THIS VIDEO is THE BEST guide for my situation where got a house and I have really big height differences in my lawn due to holes and bumps. EVERYONE on youtube only talks about sand leveling and stuff that can be done when the lawn and ground below it is fairly level (compared to my situation). Never saw anyone go all in and do it from scratch like you did here. I only found your video when I finally stopped searching in English and tried it in Slovak which is strange 😅. Surprise surprise after months of search for a quality guide I found you, Sir. Thank you very much for this video. Its going to help me tremedously and I really appreciate your effort.

How many bags of sand would you recommend for a 1200 sq ft lawn?
@organickulture2 ай бұрын
If you are sowing a new lawn, 1/2 inch depth. If you will only level the existing lawn, then it would be best 1/4 inch depth, because with a thicker layer of sand, you can destroy the existing lawn. The procedure can be repeated every spring and autumn, so the soil absorbs all the sand without damaging the existing grass. This is how it will be easily calculated: For 1/4 inch depth (about 6 mm): Area: 1200 sq ft Depth: 1/4 inch (0.25 inch = 0.021 ft) Volume = Area x Depth 1200 sq ft x 0.21ft = 25.2 cubic feet For 1/2 inch depth (about 12 mm): 1200 sq ft x 0.42ft = 50.4 cubic feet Convert cubic feet to cubic yards: Since sand is usually sold in the cubic yard, we must convert cubic feet to cubic yards. 1 cubic yard = 27 cubic feet. For 1/4 inch depth: 25.2 cubic feet ÷ 27 = 0.93 cubic yards. For 1/2 inch depth: 50.4 cubic feet ÷ 27 = 1.87 cubic yards. Calculate the number of bags: A standard bag of sand usually contains about 0.5 cubic feet of sand. For 1/4 inch depth: 0.93 cubic yards x 27 cubic feet per yard ÷ 0.5 cubic feet per bag = 50 bags. For 1/2 inch depth: 1.87 cubic yards x 27 cubic feet per yard ÷ 0.5 cubic feet per bag = 101 bags. To summarize: For a 1/4 inch layer, you will need approximately 50 bags of sand. For a 1/2 inch layer, you will need approximately 100 bags of sand. If you plan to overseed your lawn while leveling the existing one, let me know so we can make new calculations 😄 🌱

If it's molehills, I would first level the ground, add some seed, and sprinkle 1-2 cm of soil. Feel free to roll the roller over newly sprouted grass, don't make circular movements. Longitudinal and transverse rolling will not damage new grass hairs, it will only strengthen them🌱

Thanks for a great tutorial. It is really beneficial for lawn renovation beginners. I am in the process of DIY lawn renovation process myself due to unresponsiveness of landscapers. I know I am a bit late for sowing seeds this year (14th October) therefore I am thinking of at least do some preparation ground work for spring. I wanted to kill off existing lawn using herbicides but there are still some green spots left and I guess due to vegetation slowing down, another treatment wouldn’t do any good. What is your suggestion I should do? Should I cover the lawn with foil and leave it over winter or should I try to mechanically remove old grass and weeds and do all preparation work (sanding, cultivating etc.)? Thanks for your answer in advance.
@organickulture3 ай бұрын
If the night temperatures still do not drop below 7 degrees Celsius in your area, you are not too late. I am currently working on a video of seeding and leveling the lawn (14.10), and these are the same conditions as when sowing, which you will see in the next video. Autumn is an excellent period for sowing a new lawn so that the grass takes root over the winter and already in the spring you will have a stunning lawn. The aerial part will not grow quickly, but the root will develop over the winter because it does not rest even in winter. If you have the opportunity and time, remove the existing lawn, with a tiller at least twice and remove roots and impurities, add sand if it is very loamy/compacted, fertilize, till again, and sow grass. If your lawn is up to 300 square meters, you can finish it all in seven days. Covering with foil does not help if temperatures are up to 25 degrees Celsius during the day. It should be at least 30 degrees (2 weeks) for the root to burn. I recommend tilling up to 30 cm deep to destroy deep-rooted weeds. I wish you good luck and let me know the result🌱
@0rthOd0x3 ай бұрын
@@organickulture You just gave me the motivation I needed. The weather forecast shows that for the remainder of October, night temperatures should not drop bellow 7 C. So I am willing to commit time and effort without the doubt, but the remaining green spots worry me. You're saying if I manage to remove the existing lawn with a tiller I should be good? Should I drop the tiller to 30cm immediately or should I do some scalping and shallow tlling beforehand? I intend to follow your other advice thoroughly as well. Thank you for your promt reply.
@organickulture3 ай бұрын
@@0rthOd0x It’s best to remove the existing lawn to about 2 cm deep to avoid clogging the tiller blades. There are various mechanical tools for this. If you can’t acquire that tool, then start by mowing the lawn to the lowest height. You will need to till 3-4 times. The soil is best slightly moist for tilling. In the video, I tilled on completely dry soil, so I had to go over it 6-7 times to reach a depth of 30 cm. Depending on the strength of the machine, you’ll see how many times you need to go over it to get the desired depth. Don’t forget to collect all the debris, especially thick roots. Everything else will decompose in the soil. This process is the most demanding but also the most important, as planting and rolling can be finished in just one day. Good luck!

