@@BORMo1976 So many reviews are sans day-one-patch level of performance. At least John here waited to get and test it with that patch and the majority of the slowdowns are eliminated. TBH other than a couple of periods right near the start that were clearly framerate compromised, I've not noticed a single drop in the 3-4 hours I've played so far.

I was playing along hoping for another "Waters Cleansed" moment like in Blind Forest when you open up the Ginso Tree and the Moon Grotto becomes this gorgeous place that had me grinning like a kid, and boom, Sanctuary in the Glades. Enchanting is the only word that describes it for me. I'm in love with these games. Art design, music and great gameplay perfected.

the second chase sequence had my framerate so low the game literally ran in slowmotion... and with only 50% GPU usage and less than that CPU usage. so there are performance issues with this game and it is 100% software related.

The Ori games are some of my personal favorite plaformers of all time. I play on PC via steam. There's no HDR options and I read a comment on another youtube video saying that the devs are still working on proper HDR implementation on the PC version. I normally have HDR ON in windows 10 display settings. I do have a custom color profile I made with my Spyder and I set digital vibrancy to 60% in the nvideo color controls. Overall this makes windows use not washed out. And I use a 43" HDR 4K monitor on a 1080TI. With this setup Ori play at full 4k and can do 60 fps but with the stuttering as experienced in the video. However I created a custom 21:9 resolution of 3840x1646 to see how the game looks and I have to say it takes full advantage of the ultra wide resolution and the panoramic view of the game is all there. Yes my screen is blank at the top and bottom but that cinematic look with this beautiful art style is incredible. Then switching back to normal SDR on the desktop and the game runs buttery smooth. Not hitching at all.

Got it on Steam, literally encountered one visual bug in the 10h of my current playtime (not done yet) and that was it. First load took a while, but that was it, installed on a 7200 RPM HDD. No frame dips with a 7y old i5-4670k CPU and a GTX1080, but that's to be expected. :'D

wait is well worth it because this game is absolutely amazing! down to the super fluid and fun combat, the smooth, fluid, and fun movement for the platforming, the exploration, the story-book-like story structure, the narrative, the music both in quality and fitting perfectly for the scenario and landscape, the absolutely gorgeous artwork, hand-painted design, and overall very strong use of colours. Honestly playing on the X1X i didnt notice the sustained drops drops during general traversal at all, defiantly nothing near 40fps which i really feel like i would have noticed... weird, only temporary drops in really heavy combat moments. I did have the really bad freezing and hitching when moving between areas, it was way worse than any sustain drops, i surprised you mentioned it so briefly. playing on the 120hz output btw. PC version also downloaded fine for me, but I did it through the xbox beta app, not the store, maybe that would work for you. Though when actually in the game i had sound issues with that version, no frame rate issues though. Edit: so i reinstalled it on PC and that seems to have fixed my sound issues, so thats good.

I played the game on PC with 512GB NVME SSD ... And i have no problem with loading or frames drops !! And i thinks this is the case Because the game only use images or layers more than 3D models .. so you need a fast storage to load all those images without any problem :)

The windows store has some set-up requirements that mean you have to choose any disk you want to install games to as the system set "where new apps are saved" before you can successfully install to that drive. As long as you've set it up once, though, you can then choose that disk when installing. Definitely something people with only one disk won't notice, but since I use three, I've had to wrestle with it before.

Runs perfect on my PC so far. Obviously after the day one patch. 3900x and RTX2080. 1440p. My frame rate is max limit is set to 117fps, just below my vsync cap on my LGC9. Looks beautiful sounds even better on my 7.2.4 Atmos system. I'm only 1.5 hours in as I only get a chance to play in the evening and the last couple days my friends wanted to play warzone.

The new update adds HDR for the PC and updates it for the Xbox. They really dialed it in and it went from looking fantastic to spectacular. You guys should revisit it and compare pre to post update.

So strange. The first thing i noticed was the amazing performance i achieved with this game. A constant 144 fps on my GTX 1070 @ 1440p. Loading times and everything are perfectly fine from an SSD. Looks like the game just wasn't very well optimized for consoles and only tested on PCs.

I think he mainly played the game on XBox and that's where he noticed all the major problems. The PC version he played seems to be the one from the MS Store, which might be the reason for the performance issues he noticed. Maybe the UWP version doesn't work as well as a native Win32 app that you would get from Steam. So maybe it isn't a console problem and it's just an UWP problem, that has to be solved.

I had major performance issues on my 2080ti before they issued an 8GB patch. It was so poor I played the Xbox One X version (it's crossplay so your save carries over) It's been fine since the patch though.

@Van Dammage To be completely honest i only reached 140 fps, because i have it limited to 140 fps in the Nvidia driver, because of my Gsync monitor. I only said 144 Hz, because i didn't wanna explain the difference in a lengthy post. The result is the same though. I reach the maximum framerate i can get with my setup which is 140 fps (basically the same as 144 fps). vSync is disabled, since i have a Gsync Monitor limited to 140 fps. I use RTSS to rendering a fps counter and a frametime historgram graph in every game at my machine to check if everything runs smooth. Consistent and stable frametimes are the most important thing to me in every game. Even more important than a high framerate. After reading all these post I'll run some tests with CapFrameX, though. Then I'll know what's up.

