Hi Ms. KARA, I'm from El NIDO . Share ko lang din. Ang El Nido ay isang Spanish Word na ang katumbas nito sa Ingles ay "The Nest". Dito mo kasi makikita ang napakaraming pugad ng Balinsasayaw, isang uri ng ibon na ang saliva nito ay sobrang mahal bilhin(ginagamit din itong sangkap sa paggawa ng mga de kalidad na gatas). Balinsasayaw Festival rin ang aming ipinagdiriwang tuwing Foundation Day. . Char. Share ko lang Ms Kara. ❤. Hehe

My Province is Agusan del Norte, Agusan came from the word “Agas/Agasan” which means to flow or flows of water in the river. The river that I’m talking about is one of the longest river (3rd longest river) in the Ph the Agusan River. The said river flows from the northern part of Agusan to the southern part, thus naming our neighboring province Agusan del Sur.

Agreed!

Hi Ms. Kara, I also wanted to share the meaning behind my hometown’s name Cotabato. Cotabato was named after a Cave, and that cave is said to be to the hide-out of all the soldiers here in Cotabato during the world war II, and it is also said that the Kutawato Cave served as the sanctuary for the natives here when the spaniards tried to invade and convert all of the natives to Catholicism hence its name Cotabato (Kutang Bato or Stone Fort)…

I love this kind of topics, dito sa Binangonan it is said to be the "first town along the lake" hence the name. According to my lolo there was a lengend that the site was named because entities such as spirits and nymphs resides in this area. its strange rocky biome full of bamboo was bizarre to a lot of outside the community, and people speculate that the rocks here are alive kaya you'll often hear the word "batong buhay". My speculation is it was called that way because there was another legend here that rocks from the bottom of the lake "rose" to form a bridge constructed by some entity but discontinued connecting the mainland to the island hence the name binangonan.

I'm from Cebu and I read a book (I forgot what's it's called) about the origin of how the city of Parañaque was named. It was about a Kastila who rode a Kalesa. When he wanted to be dropped off, he told the Filipino Kalesa driver "Para que". He keeps saying "Para que" but the driver don't understand him. This is how that certain Kastila come up with the name of Parañaque City because of his experience with that driver

Bacoor was named after the word "bakod". Nung dumating ang mga Kastila sa Bacoor, may nakita silang mga katutubo na naglalagay ng bakod. Tinanong nila kung anong pangalan ng lugar, at dahil hindi sila naiintindihan ng mga katutubo, inakala nila na ang tinatanong ay kung ano ang ginagawa nila. Kaya "bakod" ang sagot nila. Then they named the town Bakood, which became Bacoor. We still celebrate Bakood Festival nowadays. Also, some of the brgys here in Bacoor are named after the trees/food that were abundant here like Mabolo, Talaba, Niog, Sineguelasan.

Maraming salamat po Kara! Taga Australyano ako, ngunit asawa kong Higaonon na, taga Bukidnon. Ang tribu Higaonon "Ang Mga Tao ng Buhing na Bundok" na. Nakatira kami sa Cagayan de Oro. Sa Bisaya "Kagay" ay tulad ng "Kayumangging niyog" sa Tagalog.

CAGAYAN is pronounced KAGAY-AN.. which probably came from KAGAYHAAN..something to be ashamed of.. ILIGAN ay galing daw sa ILIHAN..yung fortification.. HIGAONON.. ay parang galing sa GAON na meaning 'umalpas/umalis sa tubig o tabing dagat.'

@@neilsumanda1538 Tama na! I have heard the story of the datu on one side of the Cagayan de Oro River who was at war with the tribe on the other side, and he was ashamed when his son fell in love with the daughter of the opposing datu, married her, and ended the war. The warriors of the ashamed datu were angry and went up to the area that nowadays is Lumbia and Baungon. I have lived in Lumbia, and my wife was born in Baungon. Yes, I know how to pronounce "Kagay-an", and I love the city! "Higa" in Binukid means "mountain", so you could also read "Higaonon" as meaning "the people who left the water/sea for the mountain". What is interesting is that because my wife lives in Cagayan de Oro, and not in Bukidnon, she is known as "Badjao Higaonon". She is not ethnically Badjao, but the term here refers to the fact that she lives on the coast and not in the mountains! It's interesting that there are often many possible reasons for a place name. The one you mentioned for Kagay-an is the most romantic of them. I have also seen a translation of "Cagayan" as simply meaning a river valley. Of course, there is Cagayan in the north of Luzon. When you think about it, there are so many languages in the Philippines that many interpretations are possible.

Hi Ms. Kara, I like this topic, and also all your documentaries sa GMA7. Kaso lang may na-miss ka yata, lalo't tungkol sa pinagmulan ng mga pangalan ng mga lugar sa Pilipinas. Alam mo ba na ang Cagayan Valley at Cagayan de Oro ay nagsimula sa salitang "cagayan" na ang ibig sabihin ay ilog o River? Cagayan River ang pinakamahabang ilog sa buong Pilinas kaya tinawag itong Cagayan Valley ( River Valley) at ang Cagayan de Oro naman ay "River of Gold". And also Laguna came from the word "laguna" which means? (you guessed it right) "lagoon". I was born in Cagayan Valley, grew up in Laguna, and my lady is from Cagayan de Oro. 😊😊😊

I'm from the North. I would like to make two minor corrections. (1) Pangasinan is from the pangasinense term "panag-asinan", where the prefix is "panag-" not "pang-". You need to understand the prefix "panag-" which is not present in Tagalog. You may have encountered the "panag-" in the Baguio festival "panagbenga" which means pamumulaklak from the Kankanaey root word "benga" meaning flower (compare with Malay bunga also meaning flower). Similarly "panag-asin" means "pangangasin" or the making of salt, so the place is "Panag-asinan" where saltmaking is done. (2) The Ibaloy term for moss is "bag-iw" with a dash not "bagiw", but that's understandable. It is not entirely accurate to say "maraming naniniwala na ang Baguio ay galing sa Bagiw", kasi it is not just a belief, for in fact, in the Ibaloy language, they actually still call the place "Bag-iw" up to today. A person from Baguio is called an ibag-iw in Ibaloy. Here is the interesting thing: In Spanish orthography, if you spell "bag-iw", it becomes "baguio" (pronounced /bagiw/) because they have no "w" and commonly use an "o" instead, but since "baguio" can be pronounced as either "bagiw" or "bagiyo", it has been mispronounced over the decades and almost all lowlanders now pronounce it /ba-gi-yo/ instead of /bag-iw/. I am currently living in Baguio but my father is from Pangasinan.
