Hi Robbie. Those aphids won’t stop your roses blooming. I’ve also found adding banana peel to the surrounding root growth area, through out the year, has an amazing affect on reducing aphids and black spot. I was so shocked, I have a fair few DA roses and it was making a noticeable difference. I had years I didn’t use it and I saw huge differences. Now I spray roses with hard fast hose spray. Then I shake off the excess water. I plant a sacrificial plant near by, like a nasturtium as they love those. They’ll go destroy that rather than choosing a rose. I find the aphids tend to move on after spring, I think the baby birds eat most of them, in time. Using all of those tips plus neem if needed has meant I’ve not sprayed my roses in five years. I used to spray for black spot and aphids. Rose clear was my go to. Until experience taught me the above. The other thing I do if they’re exceptionally bad is to mix a weak solution of washing up liquid (dish soap) with water in a spray bottle and spray the rose. It’s very effective and people will say it’s still chemicals. But far less in a very weak solution of that than there is in a pesticide. Don’t add too much though as it can cause foliage problems. I’d say in a 1 gallon container you’d use less than 5 ml of washing up liquid. If you spray those roses daily, squish any survivors. Add bird feeders in your garden Plant a few sacrificial plants Start adding banana skins. I add brown bananas too. Might sound lazy but I just collect a few skins and then throw them around the rose. If it’s summer I will chop them to an “ in size. So they’re not so obvious. I wish I could share my inherited old rose with you. It went from 3/4 flowers a year. Always without leaves. Black spot so bad it ruined the whole shrub. To a rose that’s teeming with roses every year. The strongest scent I’ve ever smelt in a rose. Now I get minimal black spot. I remove the affected leaves so it doesn’t spread and keep them well watered. Once the new foliage ages, aphids typically disappear all but a few stubborn ones but they’ll soon vanish with the above regime. I’ve grown roses for 30+ years now.

Very helpful information. I recently purchased the Rose and Flower to use on my rose bush. I have mobility issues and I cannot get out and do the smooshing as often as needed. I want to add more rose bushes and it would be great if the aphids were gone before that. Always love your videos, Robbie.

I’ve been sprinkling diatomaceous earth EVERYWHERE! The roses and red valerian are getting it the worst in my yard. DE seems to help but the aphids are just absolutely relentless this year. Plus the diatomaceous earth doesn’t “look pretty” lol I may grab some of that synthetic stuff cause it’s just out of control! Thanks for the very helpful video!

I feel like with my veggie garden I will try the most natural method first. Like covering my brassicas so moths can't lay their eggs. Then move to an organic spray. With my flowers I will also try the most organic method, like spraying aphids with water first before spraying a pesticide. I will hand pick japanese beetles and put them in soapy water. Wait to pull out the big guns you know. 😊

No shame in helping your beloved plants battle insects and disease. It is so frustrating when you put so much time, effort and money into your lovely garden and it is under attack .😢 Robbie, you are a responsible gardener, obviously. Thank you for your honesty and sharing your journey with these nasty aphids and how you have come to your treatment decision. Good luck 🍀
