Fun fact - “Nitro” was the code name for the DS, just like “Dolphin” was for the GameCube. This is why NTR is written on your game carts!

Blast from the past! Thx, this brings up lots of memories. 15 years ago we had these at our university. Was my first console/dev kit that i coded for. Later on the PS3 and the PSP. Sadly we never got any other Nintendo dev kits.

Nintendo actually gave out dev kits to university's back then? I'm surprised given their stance on indie developers back then. My university professor wanted to get a Wii U or 3DS dev kit for his classes but Nintendo wouldn't let him. We ended using an Xbox One and in later classes a GBA with a flash cart to teach us C and ARM assembly.

Seeing how they were able to capture the footage of gameplay is astonishing! Mind-blowing it looked like exactly how the AV output aesthetic visuals gave it that old 2000 commercial feel. Thats probably exactly how they got those small clips of gameplay for the ad

I was wondering why this box seemed really familiar… and then I remembered that I’ve gotten to play some game on one of those! Like a forever ago as a child, on a cruise with my family I was randomly selected with my mom to test a game in developement! They told me the controls and let me play it, then they asked me for feedback and so on. Unfortunately I can’t for the life of me remember what the game was to be called, I don’t know if it ever got released or did well, but I remember it being a pretty fun, pretty colourful platformer-ish style game. They had the box plugged into a laptop, and now seeing this I assume it was to debug the game in real time. The game feels so hard to remember because at the time there were other stationary DS units on the cruise ship playground for children to play with, they had like Pac-Man and Pokémon games on them that I remember playing. What a weird nostalgia trip this provoked, thanks for uploading! I don’t know how common it was to take the developement unit on the go. Anyone got idea?

I'd say it's a bit of a legal grey area to say that even he owns this. It would probably be within their rights for Nintendo to request that it be returned to them. Developers pay for the right to utilise development hardware through a license, not buying the hardware itself. That being said, it's much better when they just let people keep a hold of these older console dev kits.

Climax were based in Brighton & Hove. I used to work down the road from them and sold them many, MANY "portable" 14" CRT televisions to attach to their dev kits. I visited them once to "install" them. At the time I was a proper fanboy of them as Moto GP for the original Xbox was getting a lot of people online to their new service. Fun facts: The woman who did the voiceovers introducing the tracks on Moto GP is called Penny, she was a PA for Climax at the time. As a some time local radio presenter, I offered my services but they declined! Also the only track on the game not to actually exist is called Sheridan as Climax were based at Sheridan House in Hove which is still there, although Climax have since moved out.

Just an FYI for people, magic erasers are great for cleaning certain surfaces that have tough marks on them but be aware that magic erasers are basically just a really fine grit sandpaper so it's actually sanding away at the marks you're cleaning off, so never use magic erasers on stuff like game catridge labels, stickers, shiny plastics and surfaces that have delicate paint or aren't meant to have a matte finish.

Tip for you sir. Fill the brittle post holes with CA glue and a small amount of baking soda mixed in. Once it dries take a drill bit the size of the diameter of the shaft of the screw ( the part that the threads spin around) and drill it out. Once that's done put the screws back like normal, they will cut new threads in the posts as you screw them in. Also if you want to cut it in its brittle state use a dremel with a metal cut off wheel or sanding drum, it will melt the plastic and not put the brittle plastic under stress. Hope that helps in the future.

This comment is on a year old video, but one tip for white cables that need cleaning... your favorite, IPA. I used to work on Apple displays, and the way we cleaned all the white cables was with little prepackaged medical alcohol prep pads! works absolute wonders

This Kit makes me nostalgic, I used to work with those a lot when I worked in Ubisoft between 2008 and 2012 before switching to Vita! I remember we had 2 type of Kits, one for Debug/Testing and another one for Capturing/"Burning" carts if I recall right And we had those DS carts but taller with 512 MB, some of them could Save, some not This brings me so many memories...

Beautiful machine, you made it like almost like new! The visually impaired (such as myself) would have loved one of those to see the DS on TV.

What causes some DSs to yellow and break down sooner than others? UV exposure?
