English translation for those who need it! Might skip over little details as this takes a fair while to do and I wasn't expecting them to come out so quickly ^^' I've scattered timestamps here and there mainly around interjections and visuals that are easy to identify. KZbin gives me an error if I try to post the whole thing at once so I'll split it into two and put the second half in the replies 🙇‍♀ Band: Hi, we're Oreskaband! Hayami: It's our 20th anniversary event, looking back through our releases! Title card: Part 2 - Overseas edition Hayami: This is the second one [fanfare 0:10 ] Last time was from our formation to our debut Tae: "We Are Oreskaband" aka "WAO!!" Hayami: These ones [gestures 0:21 ]. These CDs lined up here are what we've been able to release! This time we'll be going from about 2007? iCas: [gestures 0:29 ] From here! Hayami: This one we released in America Tae: "Oreskaband" by Oreskaband Add: I see! Hayami and Tae: Yes! *Yes!* *YES!* Hayami: After graduating high school we started our first tour, visiting three cities in America and fourteen cities in Japan. iCas: We went to America pretty much straight after graduating. Hayami: The first show was SXSW right? Caption: SXSW (South by Southwest - big annual music and film event held in Austin, TX every March, as well as an expo for people in the industry. iCas: At the first show, Tomi's (bass) sound wasn't coming through. We were both excited and nervous to play in America so when that happened it was pretty funny. Tae: We'd start the live with Saki (trumpet) going "We are Oreskabaaaaaaand!" And Tomi's freaking out like this [mimes Tomi frantically adjusting knobs on her amp and bass] but Saki's not looking at her so it's just tiny Saki yelling at full force- Caption: Small Asian girl vs huge Americans 1:17 Tae: - and there's all these huge Americans cause it's Texas Hayami: Just her voice alone Tae: "The show's starting!" Tae, iCas and Hayami: "We are Oreskabaaaaaa- huh?" 1:25 Tae: So that was the first sound of Oreskaband's first tour! Add: Incredible! That's so Oreskaband! Hayami: I know right? Trying to act cool and failing! Tae: So everyone there was like rooting for us. Add: "You got this! You got this!!" iCas: And the moment the sound starts coming through the audience is like [applause]! It kinda got everyone on our side, the anticipation and relief. Add: That was a sneaky! iCas: It was a good show in the end, even with the issues. Add: It kinda hardens you mentally, right? Hayami: These "What a Wonderful World records" we made after our first Warped Tour in 2007. 2:05 "Music Driver" on the first one, we came up with on the bus looking out at the scenery in America. Add: It's got that sense of the place... iCas: Yeah, exactly Add: Huhhhh I kinda wanna try something like that... Tae: So it was when we were on the Warped Tour in 2007 right? iCas: Right. That time we only went around the west coast, the next year we were on the full tour. Caption: Vans Warped Tour - a big rock and extreme sports festival which toured cities in the US and Canada between June and August every year. Hayami: We made the first What a Wonderful World in between the two. Add: You were saying about writing that song on the bus? Tae: So we had around 8-10 hours travelling between cities so we were were just kinda sitting getting shaken around in the bus that whole time, and we'd look outside thinking "I wonder what the scenery looks like at the moment" and it was just trees, and we'd look again 2 hours later and it would be the sabe trees. iCas: Actually just [Singing the lyrics of Music Driver 3:00 ] "Olive trees going on forever..." Tae: We were saying to our tour manager Brian "It's still the same trees..." and he told us "Yes, yes, those are called olive trees" - these rows of kinda short trees. iCas: Really middle-of-nowhere... Tae: So that line "Boredom piled on boredom" line from the song was kinda expressing that sense of tension during those times on the bus. Hayami: That's styliiish... 3:23 [Sings the line with feeling] Add: Niiiiice... iCas: "I just wanna meet someone so bad~" That's a good line right? Hayami: Recently our old manager sent iCas this really nostalgic video. It was from our bus on the 2008 Warped Tour when we were listening to the recording of "Music Driver" we'd made in Japan. So we were just looking out at the same olive trees listening back to it. iCas: That bus had a music player on it that we would use to listen to music we liked so we were using that to listen back to the Music Driver recording. Hayami: We were also listening to Japanese bands; we'd kinda been thrown into all this stuff in America and that outside perspective made us more conscious of our identity as a Japanese band Add: I guess it's kind of a moment where your sense of self began to form. Before that it was just like like "Yeaaaah!" iCas: Yeah, "From Sakai to the World..." 4:31 Tae: And that "world", it doesn't just mean "overseas"... iCas: There are various meanings... Tae: Yeah, like "society" in general too... iCas: So there was that sense we got while we were in America, but we also got to play various sessions with American creators at that time, like recording engineers and producers.

