Great information thankyou. I would have liked more emphasis on the guiding principles though, we seldom use copper and require approval to do so, and it can cause issues with leaf analysis thresholds as well for certifiers etc; alot of people seem to turn to spraying before fortifying their trees against disease by way of increasing soil health and nutrient availability etc .

Ana I so agree! In my orchard spraying is a last resort! First priority is keeping our trees healthy in other ways...good nutrition, correct pruning, sanitation, scouting and trapping when necessary etc. Thanks for the feedback!

QUESTION?? Our apple tree has had pest damage, from stem to stern. It's been sprayed twice and fertilized before blossoming. The tree is 20ft tall loads of sweet big apples this year, but we are still finding damage but severely less. Do you have a clue what the pest is and any suggestions? Thanks for all the vast knowledge you have shared here.

Thanks for the nice feedback! I’d need to see photos. If damage is on the trunk and branches could be apple borers! Sorry I didn’t see your comment until now!

Hi I am in Ottawa and didn’t realize we have to spray when apples are dormant. Apple scab has developed on my Macintosh and golden delicious Apple trees. I found Safers sulphur dust. It says it can be used upto one day before harvest. Can I use it on the leaves while my tree still has fruit or wait till next autumn to use dormant spray. It’s my first year with these Apple trees as I planted them last year in fall. Please advise.
@Orchardpeople3 ай бұрын
Use your spray as per the instructions. It won't fix the infected fruit but will prevent the spread. In the fall, be sure to clean up all diseased fallen fruit and leaves meticulously and get it off the site (not in the compost). That will get rid of a lot of the pathgens so you will have less of a problem next year. Next year be sure to use dormant spray correctly. You might be interested at some point in Certificate in Fruit Tree Care at Learn.OrchardPeople.com. Hope this helps!

I have 11 different apple trees. They vary from 4-10 years old. I’ve only gotten fruit from two of the trees. One gives me about three apples a year. The other only fruited one time four years ago. None of the other trees have ever flowered. The second tree I mentioned hasn’t flowered in four years. I do not know why, I don’t know what kind of a professional to contact. No one I’ve contacted can tell me why my apple trees won’t flower. Would you know who to contact?

How sad!!! Have you ever done a soil test? If you get one done I’d like to see the results. Also what cultivars do you have and where do you live? If your trees don’t get enough chill hours or if they aren’t appropriate for your zone they won’t fruit properly.

Can I spray spinosad on my citrus trees well there budding??? Therecnot flowering yet but still buds
@Orchardpeople Жыл бұрын
Hi Anthony - read all instructions very carefully? Don’t spray anything unless you know it’s needed and avoid spraying at blossom time because pollinators and beneficial insects must be protected. Why do you want to use Spinosad?

I've had one gala and one fuji tree I planted 7 years ago and I've not had any luck. I get Cedar rust, and lose whatever apples take hold. I plan to follow the advice given here for after leaf drop and going forward. Anything else I should do? II have grass right up to the tree, should I mulch them instead ,compost or anything like that?
@Orchardpeople4 жыл бұрын
Hi Steve, that's great that you'll start to use organic sprays. And yes there's lots more to do to improve tree health. Do remove the grass around the tree. Each year layer around 2 inches of compost. Prune your trees annually and correctly. You can learn more by going to OrchardPeople.com and downloading my free eBook Growing fruit trees that thrive! Clarify if the products mentioned are registered for use in Canada.
@Orchardpeople4 жыл бұрын
Very good question Maureen! Most of the products are available in Canada - just sometimes under different names. Some, like Surround (kaolin clay) are sprays that are only available to people who have a pesticide licence (ie professional growers who sell their produce). Neem oil is a bit controversial here in Canada. You can buy neem oil for cosmetic and other purposes but it's not registered as a pesticide.

Calcium is crucial to spray during bloom As long as you spray it at night after the pollination time frame is done it it fine as. Ore flowers open the next day.
