Thanks for this informative demo with stunning playing at the start! It seems that the impulse response wave is growing so this will be very useful to many guitarists, no doubt. Loved the clean(ish) tone at 11:30 and the driven tone at 22:35. I'll be watching this back a few times to learn some of those licks in the beginning solo, too!

Origin Effects Hi guys. Thinking of ordering one of these to use direct with IRs. Would the extra features of the custom still be useful in this scenario? Cheers!

I think if you have the means to acquire a Revival Drive with the extra features, it would give you even more ability to custom shape your tone.

Hi, Nathan. Technically, the PWR AMP setting should work fine for use with I.R.s, however, as Shawn said, the Custom does provide you with more flexibility for shaping the EQ if needed.

Thanks for this nice in depth vid and thanks to Simon of Origin Effects GB for reinventing the wheel.

A favorite aspect of Tubbs’ style is his vibrato - really is expressive and refreshing. Fabulous technique yet used primarily in support of expression, rather than to impress. Indeed so refreshing to be about the music as opposed to being about ego.

Stunning playing as always Shawn! Great demo of that particular application for the Revival Drive. Sadly, for all the demos that have been done for the Revival Drive, the only thing I haven't seen demonstrated is how it might work in MY application, that is to say into a low wattage Voxy amp on the edge of clipping. Maybe it's not ideal for that application.

Very useful and helpful video; many of the other demos of this pedal don't show it being used for mildly overdriven sounds, or the sound of a clean Fender style amp cranked up loud - the section around 11 mins onwards was great for this. I was really surprised by the Fendery sounds which seemed to capture the thing that people buy attenuators for. To me, that's much more interesting than the extreme driven sounds which you can get something like with many cheaper pedals. I think I'd find it irresistible if Origin Effects did the "Silicon only" version that people are suggesting in the comments. I have a 68 Custom Deluxe Reverb, which is great, but most of the time I can't turn it up loud enough to get THAT sound - it's fine at gigs, but at home I'm always fiddling with pedals to get something approaching the sound. Also, speaking as an old fogey of 66 years, I can imagine that at some point in the future the idea of taking a pedal like that with a pedal power amp to a gig will get more appealing by comparison with lugging an amp around.

Great demo again Shawn. Question: Did you, or would you use the power amp emulation on the Two Notes? Also, do you think this would improve the tone of a small/micro practice amp? Or would the physical nature of such an amp override the tone? (example amp: Blackstar FLY amp.)

Shawn are you going to do a demo with this plugged straight into an amp? Again, I use high gain pups and have to use it with a crunchy amp. Or for me it’s not high gain enough. I guess that’s a 68 plexi sound. Great pedal. I actually would prefer a more spongey feeling. Still brilliant pedal.

If I were to run the Revival Drive as a preamp for an ampless pedalboard rig, could I run it into a delay, then reverb, and then cabsim to board? In essence, placing the delay and reverb post preamp is like running a delay and reverb in the effects loop of an amp. This is my biggest concern with preamps that don’t have an effects loop because I haven’t been able to find a good enough answer for this.
@ShawnTubbs

Yes, so long as you run the delay and verb post preamp into something like a cab m or something along those lines, it should sound fine.

BTW, if the rear Ghost switches act for two different frequencies, it sounds like it may be to add a bit of mains hum? 50 Hz is UK/European mains line frequency, and 60Hz is US, So, not sure quite what is going on with that switch!
@ShawnTubbs
@ShawnTubbs 6 жыл бұрын
You are correct about the UK and US electrical frequencies. The ghost control doesn't add 50 or 60 cycle mains hum per say. It's really designed to emulate what is happening in the power section of say an old fully-cranked blackface twin or maybe an early 50 watt Marshall Plexi. It creates a ghosting or double tones type of effect. The 60Hz setting and 50Hz setting is there to subtly alter the pitch of the ghosting effect. Keep in mind that the Ghost control also has an effect on how quickly the "amp sag" effect occurs. If you have it all the way counter-clockwise the effect is more immediate. As you turn the control clockwise the "sag effect" is less immediate.
@timbeaton5045
@timbeaton5045 6 жыл бұрын
Just had a look at the manual, and i think we are both right, here. My reading was that in an amp (any amp!) if you really pull current out of the PSU smoothing capacitors, they start to run out of charge, and so a small amount of rectifier ripple starts to appear on the power amp rails. According to their manual, they say the Ghost circuit "models" a reduction in the capacitance of the smoothing caps, thus introducing mains frequency related frequencies that modulate the guitar signal. This couples with the sag modelling and relates to the mode of rectifier being "imitated" These frequencies are not harmonically related to the guitar notes, of course! I know i have heard this effect in not very well looked after amps in the past, and i guess this is Origin adding a level of realism that nobody else does. Clever people. And great review, as ever, Sir!

Hey Mark ... just to let you know ... We did a lesson on some of Shawns stuff a while back on our youTube channel ... just check out our channel and you can grab the transcription/tab for that lesson. Also papastache102 did an really good interview with Shawn where he breaks down some of his moving around the fretboard and using chromatic movements. And finally ... check out our channel GuitarBreakdown for some Scott Henderson, Allen Hinds, Guthrie Govan and Michael Landau to name a few ... they crawl the fretboard with a lot of very musical chromatic movement as well. Shawn is amazing! We've transcribed a bunch of his stuff and have several more lesson breakdowns coming in the near future. Hope this helps give ya some ideas.
@timbeaton5045
@timbeaton5045 6 жыл бұрын
Interesting, this. I too love his chromaticisms, and i have been experimenting with such ideas, myself, although i'm not a particularly good guitar player. One thing i do though, and somewhat unlike most guitarists i see, is to use 4 fingers on strings. Probably comes from learning the violin at a young age, where the strings are in 5ths. so requiring 4 fingers to get up/down to the next string. So many players just seems use 3 fingers, which seems to lead to over reliance on pentatonic motifs. Unusually, it looks like Shawn, even though he mainly uses 3 fingers, avoids this trap, and with style. Watch Alan Holdsworth, and you'll see what i mean. IF you can follow what he did. Which most of the time i cannot!
