Considering the Unit selection I’m kinda surprised Pat would ever want to orienteer for recreation
@DataGeek9032 жыл бұрын
It's often the other way around. The reason few ppl make it is cos they see rucking /orienteering as a hard chore. The guys who make it do this shit for recreation Look at Ed Bugarin. At 60+ years he could outruck most of the guys who just passed unit selection cos he does that shit for fun.

"The devil's in the details." "This looks like a clearing on the map but this is new growth. Tree's aren't ten years old." The details always matter. I would've missed that.

Don't need a map. When you're as great as I am you're always right where you're supposed to be. 🤣

If you live in a relatively flat environment; try to augment USGS maps if available. Local GIS departments or soil and water conservation districts in my area have the ability to make 2ft contour interval maps on fairly recent aerial imagery. If they are good with GIS they can make them 1:24000 and project them the same as the USGS maps.

As a maritime intelligence squad lead, I so fucking hate this part of leading. This brought back some very annoying memories lol. Easy to keep cool when you dont have your DI/DS or equivalents staring down at you and waiting for results. And youre gonna be pushing if you do or say something stupid of course. Nothing beats 20 push-ups in 4 am in the middle of the coldest and darkest winter night in the woods in full winter gear Its so hard keeping track where you are, especially in a place like Finland's forests. After 2 nights of no sleep, little food and being really cold in January, its time to plot the next patrol! Bring out the map, bring out the tools.. I really feel it for Cpt Sobel in Band of Brothers when he is utterly lost and the squad is staring down at a sheep farm Though thankfully my war-time mission will put me and my squad on some God-forsaken rock in the Baltic Sea, so getting lost in the wilderness is not really a thing. Just sit tight and wait for the anti-rad missiles to rain down upon us. Though if Russia's shortcomings in Ukraine have taught us anything, I think we will be fine.

Depending on your county; contact Your GIS department or if they don’t have one your local soil and water conservation district. They usually have decent mapping capabilities

This is one skill my sons and i would slay at. Elk hunting the west makes what they are doing childs play. That ‘thick’ brush he was talking about!!! Haha. Right. Come orienteer with us Pat and you would think the amazon was open. Good stuff though.
