Origin Maine American Bison Boot

It takes a lot to surprise me after so many boot reviews. Most boots are based on a popular silhouette then tweaked: Moc toes, service boots, loggers, they all are popular for a reason. The Origin Maine American Bison Boot has me scratching my head though. Part work boot, part hiker, part athletic shoe, it seems to take inspiration from many different places. It's refreshing to see a truly unique model like this, and it really does a lot of things well which is no easy task! Most importantly though is that this boot (like all Origin products) is made here in the USA with 100% domestic components. The dream child of one man who decided the status quo simply isn't good enough.

Reviews of clothing, boots, and accessories for men, along with style advice and life philosophy. I've been working with my hands for my entire life as a mechanic, tow truck driver, and eventually a licensed electrician. Being a blue collar guy, I look for certain elements in a product: is it durable? Is it high-quality? Will it perform well over its service life? Whether boots, pants, jackets, or tools I believe it's best to buy once and cry once by getting the best you can afford. With so many options these days, choosing the best product can become a difficult decision, but that's where I come in. Helping you stay stylish, rugged, and handsome.
I don't care where it's made as long as it's made well, and allows you to buy less and buy better.

I sold all kinds of boots through a mountaineering store in Western Colorado for 15 years and then sold that business and opened a footwear specific store which I owned and ran for another 16 years. What caught my eye here and made me watch the video was the bison leather, the heel counter design and the sole. Tanning bison hide is not the same as cow hide. A now defunct company called H. S. Trask got into it in the early 2000's. Figuring out how to stabilize bison was their biggest problem because it tends to stretch out of shape easily. Only time will tell if the boots here are successful in that regard. As for the heel counters, imagine the direction of travel of your shoes when you walk. Having a counter that laps such that the piece of leather used for the counter is exposed to sticks and rocks coming at it in a manner that such things can wedge up under the leather and/or the stitches as you stride forward is a formula for premature wear and stitch failure. And lastly, ripple soles do add a bit of cushioning to the boot by the inherent design but ripple soles hold mud like no other sole made and most of the time that mud has to be removed using a tool of some sort (at the very least a stick). If you are an urban type this may not matter much as you live in a paved environment but if you get into mud plan on having some work to do. I would opt for another sole type per what the guy in the video said was available. Aesthetically they DO look nice though, if appearance is your top priority.

Boots look great, love the fact that they are 100% American made with America components (I personally will not send another dime to any boot company that makes their boots in Mexico, Brazil, China, or anywhere else where I believe the primary impetus is to increase profit margins. But my main issue here is the Poron mid. Please please, bootmakers everywhere - use leather. Real leather. Don't cut corners. If I wanted to buy a sneaker, I'd buy a sneaker. Use leather - and please bring back the shoe industry to the United States!!

First, great review. I'm glad you hit so many points on the boot that can't really be seen from pictures on a website. Second, yes please do more on origin and take them up on that tour offer. I've been a big fan of this company for a long time, coming at it originally from the view of a BJJ practicioner looking for someone to make gear with a fresh outlook. The owner Pete and his business partner Jocko are some very dynamic individuals and their business ethos is on point.

I love the upper. I just won’t seriously consider buying until they either: 1) Goodyear welt (please do this Origin!) OR 2) Offer another solid resole option. I’m not really buying the “built for life” aspect of this boot if it’s not Goodyear welted/able to be resoled by most cobblers.

Just to clarify, there is a ton of sewing capacity at almost any level of production here, my company will do anything from a single sample to about 5000 pieces and we are tiny, but companies will put margin ahead of all else and everybody has to hit their price point. Obviously Carhartt couldn’t go 100% US as you said, but they get enough halo effect from having some US made stuff that they can still import the rest and get better margins or more competitive prices, while still maintaining the heritage image. Everybody wants to support US made, but most people don’t want to pay for it

This is a combination welt which is stitchdown in front and almost a blake/bologna stitch in back. They can be resoled since the cobbler would remove the front stitching and then work from inside the boot at the heel. I agree, it's a pretty unique look and one I haven't seen before!

I’ve been working on something special. Livestream this Friday and new episodes beginning the week after! I’ll make it worth the wait, I promise.

I’m not a fan of the soles, but I appreciate the video. Really like that wool shirt you’re wearing though!