For me, this game is like old friends coming together to make something amazing. I love how influenced by Hollow Knight it is. Also, something about the sound effects gentle use of an ambient soundscape, combat trials and races, as well as npc interactions remind me a lot of Okami. I can't put my finger on exactly why but its wonderful either way. The world is so, so gorgeously imagined this time around (not that Ori OG was not) If not for the frame rate and graphical issues I'd say 10/10 but 9/10 until those are fixed I guess.

Must be all the lighting effects. My W7 system* with a GTX960 gets hammered when I leave it on 1080p60 100% res scale, no issues with the original ori, hollow knight, celeste, yooka (3D)/yooka 2(2D).. only other game I had run into performance issues like this was Tetris Effect which has all sorts of visual effects which I thought didn't look very taxing. *just pointing out W10's recent instability with games wasn't a factor here. After using 75% res scale most slowdowns stopped besides the deaths, and some new area loading hitches.

KZbin shadowbanned me for some reason, so I don't know if you can read this, but if you can: Good news. 3DV community is still alive. Universal patch makes the game playble and enjoyable already. The usual suspects promised to fix the remaining issues, but are currently busy with other stuff so it will take some time. Also, please, someone tell the Digitial Foundry guy who's in love in CRT monitors, to check out Ori in 3D Vision. Something tells me we'd get a separate DF video about it cause he would not be able to keep the excitement to himself. The 3D adds so much to Ori games it cannot be described in words. The Steam version runs beautifully around 150 fps at 1440p on my machine. There are occasional I/O stutters when running off an HDD though and loading times could be better.

I'm playing it on PC thanks to gamepass. No fps problem here, 130-160 fps on 1080ti. Love the game so far, just like the first! PS: I only notice weird glitches when I first install it on traditional hard disk, like stutter and strange sound every time game try to load new areas... Move installation on SD and problem solved. Maybe is my hard disk, but I have no problems with other games.

Loved Ori and the Blind Forest, had my XboxOne X for around a month. I also love Ori and the Will of the Wisps but I am going to finish my Gears Of War 5 play through, until they've patch Ori because it has awful slow down. It's not like frame rate drops it's like it's running in slow motion in certain parts, the windmill area. I agree the Game Pass for me is great for the discounts 20%, because I like owning my games. I own all the Gears Of War games, I brought the GOW Ultimate and then seen in Asda GOW 4 that came with four Bonus games GOW1,2,3 & Judgment for an amazing £18.95. Downloaded GOW with games Pass then brought it that Friday with a 20% discount making GOW5 £39.99. But I believe the Game Pass has come at a cost because AAA £60 games on release like Gears 5, Halo 5 etc have awful micro transactions which should not be in AAA first party games.

Hope they patch soon, the game is beautiful, sound, gameplay everything is on point! Certain moments it just starts to play in slow motion for an extended period, looks pretty cool actually, the animations in slo mo! Should be an easy patch

@Digital Foundry -- To download the PC version from the Windows Store do the following: Use the Win+i Key to open settings, TYPE: del and select: Delivery Optimization settings, where it says "Allow downloads from other PCs" turn that OFF. Then click: Advanced options, under Download settings, you want to either UNTICK both options OR put them both on 100%. Retry the download and you will be GREAT. Windows Store FIXED and downloading as fast as your ISP allows! CHEERS!

On my PC it drops frames to 110 fps on certain sections on 4k. And that's basically the it in terms of performance issues. Game is buttery smooth on a decent rig.

The issue with the clear pause when respawning or loading in is an issue with the Steam version as well. Been running the game from a NVMe drive on a decent spec system and i end up with the pause when loading.

On pc 1080ti/8700k ultrawide 1440p/100fps it looks and plays like a dream with some minor stutters. Loading from ssd around 7 seconds. Amazing game that's worth a buy on pc.

For this type of game Why would you need ray traced global illumination? Seems a lot of the background is semi static. What would it improve? Could you give me a bit more specific case where this would enhance the visuals so I will understand what you have in your mind :)

Given all that is going on in this game i expect dips in frame rate. Like I wouldn't even compare it to other metrovania games because it's unlike other metrovania games.

There seems to be a weird bug that doesn't affect everyone where overall performance suffers significantly. I ran into this problem once where framerates were extremely low (15 fps or less?) and a restart on my Xbox was needed. I also had loading problems where the initial load time took more than 5 minutes before I was able to get into the game (and a few times where the game would just get stuck in the title screen). About loading, I also noticed variable loading when opening up the map or any other menu. Sometimes it's instant, sometimes takes a second.

I had this same issue when booting up the game for the first time. I restarted my console and then it was fine.

