The oversized opening in the crossguard is fascinating! Imagine the negative review that would be left if someone found that on a sword made today! I'm a little confused by the weight. 2 pounds 79 ounces? Isn't 79 ounces is 4.9 pounds?

1133 grams is just under 2.5 pounds, so I'm guessing it is 2 lbs, 7.9 ounces - and the decimal point was missed

Yeah, I guess so. I use an only unit converter but have no idea about ounces at all. I guess I will stick with good true metric to avoid confusion!

I never gave much about that. I wondered why people do as much as they do when i first encountered such a critique. Theres much more important details to look for in a sword, like proper overall form, complexity in shaping of the elements (like the pommel form discussed here), proper for the type distal taper, mass distribution etc etc.

Imagine what the person throwing this sword was thinking. They had no knowledge of the periodic table, and we likely know more about the ancient world than this sword thrower. I can only imagine what thoughts they had as they threw this sword into the river.

Makes me wonder if the guard, pommel and Blade were made in different workshops. You would think if it was more specialized labor in the same place the fit would be better because each only worker has to get good at making a component instead of a whole item.

Or, we do not fully understand historical sword assembly. I suspect that prefab parts intentionally left a margin for making customized hilts, with ergonomics optimized for an individual sword-fighter. I have seen shims on a number of original swords, and they would be a good way of fine tuning the exact placement of hilt components.

Very cool! You mentioned that the guard and pommel were probably made by specialists and mass produced, were there specialists for every part of the sword, such as blade smith, scabbard maker, sharpener etc? I know in Japanese sword production there were and are to this day specialists who make each part of the sword, maybe this happened in Europe as well.

This certainly was the case in Europe, too.

There is a video on YT: "The viking sword - what it was and what it was not", a lecture by Peter Johnsson. He describes exactly the same and is going into detail by describing a medieval forge in an abbey in france with a water-driven (power)hammer. Production and trade (at least with swords) didn't seem to differ that much from todays mechanisms of capitalism. ; )
