In the middle of last month, my husband of 7 years fell ill. The local urgent care told us that he had a cold and to go home and treat the symptoms. But colds don’t give you raging fever with chills and lethargy… so at the beginning of December we took him to the emergency room where he was diagnosed (almost too late) with sepsis. He spent 3 days in the ICU fighting for his life. A fight that he won!! So that is my gratitude for this year. That I get to end it with him whole and on the mend.

Between you, Dawn and Dana I have transitioned from a fear and anxiety riddled woman with a debilitating chronic illness, to someone able to embrace who I really am. I have a wardrobe that cocoons my post menopausal shape, I’ve booted ALL the guilty/shame/ rejection stuff and toxic people, and you have been essential for helping me be a loving, tender human who has dropped the chains and is living FREE! I was diagnosed with ADHD when I was 40. I'm 49 now. I finally got the courage to do some online classes which terrified me because school was a nightmare for me. I spent 1/2 my middle school years in detention and my teachers told my mom I would never make it passed the 10th grade because I was so stupid. Well, guess what - I got A's. Unfortunately, I got COVID and was unable to complete my last 2 block courses which sucked, but I learned I am not stupid like I was always told. This was my big win for 2023! I love you Cas and your channel!

This makes me sad that teachers weren't clued in that not all people learn the exact same way and voiced such degrading opinions. I too deal with ADHD and maybe a hearing processing problem? But the truth of the matter is that we all can learn once we're given the right environment in which to learn. Well good on you!...You were always capable!

I inherited my mom’s house and I all her stuff. When I don’t want something anymore , I put in on a family chat what I want to get rid of. Then when no one wants it they say get rid of it or whatever you want to do with. It saves the guilt and I have been given permission to do what I want.. Last night my granddaughter and decluttered half of my clothes! Now all my clothes fit in one closet. We are going to donate the stuff today!

As a stroke survivor moving to a ranch from three story townhouse is going to be a dream!!! Which also means decluttering so much. Loved this. It motivated me to get up, get out my sewing kit and mend a pillow that I have moved off/on my bed for the past 3 years - that had a small tear in the bottom. Every day - 2x a day I would touch this pillow and I had the fleeting thought that "I should sew that up", but I did not. Your comment about unfinished projects really hit home and was the needed motivation to get it done. Took all of 5 minutes to do it, but boy did it make me feel powerful and liberated. :) Thank you Cas. Hope 2024 is a wonderful year.

You can do this! I'm in the same place...only it is a bit longer. Around 5-6 years. I am trying to do it one box or bag or pile at a time. If I get that done, I am happy. Don't pressure yourself too much about what needs to be done. Set small reasonable goals and do it. If you can do more, you'll feel better. I learned making lists of stuff only bullied me and made me feel bad if I couldn't get it all done.

@@resarm5007 @maryellenyork2819 For me it's been almost 7 years very constrained by health problems (mind-boggling!) and a pile in the kitchen got higher than the counters! Yikes!!! But I had an epiphany that simple deconditioning from being ill so long is a FIXABLE issue that will hugely improve my life, and now I'm looking at decluttering as part of my physical rehab program. 😄 Win-win! Things that have been helping me: 1) Onion Method of *easiest* stuff first (clutter muscles get stronger with practice : - ) 2) Setting Process vs. Outcome goals so I always have a "win" 🤩 e.g. "Look for things to let go of for X minutes on timer" (e.g. 5 to 15 minutes) vs. "Clear out closet" I have a weird affection for my visual timer now! lol 😃❤⏲ *3) Temptation Bundling with something enjoyable during/afterwards (game changing!!!)* 4) Reminding myself that just sorting through items can be anxiety-SOOTHING because Knowing what's there and Taking action can both make things feel less overwhelming < : - ) 5) Reminding myself that the discomfort of letting go of harder things passes, and the GOOD feeling of having less stuff LASTS : - ) 6) Scheduling decluttering with electronic reminders instead of waiting to be inspired because motivation usually comes *after* action, not before it : - ) 7) Starting with areas in my direct eye line from wherever I spend the most time so I'm constantly reminded that I've *already* made progress and can continue to do so! I also like to prettify surfaces with a plant or picture or something to motivate me to *keep* it clutter-free. ; - ) 8) Visualizing before I start how much better I'll feel just to have taken action, and how GREAT it will feel when I've crossed my clutter threshold and my house feels peaceful and easier to maintain! Huzzah! 🤩 Godspeed and good wishes! Amazing things are possible with time! 🌈🌱🌿💐🍀💖

Congratulations on the speaking engagement. You are a wonderful person and deserve those standing ovations. I also am on the ADHD spectrum as well as two of my daughters, however we are all affected differently. It can be both a blessing and a curse. My grandson was the most challenged, he was sent to a special school in first grade, where he was diagnosed. He took meds until he was out of school. Today he is 26, and functional. I might never have known the seriousness of acute ADHD and acute ODD without the experience of raising him. I have so much sympathy and respect for those who are struggling with it, even on the lower end of the spectrum, without knowing they have it. You have done so much to raise awareness, and to let people know it is real and there is help, whether it is talk therapy or meditation. It can be life changing.

