This 8th collection of original photos featuring British cars of the 1950s and 1960s contains some great images, all of which reflect the changing road transport scene here in Britain during those decades.
The 1950s began with fuel rationing and memories of the dark days of WW2 still very much in mind, and as the decade rolled along, increasing prosperity and optimism led to many cars becoming more colourful and cheery, often inspired by the car designs from across the pond in the USA.
This continued well into the 1960s although I think it's fair to say that designs became simpler and more box-like as the years rumbled by. Compare the Vauxhall Victors for example of the 1950s and those of the 1960s, the early cars were all fins and lashings of chrome, while the later cars were altogether more subdued. Fords (eg the Cortina) and the cars of BMC changed similarly, with much less ornamentation and glitz to be found on cars of the late 1960s when compared to those of just 10-15 years earlier.
Once again this collection of motoring images combines photos from my own collection with those sent in by visitors and followers of the Old Classic Car website and channel. My thanks to everyone that has dug out old photos for me to share in these uploads.
The cars and other vehicles featured were, in the main, just transportation tools to get from A to B in, few people thought that in decades to come we'd be preserving the few remaining examples that somehow survived into old age, becoming "classic cars" in the process.
