I don’t know how many people come back to this series. I’ve always loved it and it’s beautiful story, I rewatched it so many times. I even watched this whole series with my mother, who also fell in love with the game. So many years later, my mother has passed away and this game has become a bittersweet memory. But I won’t forget how we laughed and cried together watching these videos late at night. So thanks for some beautiful memories.

I remember the first time I attempted to watch this series. I only made it to 3 and a half minutes before I got bored. Then, when I saw the 6 million subscriber dedication with the song "Everything's Alright" and I heard how pretty the game was, I came back after a long time had passed since I attempted to watch the series and tried again. This game made me laugh, cry, think, feel, and love. I now beg every single one of my friends to watch the playthrough of this game and am trying to teach myself how to play the piano so I can learn to play "For River"

Yes its a reference from a story. :3 About a king who gets fooled by two "merchants" saying they can make the most unique fabric to make an outfit for the king that will make him look even more like a king. But the fabric can't be seen by anyone who is stupid. But There was no fabric at all. The king sent a few people to go see the fabric but each person he sent couldn't see the fabric. They didn't want to get in trouble with the king or be known as stupid so they lied and said they did see the fabric. In the end the King himself didn't see the fabric but he too lied and said he saw the fabric. He didn't want anyone to think that him, the King, is stupid. On the day of a parade I think for the King he went out naked. A child had to say that there was no fabric for everyone to see that the merchants were liars. (it was a book I had that was full of a lot of fairy tales. My favorite as a child was The Match Girl. Granted it was a sad story It was my favorite because of the way she went with her grandmother to heaven.)

I remember staying up late one night, three years ago, and experiencing this series for the first time, like I was actually there. I remember crying with markiplier at the final moments of the series. I remember the good times of when I used to see lots of videos like this, watching through this video. I haven’t even seen what markiplier makes currently, but I don’t doubt that I’ll like it too. But I have memories (haha, that’s kind of a major plot point of this game) attached to these videos. Every year or two I get the urge to watch it, hoping I can feel the same things I did on my first watch through. But I wind up disappointing myself when I instead cry because it doesn’t feel like that first watch through, and I know most people forgot this video and this game. And I can’t interact with everyone else like I once did. Truth is I miss it, but I can never restore that place in my heart that these videos filled now that it’s gone again. I hope, to anyone who may be watching this for their first time, that you enjoy this just as much as I did, and that you build fond memories of it like I did. I just look at anything nostalgic like this, and instead of feeling happy and reminiscent, I feel sad. I feel like a part of me has gone. I hope none of you have this feeling on your rewatches. And to markiplier, continue making great videos! Your videos always made me happy!

Keep that head up man. You can’t put a value on such good memories: all of it is invaluable; I love this stuff. I turn on old markiplier to sleep. Everyone has forgotten about this. But I won’t. And you know what. As long as the memory always remains in my head. It’s more than enough. I look back and do smile because I remember the feeling I had. Of course I can’t capture that same feeling. But I can remember being happy and that’s all that matters. Because if you can be happy once, you can be happy again. Idk if ur even active still. But I miss all of that too man. I miss when this first came out and I was so young and I watched this and felt every ounce of emotion. It’s nowhere near the same now. But in the end. I lived it. and that’s awesome. Knowing that I did experience something so great and blissful, it makes me have hope for the future somehow.

--- Aint Watched it --- I have to agree with some of the people here. If Mark goes slow, and gets the story, this will be a great play through. But thats not his style, hes very high energy, and this is a very slow and casual game with great story. But, benefit of the doubt, i haven't watched it yet --- Watched it --- For those of you with doubts, dont have em. Mark gets that this game is a serious one, with some funny moments, and he doesnt try to make jokes out off a serious moment. Hes still the high energy goofball we love, but he does know when to turn it down. Glad he chose to play this game

Markiplier Hey Mark. The story named The Emperors New Clothes is actually written by a famous Danish author and composer named Hans Christian Andersen or H.C Andersen for short. There are actually various sculptures of some of his paper art clippings in bigger cities and there even is a statue of himself and other sculptures based on characters like The Onelegged Tin Soldier. Even his home has become a small attraction to visit if you ever get to Denmark.

Hey Mark headcrab guy from Comic Con here, I have to tell you Mark that you better have some tissues ready on hand. Because this game is going to make you cry, unlike the horror one that made you cry out of sadness and fear, this game is going to make you cry of sadness and melancholy joy. It's going to be one of those games, one of those games that are so sad yet so beautiful. For me it actually made me question what I could have done differently in my life, yeah I am not kidding this game actually made me think about what I have done with my life. The Emperor's new clothes by Hans Christian Anderson is a short tale about an emperor who is an arrogant and vain man who cares about nothing but wearing fine clothes. He hires two men who he believed were tailors but were actually swindlers, he commissioned them to make him the finest robes in the kingdom. They pretended to make the robes, but there were no robes he was naked. His ministers couldn't see the clothes but they didn't tell him about the falsehood for fear of being reprimanded, the townspeople played along for that same reason. The lone child was the only one to reveal the falsehood, leaving the arrogant king to be embarrassed because he had been made a fool and was naked in front of the whole town.

