In modern usage, the word "origami" is used as an umbrella term for all folding practices, regardless of the culture of origin. The goal is to turn a flat, square sheet of paper into a finished sculpture using folding and sculpting techniques. Modern origami practitioners generally advise against the use of incisions, glue, or marking on the paper. Origami folders often use the Japanese word kirigami to refer to designs that use cuts, although the cut is more specific to Chinese paper products.
