So it takes away the people’s ability to recall officials with signatures. Instead we have to depend on other officials to be honest instead of being loyal to their political parties. Doesn’t sound good to me.
@AustinSPTD1996Ай бұрын
Recalls could still be attempted if the measure passes. It would just not be as effective as an impeachment process if an official is credibly accused of misconduct yet refuses to leave office. Given how Oregon has seen two elected officials -- former Governor John Kitzhaber, and former Secretary Shemia Fagan -- both get involved in scandals in the last decade, the risk of an impeachment is a meaningful tool to ensure accountability in statewide office.
@hollyscott4614Ай бұрын
You are only seeing it at surface level. If you did your work by voting good, honest people into state legislature positions then allowing the rule of law to be followed through the impeachment process means more or less, that the "people's ability" was just used in a different channel. We the people still have a say in an impeachment process, it is just via legislative vs. grass roots. A more formal process like other states means quicker and likely more thorough impeachments for the right reasons. I am a democrat and I am voting YES on this measure.
@TrampMachineАй бұрын
I voted yes but I think it's funny so many Republicans support it. Republicans won't have a 2/3rds majority anytime soon in Oregon and this would certainly be used against Republican legislatures who try to stop laws from being passed by not showing up. Either way I think it's good to be able to remove someone without needing a recall or them to step down.

Impeachment is only analogous to an indictment, it draws up the charges. A trial is still needed to remove the impeached person from office, if they do not resign first. All persons in Oregon State government who are elected or appointed should be impeachable, not just a select few at the top. Additionally any state employee should be able to be fired for any of the same terms for which others are impeachable. The standard of %15 voters and 90 days is to high of a standard for recall. %10 and 120 days seems to be more reasonable. Both recall and impeachment could make our State Government more accountable to the people. We did see recently impeachment at the national level used as a political tool. This too could happen in Oregon and at some point probably would be. Rules for impeachment should include methods to prevent abuse.

We are seeing a strange time where officials don't care how bad they act and it doesn't make sense to wait. It needs to be a public process. If Oregon state is the only state without similar laws, then why not? Where has this been abused?

I voted yes to this; especially in combination with a yes on *Measure 117* (Ranked Choice voting). The reason is because ranked choice has been proven to help reduce polarized politics. This has many benefits, particularly in situations of impeachment where folks are worried about abuse.

@@Ampwich At least your vote was educated. Personally I think yes on Measure 117 is huge (ranked choice voting helps everyone, especially once we get used to it).