It is so very important to find, AND REMEMBER, the positives. For me, our 12 year old St. Bernard/Treeing Walker Coonhound is a huge source of joy. Even in her old age, she brings a smile. You should definitely be proud of yourself for your speaking engagement success! I'm sure the audience wanted to show their support since it was such an emotional moment--but also, you Are awesome! You help so many people, including me, make their lives better by getting rid of stuff that doesn't work for them, and figuring out how to organize what does work in a way that helps them manage their stuff instead of being managed by their stuff--and that's Such an accomplishment! 🥰 One of my best moments of 2023 was celebrating July 4th (I'm in the US) with my extended family--with more of us than have celebrated together since my grandmother passed away in 2016, before a lot of the kids were born. Most of them were old enough to stay up and watch the fireworks my cousin shot (he has several acres of land), and it was so cool to have that experience again after so many years!

Awesome video as usual. 😊 I began this year with some not so fun health issues, but they’re under control now. Also made it to London with my husband-our first international trip. While there, we spent time with my oldest friend.

Thanks for this video, Cas. I’m feeling so good right now! We’ve been doing the hard work over the last several years and we’ve gotten rid of most of these categories. Also, this year money is particularly tight. So I had an honest conversation with friends and family asking that we not exchange gifts. For us it was a relief. My husband and I also did not exchange gifts. We are planning a small get away in January, instead. From a cluster standpoint, I’m feeling really good this year!

I feel grateful everyday for a husband who spoils me and two grown boys who still love their mams. It's been a roller coaster of year. I broke my wrist in the spring and my knee cap a few weeks ago but I find humor in it and know I won't be on crutches forever. One dog died in March and we had to put the other one to sleep in October, but I'm thankful for the years we had together. One was 12 and the other one 16. I think it is important to choose to be grateful even during difficult times. Thank you for always putting out great videos. May 2024 be the best year yet!

My dad always wanted to take his family to black pool for a holiday. He was diagnosed bipolar schizophrenia when I was five. His health has deteriorated last two years. This year I took my kids and partner to Blackpool. It rained the whole weekend, but we had a great time at the amusement park, the waterpark, saw elephants at the zoo and walked the three mile street connected to the piers. When I next saw my dad, I got to show him all the amazing photos. He was so happy, and we talked about his youth growing up in England. We compared our holidays and he was so happy that I got to go, and shared his joy of the place with his grandkids.

I had an absolute crappy 2023...The only thing I did do, was to quit a job that I had for over 10 years and that had me totally stressed and burned out. It has gotten better, but it's still really hard at my age (60) and being over-educated (doctorate degree), but I don't hate my job or myself anymore. So I am grateful for that. But this past year has been so hard. I pray 2024 is a year to celebrate and lift me up, instead of making me feel horrible about myself. I'm living alone for the first time in over 30 years after raising three daughters and being a caretaker for my elderly parents for 12 years. I can finally breathe. I hope your 2024 brings you health, happiness, and joy!!

Cas, I just made 48 on the 19th. I haven’t worn makeup in years and I find that has helped a lot for my face. The only thing that makes me look old as my husband says is my hair. It has just about gone completely grey and I’m ok with that. I started dying my hair in my early 20’s but I had already started going grey in my late teens. I stopped dying it cuz one it’s to damn expensive and second it was killing my hair. I realized a couple of years ago that I was ok with it going grey. I told myself I earned this grey cuz of all the good and the bad I have been through in the past 28 years of being a wife, mother (1 daughter) and now grandmother of 3. We as women need to stop treating our selves horrible as we age but celebrate it cuz we are still alive for the more important things in life.

