You may already have one, but as a fellow "preparer", I just wanted to mention the importance of an emergency locator beacon. You never know what could happen in the outdoors. Especially, during the dryer months of the year. The Sherpa is a great addition for your setup. Happy Trails!

I don’t camp or own a freeze dryer, but I’m finding useful tips for grid down situations or emergencies. The Sherpa could easily be used for evacuations or grid failures & use the clear label holder to list contents. A supply of clothing, toiletries (including toilet paper & bathing supplies), a food supply with eating utensils/plates/bowls/napkins & the 4th bag for possible misc. items including important documents. During an evacuation or emergency, the bags are conveniently stored together & can easily be grabbed to go.

It all may change the more you continue your journeys. It did for me so many years ago. You may find that you can go without a stove and switch to a hiking-type stove to heat water. A lot of things ended up being left behind just to make things easier for set up. Some things were NEVER kept behind; first aid kit, fire extinguisher, one pot, toilet paper, water, food (but we found that we were only eating once a day and that changed too). I cooked over fire instead of stove. Great stuff! You keep on keep'n on! Blessings and safe journeys!🥰

Dear Pam, thank you for your amazing generosity of time, experiences, and resources with all of us. I’m retired and has been learning all sorts of things on KZbin. I came across your channel by chance and have been watching them continuously. You are a Renaissance Woman. You are knowledgeable and conversant in many fields. You are down to earth and has common sense. I feel grateful and am truly privileged to sit at your feet. I am learning a lot and have started preparing for food storage. I want to be self-sufficient. I will be watching your videos and search for others that you have previously made. I do have a practical question. On two videos, you mentioned the name of the sanitizing spray you use for your counter,but I did not catch it either time. Can you please repeat this information again? Thank you very much. Lai Ling

Goodness! That Sherpa is cool! As a loooong time camper, my stuff evolved. I used to have a big kitchen box that I designed, but found it to be awfully cumbersome. I took a nylon gym bag (about the size of a carry-on) for my food bag. I nested my 10” cast iron skillet with a Farberware 5 qt stockpot, and a small nesting camping set of 2 small pans. Eventually, I settled on Corelle plates & bowls, because l don’t like paper or plastic. A couple of large mugs, a Melitta coffee funnel & filters, a wooden spoon, a pancake turner, a whisk, a knife, salt & pepper, cinnamon, a few herbs…it works great and is easy to carry. Since we were car camping, we used big canvas bags for food items. Your Stanley food cooker would be a great addition to the equipment! We have an old green Coleman stove & a stand for it, but I often set it on the end of the picnic table. Having a tent you can stand up in is very important now that we are a bit older! We haven’t been camping for awhile…perhaps if we got a bed like yours…
@oldtimerlee88202 жыл бұрын
As campers for many years, we pared down considerably as we learned what we actually needed. Not only does it save space, it just makes life easier when extra stuff always seems to be in the way. I don't like plastic either, and especially when it comes to silverware. An inexpensive set of stainless can last a lifetime of eating meals on the trail.
@trailgrazers36902 жыл бұрын
Lots of different ways to camp, for sure! Thanks for sharing.
@danbev85422 жыл бұрын
@@oldtimerlee8820. I like your paring down comments. We tried stainless plates, but found them too cold - or too hot to the touch! Ours are now cat food plates! We are all different in what we consider valuable to bring. Also, our needs can change with varying circumstances…new health issues, for example.
@oldtimerlee88202 жыл бұрын
@@danbev8542 Same thing with enamelware plates, cups & such. We had a set of Melamine in our camper. Depending on the circumstances, we've used paper plates waxed /parchment paper and bowls from frozen steamer meals. Even a brown paper bag can the the "plate" for some meals.
@danbev85422 жыл бұрын
@@oldtimerlee8820 Yup! Make do, and figure out new ways. One huge difference between my family and Dr Pam’s is we now travel in a Honda CR-V - waaay smaller than the Professor’s camper! Our biggest vehicle in the old days with kids, was a mini van. We loaded at least 2 canoes and bikes on top.

Wow! I absolutely love that storage design. For years I've used a large hard plastic box and keep it packed so it contains everything we need for a road tent trip (It was repacked into a bag designed to carry golf clubs with enough room also for tent and chairs when we flew to the US from the UK to tour some national parks on a camp trip. We had literally everything we needed in that bag apart from the gas bottles we picked up from Walmart upon arrival). It works well because you don't need to worry too much when planning but it is quite a game fitting everything in a single box or bag and invariably the thing you want at any given time is at the bottom of the box. Fine if you camp for a few days in one spot but if you're moving on daily, a pain. Being well organised and well equipped is the difference between a great trip and an OK trip for us.

My husband bought me a freeze dryer for our anniversary. I’ve been freezing everything that isn’t nailed down. My question is- How do you organize the things that you freeze dry? Your video was great today!😊
@trailgrazers36902 жыл бұрын
LOL! Love that you are having so much success with your freeze drying. We put our FD foods in 2-quart jars and keep them in the box. Then we organize the boxes by type--potatoes, meats, dairy, etc. Then we organize the boxes on sturdy shelves. We are in the process of trying to improve on that strategy as well. We still have to pull boxes off the shelves to look for the jar we want. I need to put some kind of label on each box listing what is inside. It is a work in process!
