After not getting into the "Tonight Show" with new host Johnny Carson, (taped at 8 p.m.),we were successful in seeing "The Price is Right!" with Bill Cullen, who was most entertaining & he told stories about his being a pilot! It was a great night & totally free! R.I.P. Bill!

Bill Cullen was a pioneer in game show hosting. We grew up watching him on Price Is Right. We also saw Art Fleming host a new show called Jeopardy which ran for years. Both Bill & Art didn't try to crowd their game shows with their personalities if you know what I mean. If anyone remembers the game show "Video Village", you saw the future host of a new game show called "Let's Make A Deal", Monte Hall. One more game show host that I will never forget was Jim Lange who hosted the Dating Game. Gene Rayburn hosted The Match Game. Alan Ludden hosted Password. Dick Clark hosted $10,000 Pyramid. And not so far long ago, Steve Allen's old side kick of the Tonight Show, Regis Philbin, hosted "Who Want's to be a Millionaire".

For a channel that calls itself "Facts Verse", you seem to play very fast and loose with "facts": - original Price is Right premiered on NBC, NOT CBS - Cullen filled in for Allen Ludden on Password Plus while Ludden was being treated for stomach cancer. Ludden returned briefly but when the illness returned, he was replaced by Tom Kennedy, as by that time Cullen was hosting Chain Reaction on the same network and thus unavailable - Cullen never HOSTED Match Game or Tattletales, although he appeared on both as a panelist - it's also a big omission to not mention his work on To Tell the Truth in the 70s, including his brief stint as host while Garry Moore was treated for throat cancer. Cullen was also considered to replace Moore when he retired, but producers didn't want to break up the chemistry with the other panelists, so the gig went to Joe Garigiola - lastly, you fail to mention how Cullen became a "go to" host particularly for Bob Stewart, who created Price and Password before striking out on his own. Often a new show would seek to find a host "like Bill Cullen"... only to end up actually hiring Cullen for the gig All these facts are readily available through a variety of sources...do the research if you want to call yourself "Facts Verse"
@TheTVsnob2 жыл бұрын
Also, failed to mention, "I've Got a Secret", on which Cullen was a regular panelist from 1952 to 1967. For most of its run, IGaS was live, as was, "The Price is Right". So, Cullen hosted a live morning radio show M-F 6am-10am, had a cab waiting to take him to the Hudson Theatre for the daytime, "Price", and on Wednesday (starting in 1961, Monday) nights, over to CBS Studio 59/52 (later Disco Studio 54), for the live telecast of IGaS at 9:30 or 10:30. On Wednesdays, Bill had a really full day, with the primetime, "Price" airing live at 8:30 from the color-equipped Colonial Theatre, and racing 16 blocks to make the live IGAS show. There were no rehearsals for daytime TPiR for Bill, as the show had a stand-in for daily rehearsals, who provided Bill with notes. "Price" producer, Bob Stewart allegedly said, "I would rather have an unrehearsed Bill Cullen, than any other host WITH rehearsals."

I have several bones to pick with video. First of all, Bill Cullen NEVER hosted Match Game, that was Gene Rayburn. Second, Bill didn't host Password until it became Password Plus when he filled in for Allen Ludden who was in the hospital at the time and that was only for a month. Geoff Edwards guest hosted Bill's show at the time, Chain Reaction. Third, the original Price Is Right was cancelled in 1965 because of falling ratings. Also, Bill never hosted a syndicated version of The Price Is Right. It was always daytime and nighttime on the networks. Bill couldn't have hosted the current Price Is Right anyway, because it was totally different from the original show with its bigger stage, etc. Bill also hosted 23 different game shows.
@TheTVsnob2 жыл бұрын
Bill couldn't host the CBS revival of, "The Price is Right", not because of the stage size (Mark Goodson could have staged the show to accommodate Bill), but because Bill was already hosting, "Three on a Match" on NBC, which would run another 18 months after "TPIR" premiered on CBS. NBC would not allow Bill to host another show on a competing network. You are correct on all other counts, and Facts Verse needs to check its FACTS, before posting videos.
