ORGANIC IMPURITIES IN FINE AGGREGATES AND ABRASION TEST OF AGGREGATES
ORGANIC IMPURITIES IN COURSE AGGREGATE/ SAND FOR CONCRETE
Why we do this test??
The presence of organic compound in natural sands and aggregate sufficient quantities to be harmful , and hence it intended to weather further test are necessary and desirable
Harmless organic may cause coloration and certain naturally organic compounds do not cause coloration
Organic substance in fine aggregate and sand: if sand is extract in river bad , it may contain humus , decay vegetable , organic soil decayed animals materials etc.
These organic matters reference with cement setting and ultimate affect strength of concrete . It shows that presence of organic martials excess of limit in aggregate may be harmful
Procedure
Preparation of solution-
150 ml of water add 3% sodium hydroxide (NaOH) so 3% of 150 equal to 4.5 ml
Mix properly
: Procedure of test
Fill the -75 ml mark with 3% of solution of NaOH
The sand / aggregate shall be added until the volume measured by sand layers of 125 ml
The volume shall be then made up to 200ml by adding more solution
The bottle shall be stopped and shaken vigorously and then allow to stand for 24 hrs.
Compare the color of liquid above the test sample with the reference standard charts
