Wow! It's rare that I see someone with more bookcases than me, but here it is. (I also have a full room, floor to ceiling. It's my favorite room in the house.) I see quite a few books in common on our shelves, so I'm curious now to go back and watch more of your videos. Thanks, KZbin algorithm.

Ooh that's amazing! I love that because it means you've probably already read a bunch of the ones I haven't gotten to, so you can help me prioritize! This is my favorite room too, even more so that I've made it more zen. :D

I'd saved this one till I'd caught up on your videos I was behind on, glad I did. I love the process of organising and making order and getting everything to fit in the available space as best as possible. I do think having the rows run horizontally will make it so much easier for you to skim through from side to side rather than zigzagging up and down. I really hate when I have to double layer books as after a few months I start forgetting what's where on the hidden layer and then it's a game of pulling random books out trying to guess where something is. Kind of like finding the secret book that opens the hidden passage in an old horror film except in my case the secret passage would be more books stacked against cobwebbed walls 😉. I'm looking forward to the next part coming whenever the muse to organise strikes again, she can be a capricious fairy that one 😜
@TheObsessiveBooksellerАй бұрын
That muse is my very, very favorite! I feel she's around the corner for some more playing around with books haha. For some reason having books hidden and vertical stacked was triggering stress and I didn't like being in the room. But after spanning them all out, the anxiety I felt over possibly missing something has gone away completely. Now I just need to alleviate the anxiety at so many options!

Impressive work. Whenever I do this I regret it during the process. Once when I'm about half way through and there's books all over the floor and nothing is properly reorganised and again when I find books I've missed that putting in their correct places involves shuffling loads of other things around. It looks so good when it is done. My Dad is coming next week to add some shelves to the bookshelf he built me which means, finally, no more double stacked books. At least for a while. I should go through my books - especially the read ones - and let go the ones I'm never going to re-read.
@TheObsessiveBooksellerАй бұрын
That’s awesome!! I bet it will feel so good to get things more spaced out. So cool your dad could build those. I definitely had that regret on the second day when it was way too late to turn back. At least it turned out okay, but I still have a bunch to do.
@SarahAsYouWishАй бұрын
That was a big project! You did great. Potentially moving should be a great motivator for getting rid of books that aren’t truly calling to you right now.
@TheObsessiveBooksellerАй бұрын
Thank you! Even considering moving is a wake up call to look more critically at everything. Also now that I’ve got the spacing so beautiful I don’t want to mess it up with more books, so I’ll need to let go some haha.
@BurkwoodАй бұрын
It really does look great. Also, it seems it will expedite a few little projects and distill away some fodder in the process.
@TheObsessiveBooksellerАй бұрын
Thank you! Yes I agree - it moved me forward in more ways than one. I’ve extra motive to simplify and let more go, and to stem the inflow so I don’t have to cram more in. That said there’s a book haul coming out next week. 😂🤦🏻♀️
@sonjameyer1179Ай бұрын
That was quite satisfying to watch :) I'm looking forward to the YA books being in RBH, I don't think you've read a lot of those over the last few years and they take up so much space. Would you ever do something like the Shelfie series again? I would really love to see the differences in your collection then and now.
@TheObsessiveBooksellerАй бұрын
Thank you! I’ve probably only read a handful of YA in recent memory. As it happen, I’ve been trying to decide on a way to present the new era of RBH. One idea was to make the random component what book I read, rather than what shelf I read from, so I could actually start at the very beginning of the feature and do a RBH that looks a lot like a Sunday Shelfie, but with a decluttering aspect. One shelf at a time as we make our way through the whole collection. Would that be a satisfying approach to watch? At least in theory?
@sonjameyer1179Ай бұрын
@@TheObsessiveBookseller Intersting idea. So you'd start at A and then go through the shelves one by one instead of picking a random order? I guess the RBH videos already had a "Sunday Shelfie" part at the beginning as you talk about the books on that specific shelf. I'm not sure I understand how picking the book randomly would work. Do you plan to do a shortlist of the books you're most excited about on that shelf and pick from them? Or just from all the books on the shelf?
@TheObsessiveBooksellerАй бұрын
@@sonjameyer1179 For what it's worth, I'm not totally sure how I'm going to do it yet. With this idea I'd start at A and work my way down the line, evaluating books like I did in RBH. It would subtly showcase the collection. I would be compiling a shortlist of exciting books as I go to be drawn from later. At first I think I might pick from my outstanding owned series, much like I'm doing for the ISC. Maybe even limit the draws to series I've STARTED for RBH and random draw a new on in once I've finished a couple or something. I go back and forth on how to do it, which is why I haven't started filming yet. The way I was doing it before was making me hate reading - starting a new series every time I wanted to film an episode. I need to figure out a way to get all the components into an episode while also honoring where I'm at with wanting to simplify. The other long-game strategy is to read the entire series for an episode, which would only produce one new RBH per quarter and wouldn't honor the showcasing part of the process.
@sonjameyer1179Ай бұрын
@@TheObsessiveBookseller Yeah, I think it's important to find a process that both works for you reading wise and also produces the content you aim for. I can totally see how the way you did it would be frustrating because it produced all the incomplete series. Maybe you can do a sort of transition phase now before starting the new round properly by concentrating on reading unfinished series this quarter? I guess the problem with the showcasing would always be that this is going to be a long process over several years, no matter in which order you do it and how you pick the books to read. Whenever you reach the final shelves, you'll have added new books tothe collection.
@TheObsessiveBooksellerАй бұрын
@@sonjameyer1179 That's a good point - it wouldn't be a true snapshot showcase of everything I have right now. I'll brainstorm on that, maybe it merits a shelfie tour in addition to RBH. That's it exactly, and I think that's a perfect solution. Do the transition until I feel I'm in a good place to start new things again and from there prioritize owned books. I think I have a cute way to set that up for random draw. I just started filming the new RBH this week and it's going well.

