingus2130 2 жыл бұрын
Oregon has the potential to be a great program. Their national brand has been built up and allowed them to be in the conversation to land top recruits from around the country. With the talent they had the last few years (thanks to Cristobal’s recruiting) they absolutely should have ran the table in the PAC12. However, they didn’t and it wasn’t because the program wasn’t good enough. It was 100% because they got out coached (thanks to Cristobal’s stubbornness and poor play calling). And before anyone says “bUt cRiStObAl DiDn’T CaLl tHe pLaYs”, he absolutely had a strong influence over the play calling strategy. Joe Moorehead is a brilliant offensive mind, and yet his offenses at Oregon looked eerily similar to the years prior under Arroyo. The common denominator? Cristobal wanted to build a program that was an old school run first offense. He wanted to win the games at the line of scrimmage and run people into the ground and refused to make necessary changes when that wasn’t working
@BruceRichwineJr
@BruceRichwineJr 2 жыл бұрын
@@tweeddingus2130 makes sense Constantine how the team performed the last couple years. Good but not great. Cristobal could be in the same boat as Scott Frost unfortunately. I want to see Miami become great again with all the Florida schools because that’s the only way we start to see parity and balance restored in college football. That benefits all conferences.
@tweeddingus2130
@tweeddingus2130 2 жыл бұрын
@@BruceRichwineJr Cristobal should be able to recruit just as well at Miami if not better. He’ll compete for the best in-state talent and build up Miami’s roster. It’ll all come down to whether or not he makes strides as a game manager and gives up some of his strangle hold over his offense. You can look at Oregon’s Alamo Bowl loss to Oklahoma and still see some upside for Oregon post-Cristobal. Under Cristobal, Oregon got down big to Utah in the first half (both games) and then came out in the second half running the same offense and losing big. Without Cristobal they still ended up down big at halftime to Oklahoma, but the second half was a thing of beauty. The Ducks clearly made some major adjustments at halftime and came out looking like a completely different team (something that NEVER happened under Cristobal). As long as Dan Lanning is able to make in-game adjustments Oregon should be able to make some crucial steps forward. Cristobal leaving Oregon for Miami could easily be a big win for both programs. Only time will tell

Could be a good hire, he is absolutely better than Justin Wilcox. But my biggest takeaway is the landscape is just opening up for Lincoln Riley and USC. He's going to dominate offensive talent out west and still cherry pick a couple national guys. Starting to see why he preferred that route over the SEC

@thatacdcfan 2 жыл бұрын
@@clarencewalder2985 You must be confusing us for some other team. No national championship but they did make an appearance. In 2021, Oregon gave Ohio State their first home loss since Oklahoma in 2017 and their first regular-season loss since Purdue in 2018. You know Texas A&M? The only team to beat Bama this year? Well, they only beat Colorado by a FG, the 5th-place team in our South division. I guess the SEC must be 2nd tier too, right? There is no Coach O, unless you're talking about Oderinde, who was a S&C coach that hasn't been with the team in years because he hospitalized several players in 2017 due to not knowing how to structure team workouts... In those same past 10 years, they only have ONE 10-win season, and it's not because they play Clemson 9 times a year lmao. The last time Miami won a title was before half of today's current players were even born. I'll give you the tradition, but that doesn't mean much when your team hasn't been relevant for 20 years. As for weather? I'll take dry heat and clouds over literal hurricanes every single time. Cristobal is a fantastic recruiter, but he micromanages his coordinators and can't call a decent game to save his life. Good luck; Miami's gonna need it.
