I remember this play that caused a rule change in the NFL. The "Holy Roller" was a controversial play in a 1978 game between the Oakland Raiders and the San Diego Chargers that led to a rule change in the NFL: The play: In the final seconds of the game, Raiders quarterback Ken Stabler intentionally fumbled the ball forward. Two other Raiders, running back Pete Banaszak and tight end Dave Casper, then batted and kicked the ball into the end zone for a touchdown. The Raiders won the game 21-20. The new rule: If an offensive player fumbles on fourth down or on any down after the two-minute warning, only the fumbling player can recover and advance the ball for the offense.

Wanna know why Autzen is so loud? Take a look at the big stadiums in the conference, and notice how far the field is from the first row of stands. That's the biggest reason. I want to think the engineers in 1966 were mad geniuses, but I think they just got lucky.
@Infiltrate.and.Betray2 күн бұрын
"I think they just got lucky." -endcensorship874 If you think the distance between the field and the first row of seats is the product of luck, then you think wrong. For the 2002 renovation and expansion, engineers lowered the field by six feet in order to extend lower bowl seating by several rows and minimize the stadium's average seating proximity. This downward extension brought the bottom-most row, which was originally gapped quite a bit further from the field, significantly closer to both sidelines and both endlines. From a construction point of view, this phase alone was a massive and costly undertaking. Hard as it might be for you to believe, engineers do actually think about these kinds of things first before they start pushing dirt. At any rate, the real engineering secret to Autzen's loudness potential resides in its original earth-berming. Nothing contains sound like terra firma. Unfortunately, the 2002 design did come with a compromise in that much of the original southside earth berm had to be removed in order to set the foundations for the main skyline structure. The field-lowering somewhat compensates for this loss, as it sinks the playing surface deeper into the earth overall. The northside earth berm remains intact at present, but I'm guessing they'll have to take it out, too, when the next renovation comes along. Assuming a second field-lowering is very unlikely, a future renovation would need to find a different way to compensate for the loss of the northside berm. Steep seat raking and "enclosive" architecture will be the key to the acoustic design, and pressure will be on the engineers to get it right.

Here is why I disagree that the rule should be changed. We've gone decades without the "loophole" of rushing to snap the ball to avoid a review being closed. This shouldn't be removed. Ohio State didn't lose because of this loophole. They lost because they decided to start passing on the 28 yard line when they only needed a field goal to win.

What do you think this says about the lanning era compared to the previous game time management blunders we've had in the past?
@gregm44413 күн бұрын
I think the rule should NOT be changed. The down and distance + time left are all a factor of the game. Coaching on both sides is being limited by a rule change. People make the distinction that why not put 15 or more players out there? That would tip your hand to the offense, and they could just spike the ball. What ever time is lost is a part of the game. Those may say why not do it over and over? You wouldn't because it would cost you 5 yards at a minimum each time, plus it becomes unsportsmanlike, and there is a 15 yarder for that. Something you would never want to risk. People also say why not do it everytime on the goal line because it only becomes half the distance? The offense would like that...they would get another untimed down every time until they got in.
@kyletucker38113 күн бұрын
Not to mention the entire reason we were able to exploit the rule is they were stupid enough to start passing on the 28 yard line. Should have been three runs to the center of the field, timeout, then kick the field goal.

I'm not really on-board with this new "tactic" of the 12-man thing. To me it seems un-ethical. The Ducks needed to stop OSU from moving the ball from their 25 to the Duck 25 in 1:47 by playing great Defense. That said, there's the analogy of the 12-man tactic being equivalent to the intentional foul in Basketball. Uh, maybe. Oregon was ahead, in BB the tactic is used by the team losing trying to get more opportunities to score. That said, I've very happy Oregon won . There will be a re-match, that seems very likely at this point, should OSU beat Penn St. I'm figuring OSU will CRUSH Penn St when they play. The the two teams will get another crack at each other and that should be e;pic.

It's also exactly like a defender who is getting beat and rather than let the runner with the ball make a touchdown, (as he surely would have) he (OSU defender) willingly commits to taking a penalty. Happens in every game. Isn't that cheating to gain an advantage? By your logic why not let the TD happen (as it would have) and then answer with your offense? Or where is the ethics of your offensive coach calling a hurry up play instead of letting a review of the Jeff Bassa interception happen, at the beginning of the first quarter, so that his team (OSU) got the advantage and made a TD?