It’s one of my favorite projects to undertake, but I hope it stays somewhat organized for a while so I won’t need to do it again. I imagine it would be a huge undertaking for you as well. Maybe move to a bigger house? Haha kidding. It wouldn’t be as motivating to reorganize if you’d just have to box up a bunch.

I feel your shelf joy. I have been looking at my shelves thinking that some futile shuffling is in order. Small books where big books need to be, horror and fantasy occupying prime sci fi real estate. My wife is away this weekend perfect time to pull a ninja move and put some books on the downstairs shelves. She'll never spot it! (She totally will.).

This is the advantage of being 95% digital these days :) Most of my physical books are D&D game books these days. I just condensed all of my pango listed hardcovers into totes and am working on tossing them in the garage.
@TheObsessiveBooksellerАй бұрын
Yeah you’ve simplified to the max! I wouldn’t have to worry about where to put them if I didn’t have so many. I need to go back to at least reading the book digitally first before determining if they’re good enough to add to the collection.

Wow, that looked like a major effort! So satisfying though watching books get shifted around with the relaxing music. What are you going to do for RBH now? Reset/restart the project, or do something different? And did I hear that you might be moving? I hate to think that you might lose this amazing space. I can't even fathom the thought of having to move myself at this point, and my 1500 books. Not to mention losing all the spaces in my house that I have gradually tailored to my needs over the years. Having to start that all over again would feel daunting. We never know what life will bring though, so I suppose it's not outside the realm of possibility.
@TheObsessiveBooksellerАй бұрын
Thanks! It took it out of me for a couple of weeks, but I think it was worth the rather impulsive effort. I was just spitballing with Sonja a bit about that. I’m not sure yet. I have photos of the original shelves, but it doesn’t feel quite right to stage for how those vids would’ve looked before the change. An idea I’ve been churning is to start over and to alphabetically down the bookcases (so I can shift without messing stuff up as I get rid of things). Showcase all the titles like in Sunday Shelfie. Unhaul a few. And the change: draw randomly a book to read from my collection as a whole. Probably from a curated list of high priorities. The only problem is, I really really haven’t been enjoying starting a new series every time I make one of these videos. It’s too overwhelming. So I need to do something different for a while. I was thinking of just drawing from series I already own that I’m in the middle of. And perhaps doing some sort of 3 for 1 challenge there. Finish 3, start a new one. Or on the flip side, doing just fewer RBH episodes and committing to reading the entire series of whatever gets picked in the curated draw. I haven’t started filming anything yet because I’m just not sure how to approach it to satisfy my need to simplify while also making sure to include all of the fun components. Talking through it helps. Yes, it’s a daunting idea, to move. I’ll share a behind the scenes soon with loads more details. But pretty much no one will ever help me move again after the last time haha. I’ll need one U-Haul for stuff. The other for the books!
