I'm jealous. Here in northeast Texas we plant potatoes mid February. My hubby and I were both really sick with the flu for weeks and missed the planting window for potatoes. No home grown potatoes for us this year. Didn't get to plant til mid March. We're already in the low 90s F (mid 30s C) here for the last week. But I've got corn about knee high and already harvesting tomatoes, onions, zucks, etc. Leaf mold and worm castings are the bomb. Good luck to you on getting the world record.

Purposely left them late this year, most the spuds just popping through the ground now. We are a little behind this year due to the long winter we had

Good luck with the giant challenge mate 👍🏻. Was wondering if it would help with watering if you put a length of 3” down pipe in the bucket with holes drilled in the sides? Plus less risk of damaging the foilage Maybe even put a dripper pipe inside the down pipe and connect to auto water system 🤔
@simplifygardening6 жыл бұрын
will be running some sort of system over them mate, but got time yet

Awesome stuff and you do well to get those containers as most of the landscapers around here keep hold of them. That leaf mold you have there is beautiful stuff. I'm not sure what you need to pull up a giant potato but for a giant turnip I hear that you will need a mouse, cat, dog and old lady as a bare minimum....
@simplifygardening6 жыл бұрын
A firefighter and a couple of little tearaways Richard. Lets hope its big enough to prevent us pulling it alone lol
@simplifygardening6 жыл бұрын
Hey, Richard. When are you starting that garden of yours? Maybe a collab video? :)
@pondguru6 жыл бұрын
That sounds good to me as we should be getting the main lawn art of the garden finished in the next month or so then it is on to the vegetable garden. If I can get the structure in this year ready for planting next year I'll be more than happy. Not sure how a collab will work as you're miles from me (Wales?) but I'm open to any ideas you have. The garden will be a series of raised beds made from sleepers so should be quite easy to make. May even have a greenhouse if there is space too. I'm away for a few days but feel free to give me a ring on 07772848730 from Monday onwards no worries.
@simplifygardening6 жыл бұрын
Yes, Richard, It is a long way away, but maybe I can find the time to make the trip to you, what if I come up and we have a chat about the structure and reasons behind the hardscape of a vegetable garden. support frames, tunnels/greenhouses raised beds location whatever. Id also love to see that pond of yours. Then we could film that as a video Il show your pond and stuff on my channel and you film the structure video or something for yours. Just a suggestion. I will give you a call next week. Tony

I just had an idea when watching this. We should do a competition for each variety, Biggest Sarpo, Biggest Rooster, Biggest King Edward etc I am convinced with some cultivation that one day some one will break the record with a Sarpo. Red Pontiacs and Dakota Reds get pretty big as well. I want to cross a Red Pontiac with a Red Sarpo and see what happens. Anyways Tony Best of Luck with them two halfs, Chris :)

Could i have some advise please? First time grower hopefully, ive just had some seeds delivered by royal mail but the bag has split in delivery and they have put them in another bag, the weather has been bad here in England since i ordered and i think rainwater has got it and some of them feel really squishy and damp do you think they will be ok to plant or will just rot? Or is there anyway can increase my chance of them being sucessful? Btw love your videos I learnt loads! Thanks 😊
@simplifygardening3 жыл бұрын
if when you squeeze them and they release fluid with bubbles they were damaged by frost and will rot, if no fluid then will be fine to plant

@simplifygardening5 жыл бұрын
Neil to start id buy seed from the merchants, store bought are sprayed with a shoot fluid to stop them from shooting, however this doesnt always work and many have grown from the store bought

Oakland’s is where I’ve bought all my tubs from, also bought a good few hundred pots from them too. The spuds in my tubs are growing quicker than neighbouring plot holders, I wonder if it has anything to do with the heat generated from them as they’re black?

I am not into big potatoes, but we are eating the Charlottes I planted in the greenhouse. Just as an experiment, I have replanted two surface green ones that have small chits, in tubs. I actually grew the spuds from supermarket bought Pembrokeshire potatoes. Yes I know you should buy certified seed, but I recall the farmer who bought Scottish seed and was reunited with his lost pocket knife in one of the sacks. I am using pure chicken and pine shaving compost as a growing medium with a sprinkle of 14N 14P 21K fertiliser.
@simplifygardening6 жыл бұрын
Whats the name of the fertiliser you are using Wendy, please?
@wendyrowland77876 жыл бұрын
The fertiliser is specifically for agriculturally grown potatoes. We bought it in 600K bags to spread on deficient pasture and I kept a couple of sealed buckets back for the garden. I guess an allotment assn. could share out that kind of quantity, but it must be kept tinder dry in storage. You also have to be an account customer with the agricultural merchants for anything that contains nitrogen. Oh and you need to be able to transport a bag from their depot and be able to handle big bags, so I guess the idea isn’t viable.

I would love to see the makeup of this product through to compare with what you can buy publically. I don't suppose you have the details or a website where you bought it, do you?

Add wormcastings to that compost and you will get natural nitrogen back in the compost along with nature's nature enzymes and microorganisms. Works really well on Annuals & Peranials when planting.

Has anyone grown potatoes hydroponically? It would be much easier to grow a world record size if you could see what it was doing.
@simplifygardening5 жыл бұрын
Yes a friend of mine tried to grow a giant hydroponically it didnt do so well
@BarryCrawley5 жыл бұрын
Have you had any success growing potatoes from real potato seeds as opposed to growing from seed potatoes. The right genetics would produce a giant and the randomness of genetics from seeds might just get you that illusive record for the biggest spud.
@simplifygardening5 жыл бұрын
No Barry that is not something I have tried, but you planted a seed yourself now lol :)