@@andyward8430 Hopefully was just a one-time thing. I've read about others with a similar issue and it not getting fixed even after a hard reboot. My loading problem was strange though because it happened after I restarted my Xbox. Then it fixed itself the next day.

I picked up the collectors edition for Xbox yesterday and within the first 30 minutes I could tell there were some issues running on my base Xbox one. The frame rate dips hard in some places and the stuttering and hitching made it rather frustrating to play. I decided to also pick up the PC version from the windows store. Had no problems installing and booting it up. It plays considerably better on my PC, However there are still some issues: There are still small hitches when traversing through the world, these seem to manifest in a dropped frame or 2. I assume this is down to accessing data, it also seems to time into where the new checkpoint system is placed. The game is installed on a 1tb m.2 fyi. GPU wise its barely reaching 40% load on a 1070ti, CPU is a similar affair where its barely reaching 40% on an I7 6700k. This indicates to me the engines struggles to pull data from the disc, more optimisations would benefit here. Lastly I have encountered a number of bugs and glitches so far, there are usually related to the world psychics, in one area where I had to traverse over a spider web infested cave there are these cocoon things which you need to grab and climb onto to get higher. The psychics on these were just utterly broken, Ori could not latch onto them and jumping into them it appeared as if Ori had an invisible bubble around her which pushed the cocoons away. Dashing into them would cause them to literally flip out and bungie around the screen. Another one on the intense windmill escape there is a part where a spiked roof falls down onto a mill after you jump into it, on my initial play through the spiked roof had already fallen in meaning I couldn't get inside the mill and essentially reached a dead end where I couldn't escape the water. A reset fixed this. This part makes me think the checkpoint system isn't working correctly and not resetting certain things within the world after a death. Another was on the spider boss, again with these cocoons, when she uses the laser attack I jumped behind a dangling cocoon to avoid it but the dreaded psychics flipped out once she lasered the cocoon and it bounced around the screen smacking Ori and pushing her through the wall causing me to get stuck inside of it then fall through to the bottom of the world where a never ending plane of water exists where I ended up drowning. With these few issues ironed out with a patch or 2 I could see this game topping the 1st one for me, however currently I might take a break from it until then. Along with avoiding the Xbox one S version altogether.

Hey John, question...you said installing the Windows Store version failed...do you have games set to install to another drive or partition or in the default location on C: drive? I have had issues installing certain games outside of the default C: even though it let's you select other locations.

Dudes, I'm not the biggest platform gamer in the world but I will tell you that this is, by far, the most beautiful platforming game I have ever played in my life. At the beginning of the game it almost feels like you're playing an interactive Pixar movie, it's that good. Edit: what are these performances issues John is taking about? I guess it's just a console thing because pc is rock solid.

Unity engine is too heavy for old Jaguar cores on a consoles. Devs have to look at that issue.

I'm playing in an s it literally shut my xbox down twice trying to start the game. I'm about 3 hours in and the game freezes for about 7 seconds to bring up the map and when I die and respwan the game freezes for like almost 10 seconds

A quick stop-gap could be to have a 1080p60 mode on X and a 30fps limiter for S. Say what you will about 30, but I would rather a solid 30 over wavering between 30 and 60 all of the time. I mean, it's one thing on my pc to just live with a few dips to 50-ish (for those poorly optimized pc ports that crop from time to time) and allow tearing and another one entirely when the frames are very unstable and shoot all over the 30-to-60 range. I will play this on X with downsampling in a week or two to allow for some patching. FWIW - my experience with downloads via the Xbox (Beta) App has been better than with the store, and since they are supposed to use much of the same functionality (two different front ends to the same back end, to put it overly simply), I have to wonder if some of the minor differences in how that works means anything of if my experience is just luck of the draw.

According to reviews, the only thing of note that is wrong with the PC version (WS/Xbox App) is a lack of HDR support at the time me posting - perhaps I will just play that and hope my 2070S SC Ultra powers past any port issues. I have Gamepass Ultimate from that crazy conversion deal (convert all Gamepass and XBL gold to Gamepass Ultra for 1$), so checking the Steam version doesn't really make any sense (some of the Steam reviews mention bugs, however).

12:30 microsoft store is a joke overall in windows 10. Limiting download speed, crashes and games stopping downloading, some games doesnt work (rage 2), etc. I spent 5 hours to download ori because the download speed was instable. At the same time, i downloaded a game from steam store and i reached top speed of my isp provider.

@@baconwhip i was downloading ori from microsoft store and it was in low speed, then i decided to donwload another game from steam just for test. Steam was normal. I downloaded a game with 3gb in couple of minutes but ori's download was in low speed, even the download from steam was finished. Do you understand or i have to draw?

The game is amazing but after getting to the water mill area I started having several technical issues. Load times for instance were super fast but after getting to that zone they became much longer, to the point that one time it lasted minutes and after that I had to do a reset because it only load the UI. Though it won't stop me from playing it, because honestly I think combat, movement, level design, art direction, music and sound design are fantastic. But it is a shame.
