Just be sure to check which USB standard your router is using. Some older routers use USB 2.0 so the read and write speeds would be dreadful. If your router has USB 3.0 ports that's a great idea though, so thanks for posting that comment as I am sure I would never have thought of it otherwise.

I'm considering purchasing an Orico Enclosure from Amazon. However a lot of the reviews people left have to do with their hard drives falling asleep after being idle for a short period of time, making it impossible to access documents and folders on without rebooting the entire enclosure. Is this true and is there a work around for this issue?
@piepie612182 жыл бұрын
Did you ever find a solution to this? I was also wondering the same thing. Or did you find a product that you chose and would recommend?
@mauricehinton58892 жыл бұрын
@@piepie61218 I ordered the Orico Enclosure but I returned it since I didn't like the reviews. I ultimately decided to go with the Mediasonic ProBox HF2-SU3S2 4-Bay Enclosure. It's cheaper than the Orico, but it serves my purpose. It was pretty simple to set up, it's super quiet(IMO), and 4 months in, I have no complaints. I have 2-10TB 3.5 HD's currently and in few more months, I plan on getting 2 more 10TB HD's. I would recommend going with the MediaSonic ProBox if it suites your needs, but remember, if you turn off your PC, you'll have to manually turn your enclosure back on, when you turn your PC back on, otherwise your drives won't show up.
@mauricehinton58892 жыл бұрын

Here is a wild guess: S/w Raid (Orico's or Windows Raid or zfs) will not allow it with this unit because even when switched to 'Clear-Raid,' this unit's h/w raid card is presenting all the disks together as a single virtual volume. So sundry softwares sense there's little to nothing left. I.e. it thinks, "Only one volume or drive, my Precious? Thens nothings fors us's to dos." Kindest regards, neighbor.

@GanymedeXD8 ай бұрын
Why does it help with that? No support for multitasking at all … if you have the enclosure or multiple hard disks attached … exactly the same outcome. Or simply one large hard disk. The benefit is that you can put multiple old hard disks into one enclosure as case space is limited … or combine smaller ones to a RAID system. I trashed all my external hard disks … binned cases and cables and have one tidy solution so I did not have 5 external each with usb connection and power connection. But with multitasking? Nothing at all aas just hard drives.

Nice video actually just started getting into Organizing my systems over the years.. and man was there a lot of stuff, lot of duplicates and things I sorted through. Currently have 2 docks, that I am looking to upgrade... I consolidated almost all my data from my laptops to a 4tb drive, and my media to to another 4tb drive. I now have 3 extra drives laying around that I am going to use for current projects, and as I finish those projects, I save onto the 4tb drives. The docks while, I had them, are nice, but they just don't give that professional look. I don't really care too much about having it connected to my router, as I can connect to my computers through my network so thats not a big deal for me. I do run a plex server off my main desktop and one of my docked drives. Looking for a nicer set up, not sure if this is the one I want... but it seems like a good start. Faster transfer speeds wouldn't make a difference connected to the router vs usb to the computer I wouldn't think, im guessing it depends on the connection and speed of the drives? Is there anything else you might reccommend to look for around the same price range? Gotta do some homework on RAIDS.. i know a little but not enough to where I am comfortable with it yet.

Nice vid. I enjoy your excellent channel, wish you great success, man 👍. A few droppings of free advice below; kindly take it whichever way you want in your discretion: ► (1) If you put one of these enclosures into production (i.e. deployed to your hardware stack), then be sure to own and store an identical second one. When any single component on the first one dies or burns out, you will need the second unit for a non-gory recovery and prompt continuity. For example, good luck quickly finding a la carte an off-the-shelf power supply PSU that looks like that one. Or a replica of the proprietary internal RAID card running the same. With a second unit, one can restore by either . . . . . (i) just moving the drives (preferred route; but test this out in advance; it is good that one can test this in advance); or . . . . . (ii) keep the drives in place in Unit A then scavenge necessary replacement hardware components from Unit B to Unit A with soldering, wiring, drilling, hot-gluing, hammering and screwing your way to the promised land (less preferred; not easily testable without guaranteeing non-destruction on Units A or B). ► (2) 2:51 In general about hardware versus software raid . . . All hardware Raid suffers this problem of 'vendor lock.' Cordially advise to explore software alternatives like ZFS. Along those lines, cordially advise to downgrade from a Raid-based enclosure to a cardless JBOD box, which . . . . . (i) if such JBOD is USB, then simple; or . . . . . (ii) alternatively which if such is SAS/SATA, then add and enable a HBA card to your file-serving 'puter. ► (3) 2:37 Cordially advise covering the red/white Raid switches with black tape so no one messes with them accidentally or otherwise. To repeat ►(1) above, cordially advise to requisition a 2nd duplicate RAID card (and maybe triplicate, too). Cordially cannot stress that enough. Meanwhile, take very, very good care of the proprietary Raid controller inside the enclosure; keep the fan on high and keep the h/w Raid's caps and Vrms as cool as you can for their longevity. Kindest regards, neighbors.