Hayami: After the 2008 Warped Tour when we all went back to Japan, Tae and iCas went back to America together to work on songs. Add: Wild, that star treatment... 5:03 Hayami: Yeah, you worked with Brian [Mashburn] from Save Ferris... iCas: Yeah, yeah, yeah the song was "What a Wonderful World" 5:12 Hayami: That's on Volume 2, isn't it? iCas: Brian suddenly started singing the chorus on that one. We had the idea for the verse melody, but we weren't sure about the chorus, we'd been working on a chorus that matched the energy of the verse... but on the chorus Brian was like [mimics energetic drumming] Add: That's America! *The* America. 5:32 iCas: So that idea of the backup shouts on the chorus came up and it showed us like "Oh, Oreskaband gives off that kind of vibe, huh?" We got that more objective perspective on it. After that, the chorus of Going Away also... the producer on that track, Greg [Collins] also told us "Try singing all together" Hayami: We got that a lot, didn't we? iCas: They made us put shouts on a lot of those tracks- Hayami: "Made us" 6:01 iCas: "Girls, try all singing... try shouting", it came up a lot, there's a lot of that on there... Hayami: Up to that point we were never really sure if what we were doing was good iCas: This era, we didn't really know what we were doing 6:14 We didn't really have an impression of what Oreskaband meant to our audiences Tae: So that time where we were moving from Sakai out into the world, on the Warped Tour... iCas: Working with overseas artists... Tae: Being seen by different audiences, we started to think more about how to make an audience happy Add: That step towards properly being an artist iCas: These two releases really became our foundation. 24 Carat also happened during those sessions, Greg suddenly tried putting the synthesiser on it [imitates synth line from 24 Carat 6:46 ] Tae: We were a little bit sensitive about that sort of thing. We were like [scoffing slightly] "Well, we're a band, so there shouldn't be sounds where you can't figure out who's playing." Add: I get that! I totally get that! 6:56 Tae: We were really stubborn about it. iCas: "Just the sound of the six of us is enough!" Tae: Greg was understanding about it, so he was like "Well, maybe just this much is okay?" [Pouting, mimicking the band at the time] "Hmmmmm, maybe it's not too bad." Add: You were easy to read!! 7:15 iCas: If it was adding an acoustic guitar or something at the end we'd be like "Put it on, put it on! That sounds really cool!" Tae: He opened a lot of doors for us with stuff like that. iCas: Then there's "Bouquet" which was written by an overseas lyricist. Tae: Not a lyricist... Hayami: Right, a woman who played in a band. Add: So those English lyrics aren't Tae's? Hayami: Right. Tae: I was kind of struggling at the time - the label people were saying "Since you write the lyrics..." I kept being told that maybe it would be better to write in English. But in English I don't really have that repertoire of words to draw from, so I'd be constantly checking the dictionary and I wouldn't know where lines should end. So I'd just be sitting there all night in a family restaurant listening to the demo trying to write and crying. But I just couldn't make it work so I had the idea to ask in America where we were at the time... iCas: That female artist. It was Greg who introduced us to Stella [Maxwell]. Add: So it wasn't someone you knew directly. Tae: Right, it was more like Greg thought our ways of thinking might work together. iCas: Because of that, I think it's really got some personality in those lyrics, like the word choices like "Thunderbird". Tae: People said that using words with a retro vibe like that was very like my way of writing. Hayami: Because we only got the lyrics from Stella, it was kind of interesting to see how she'd interpreted the melody. Add: It's like... romantic. 8:54 iCas: Those collaborations really broadened our horizons. Hayami: "Super Duper" was also from that time. We didn't play it on Warped Tour, did we? iCas: Right, it wasn't on the setlist but I think in soundchecks, like I'd play that F chord... [Tae hums the bassline 9:18 ] Hayami: Right and Tomi would kind of join in. iCas: We didn't have rehearsals on Warped Tour so we had to figure out the sound by playing various bits and pieces in soundchecks, and so the intro to that song kind of came together like that, it got a good reaction in our soundcheck practices... Hayami: So we kind of came up with it while looking at how the audience reacted? iCas: Right. Hayami: That's great... Caption: Doesn't remember lol 9:43 iCas: We came up with the intro and interlude in America and then fleshed it out when we got back to Japan. Tae: Like the horns and stuff Hayami: Saki came up with the horn parts, and when we were in a hotel in Tokyo she was like this [headbanging 9:58 ] on the bed while writing it. iCas: Right, she really got into it. Hayami: I think she might have been visualising performing it live while she wrote. Add: Visualising the experience. iCas: A lot of people around us were saying "Super Duper!" 10:15 as in "Your show was Super Duper!" Add: Right, so it's like a positive thing like "That was great!" Hayami: Like "More super!" iCas: "Really super!" So it made a great title for the song. Tae: There's a real sense of the temperature, like of the concerts... Hayami: In Japan trying to embody us as the band that had gone on the Warped Tour... It was always Super Duper that represented that. People had all these conceptions of us before seeing our shows - "High school girls", "Japanese" - iCas: Us being women, as well Hayami: Right, it was kind of difficult just to be taken at face value. So the lyrics relate to that. iCas: Right, like it's something we were fighting against. Tae: "24 Carat" is like that too. All this pressure from around us that we didn't really want to meet. iCas: There was always this sense of Oreskaband forging our own path. Add: 11:21 That's great, that's what it means to be young, right? iCas: It really is. The cover photo also has that vibe, like we want you to take another look. Hayami: Ume-chan took the cover photo, right? We all needed a bath in that one [Volume 1 cover 11:36 iCas: Cause it was the middle of the tour. Like "Wait, we're taking the photo now?" Maybe it was before a show or something, I don't know exactly. "Everyone line up!" "Eh? Here?" And that photo became the cover. Caption and Tae: [Seeing the cover] Ohhhhhhhh... [Sweating profusely] Add: It's about time to wrap it up. Hayami: So that was the America episode, when we were about 20. Next time we'll be talking about shows and recording we did back in Japan, and look back at our next full-length album "Color". Thanks for watching, everyone, look forward to next time! Bye-bye!