I am with you 100% regarding crafts. I tasted many crafts until I found crochet and knitting. I love those so much I can taste them in my teeth. I get up 2 hours early and stay up 2 hours late just to "practice". I have the graveyard of all the crafts I tried along the way still in my home. In fact I have 4 bins sitting near my garage door in my kitchen to empty and donate the remnants of "when i get around two-it" 2024 is my year to clear all the crap. I bought the Taking Your House Back course and will complete it with at least a "C". *grins*. To me that means letting go of 50 to 70% of my crap I haven't even looked at since I moved into this treasure of a home over 6 years ago. Thank you Cass for all that you do. Happy New Year!!

In May 2023 my husband and I walked 225 miles in Portugal and Spain - 19 days total. It was amazing and I’m grateful to have the chance and the health to do things like that. In another video you said to declutter partly used notebooks. I had so many and they are finally gone! Phew! Thanks for all you do to help us on our organizing journeys. Cas!!!!! You are my hero!!! Way to do something hard and accomplish something new. (speaking at the conference). Almost anytime I give a "talk" or do any public speaking, I get a little teary or totally cry and can barely speak, I am always embarrassed and feel like a loser. However, whenever I have been to something where this happens to a speaker, I usually love their speech/talk because they were real. We may see it as a weakness in ourselves but I am confident you touched lives and hearts that day. Love you Cas. This year, your are on my gratitude list. Thanks for making a difference in my life through your videos.

Great video. I relate to most everything you brought up. Another thing is "melancholy". For me, I have a hard time with pictures. Pictures of the past, of "happier times", of people no longer here. It makes me feel sad and lonely and I regret things I never got to say that I wish if only they were still here and on and on. Maybe a mental problem but those things go in a box. Sometimes I feel happy remembering times of old and sometimes it just takes me spiraling to the dark "ugly place". Gahhh!

Great perspectives. The bullies, lol! I've been openminded to my style, a bee? a butterfly? or?...since you introduced your concepts regarding it. I recently had a breakthrough with clear see through backpacks filled with things that I keep and use intermittently but drive me crazy when organized traditionally. I discovered that seeing them and not having them spill into other things or sharing space with disimilar objects or tasks frees up my mind and makes me unlazy toward the task of getting it out or returning to its same spot. Then I hang the backpacks on hooks on the laundry/utility wall in plain sight. It's a room for utilitarian purpose so who cares how that looks. Speed finding. 1. gloves and caps. 2. battery powered lint remover, emergency sewing kit, button bottle, jewelry polishing cloth, and the shoe creams, brushes and rags in the front pouch. 3. clean dishrags, kitchen towels. copper balls 4. & 5. first aid emergency supplies. One pack for the house, one for the car trunk. Sure I have to zip and unzip the thing, but I don't mind. Missing socks and wire bras: I've made friends with laundry mesh bags. Less loss. And no more bras tangled with clothes. Same with bathrobe belts. No guilt--the bag doesn't have to be full to use!

I'm grateful that I found you at Craft Fest and learned better ways to declutter faster and that is okay for me to let go of things I've held onto for decades. I'm still going thru things, but continuously getting things done. I've got more than I realized. A garage holds a great deal. 😳 And I've been doing this alone. Sentimental things are the most difficult to let go of. This year, my friend volunteered to help me. She's a Godsend! She pushes me out of my comfort zone. Helps me make goals and meet them. We only worked together for 2 days but we accomplished a great deal! 😊❤

One way to honor things like antiques is to take a picture before donating, put it in a scrap book, and write down beside the picture what you know about the item's history, especially any funny stories. Makes a great heirloom to pass on to the next generation, minus the stress!

I just love listening to you…you are truly an inspiration. I have decluttered so much by only listening to your podcasts the past 2 weeks. I have been feeling less stressed and I know it’s because of less stuff. Now everywhere I go in the house, I see an area and I want to declutter…it’s like I have the declutter bug😂. My joys in 2023 were my 19 year old son had an internship he loved , with the possibility of a permanent job this Summer, my daughter applied to colleges and my husband had a heart scare, but it was controlled by medication. I had a knee replacement and am walking better.

I recently found out that our library has a free shelf for books who have been retired from the library or for books that other people would like to get rid of. It's at the very beginning of the library and anybody can take or leave a book as they choose. I love this because then you can get rid of that book that you don't want. But sometimes you can also find a gem that you do want.

My favourite memory of 2023 was visiting the Badlands, Yellowstone with my 82 year old dad when we moved me across the continent. Made the best out of a hard time due to having long Covid. There are still many wonderful experiences you can have with people, even when you have lost so much. My grandma’s last words to me 20 years ago were “I love you” . When the life you have known falls away there is still love, shining brighter than ever. My blessing to everyone for the new year 🥰