Which chicken manure to get here in New York, its OCT 14th and I'm starting a new lawn, should I use chicken manure and top soil together or either or... where can I get the chicken manure? or what Brand will work best for sowing a new Lawn? Thanks in advance
@organickulture3 ай бұрын
It doesn’t have to be chicken pellet fertilizer if you’re having trouble sourcing it right now. I found some excellent organic fertilizer nearby that you can get quickly. You can add chicken manure in early spring to the existing lawn before the rain, or water it thoroughly. All organic fertilizers are good; it’s always beneficial to add some other organic fertilizer throughout the season due to the different compositions. It’s best to till the soil and fertilizer before planting to avoid a high concentration on the surface that could damage the seeds. If you’ll be tilling deeper (up to 12 inches) before planting, then apply nearly double the recommended dose of fertilizer. Good luck with your new lawn, and best regards🌱 norganics.com/index-12/index-11/fertilizers/natures_turf-8-1-9/

I only removed what the tiller brought up. If the soil has not been treated for deep weeds with plastic like I did, then I don't think it's necessary to remove the old lawn, as deep weeds will survive anyway. A better option is to go over the area multiple times with the tiller at a deeper setting, as shown in the video, and simultaneously collect all the weed roots that the tiller brings up. My lawn is now free of deep weeds. Thank you for watching, and I hope I was helpful.🌱

Hi, very informative video indeed. My lawn soil is very compact. I did grass seedlings three years ago but now only crab grass, dandoliens and xyz weeds left. Lots of crack on the lawn and i'm battling with bamboo rhizomes. I saw your videos and final results which i taken. First i will mow my lawn on very low height and cut all bamboos from surface whom are making seeds. Then i will spray vinaigre all over the lawn and will cover it with black plastic sheet for 6 weeks. Then i will start in july to tilling and add sand on the soil to loose it. Then next steps will come. I want to ask how can i know my compact soil is best for growing a healthy grass how can i test my soil i dont have any check here. And how could i know if i need to set ph or alkaline level of my soil. Or i just start what you recommend.
@organickulture7 ай бұрын
If you have very compact soil, then you definitely need to add a 5 cm layer of sand after removing the old turf. Check the pH value of your soil. In clay soils, the pH must not be below 6.5, which you can determine with a pH meter. You can find the device from 13 dollars: Ph/Fertility Tester: amzn.to/3OtJyav If you have the opportunity, add wood ash in late autumn, at the earliest after the second cutting of the new grass. It will break up the clay soil and preserve the necessary elements the lawn needs over the winter. To get started, follow the steps in the video, there will be more videos on repairing alkaline and acidic soils that you can do later. Good luck with your new lawn and thanks for watching 🌱

I have put new compost under this tree many times but it turns black every time and the grass never grows. Also, I have a lot of neighbours cats in my lawn, they have turned my lawn into a toilet. I have used cat repellants many times but they don't go away. In such a case, if I put plastic foil on the lawn, the cats tear it or damage my raised beds in anger. If there is any help for the trees and cats, then it is good. How do I grow grass under the tree and how do i prevent the cats to come? close Similarly, birds and pigeons visit my lawn a lot and they chewed all my grass seeds last time. Top insights: 🛠️ The correct preparation of the soil is essential for successful growth of the turf, including removing weeds and mixing sand for compacted soil. 🌿 Using organic chicken manure as fertilizer provides a healthy source of nutrients for the soil without the use of chemicals that can be harmful to the environment. 🧹 Removing impurities and leveling the site is important for an even surface and a successful sowing process. 💦 Proper watering after sowing the grass is essential for seed germination and growth of grass. 🪱 Dealing with earthworms is important to ensure they don't damage the new lawn, especially in the spring and fall when they are active. ✂️ Regular mowing of the grass after its growth will help maintain a healthy and tidy lawn.

@@andreacolella2044 I get it now. I had no prior experience with lawns and the shallow roots of magnolia trees. If it is feasible and not too extensive an area, raising the layer of soil by a few centimeters should suffice to ensure that your new lawn thrives and looks its best.