I mostly just meant that its kind of one of those stories *every* child practically hears; it just surprised me that there was someone who hadn't. :/ It wasn't meant to be taken as some great failing that you and Mark had never heard of the story so the sarcasm was a little unnecessary. The wiki will probably explain it in detail and quite a bit better but the basic story goes that there was an emperor who was very clothes conscious and constantly had his royal tailor make him a new outfit every day. One day, the tailor, tired of this and out of ideas, came up with the idea to tell the Emperor that he made him an outfit out of the finest, most wonderful fabric.. and then proceeded to present him with a bare mannequin. At first the emperor was confused and said,"But there is nothing there." The tailor told him,"There is, though, sire. Look closely and you'll see it." So the emperor did and he "saw" his wonderful new clothes. He "put them on" and went on to march through his subjects. In reality, the emperor was really naked but the subjects, afraid to point this out, went along with the idea that he was wearing the most wonderful new clothes. The illusion was broken by a young man in the crowd who cried out,"But... he's not wearing anything!" And of course everyone, the emperor included, realized it to be so, if I remember correctly. If I had to hazard a guess from the fact that the game referenced this story, something similar will happen over the course of the game that will disillusion the illusion that the main characters are trying to build up for Johnny. Its a nice touch of foreshadowing for the game itself and the allusion is appreciated. :) I also like how he makes all these origami rabbits and wants to go to the moon; the Japanese believe there is a rabbit in the moon who makes mochi.

Markiplier That is a reference to the classic tale of The emperor's new clothes. Its about an emperor who is tricked by two weavers into going out and addressing his public naked. The weavers tricked him by telling him that the fabric used on the new robe they made for him can only be seen by those who are smart enough. The emperor not wanting to feel dumb pretends to see the robe and wears it. The passage picks up where i left off. It's all so was referenced by Disney with the Emperor's new groove movies.

You should keep watching. When there's a very emotional part in the game or just a very special part mark actually takes it seriously, and often times he stops talking if something really interesting or emotional happens. So yeah, I'd say keep watching. But it's your choice

This is the year 2019, time has passed since Mark did this series, even more since the game was released. I'm a grown up, an adult now, but still this game messes with my emotions. It reminds me what's really important in life, friendship and love! The story where someone tries to make someone else's dream come true in their last moments of life, it's a soul tearing, mind shattering, breathtaking story. I'm really glad I came back to watch this series. Thank you Kan "Reives" Gao for this game, thank you Mark for the series.

Ooh, yes, I remember watching a Let's Play of this game before. The last time I watched it I made a mistake of not having a box of tissues with me to cry into, I will not make the mistake this time. Even the intro song made me tear up, it's easily one of the most beautiful soundtracks in a video game, especially when we find out the significance behind it. This game is beautiful, and really, really sad. I'm happy to see Mark playing it.

15:30 It's a reference I believe to a Spanish story from a collection called "Conde Lucanor" (Count Lucanor) from Don Juan Manuel. In one of the selections Lucanor tells his advisor, Patronio, that someone has come to him and told him that they have a secret to tell him, but he must not tell anyone when he hears it. So Patronio tells Lucanor a story about a King and three knaves. The three knaves told the King that they could weave a wonderful fabric. It could only be seen by people who people who were their alleged father's legitimate child, so if you were adopted or your mother had you with someone you did not know about, you could not see it. They "made" this fabric for the King (they never made any fabric) in a locked room and when it was complete, he "wore" it, but could not see it. Afraid of losing his kingdom, he lied and said he saw it. Everyone else was afraid of admitting that they could not see it, so everyone complimented him on it (BTW this means he walked around nude, hence the reference ^). In the story, a poor man told him that he could not see the King's cloak and then everyone else admitted it, but the three men had already robbed the King and left. Hope this helps / someone enjoys the random knowledge I learned in AP Spanish class!

"The Emperor's New Clothes" was a real-life short story about an emperor who was scammed into paying two con artists to make him a robe from "the finest silk" that could only be perceived by highly intelligent persons. They presented absolute nothingness to him, and when he didn't see a robe, he pretended to be able to see it as to not look foolish. Then he showed the whole kingdom his robe, and they all pretended to see one too. In layman' terms: Some guys told a king they could make him clothes that you could only see if you were smart. They lied and he went up on stage completely naked in front of the whole kingdom.

Oh, The Emperor's New Clothes. I remember hearing about that as a kid. It's an old fable about an Emperor who's swindled into buying 'clothes' which only the wisest, richest and most powerful can see. In reality, there are no clothes but the Emperor is afraid to admit he can't see them, so he walks into the street in nothing but his skin. Nobody will say anything for fear of embarrassing him and being punished until a little kid laughs and says "The Emperor is naked!" He was the only honest person.

The Emperors News Clothes is by Hans Christian Anderson who also wrote The Little Mermaid, Thumberlina and Snow Queen (which is what Frozen is based off). It's about an Emperor who hires two swindlers who promise to design him the finest clothes that can only be seen by those who are not stupid or incompetent. Obviously they just pretend they've made him invisible clothes, and the emperor proceeds to wear the "invisible clothes" despite the fact a child points out he is in fact not wearing anything, revealing the irony that the emperor would rather pretend to be wearing fine clothes than admit to being tricked. This was also adapted by Disney into The Emperors New Groove....sorry I'm a nerd.
