Your breakdown of the song and its lyrics is pretty spot on since the song pretty much represents Calli's state of mind having to deal with her sudden rise in popularity (her debut album had reached number 1 on itunes music store worldwide and in japan by the time of this song's release), her wondering if she really deserved all the fame and how much of it was for her as an individual and artist and how much of it was due to her being part of hololive itself and by extension how much of its was due to her colleagues popularity spilling over to her channel.
@ammonke63243 жыл бұрын
"These souls in my pocket are just sanity I borrow." Souls in this context is also a reference to Superchats/Donations she gets on stream, part of the whole character, reading superchats is sending souls off to the underworld, she is a Reaper after all. I take that line to mean something to the effect of how those little kindnesses and well-wishes were the only good thing she had going at that time.
@NotAGoodUsername3603 жыл бұрын
To add onto that, Calliope has made it pretty obvious that she's been relatively poor for a substantial amount of time and is deeply emotionally affected by the donations. Her first gaming stream got completely derailed after receiving a large number of $100+ donations in a row and had an emotional breakdown live. "Cursed Night" is her first song written and released after that incident, and the line about "These souls inside my pocket are just sanity I borrow" and "Finding someone so fucking wonderful when I'm just so me" both seem to be referring the emotional conflict that success has brought her.

She's gonna release some new original material this month, so that's something to look out for!
@tonyflorez11463 жыл бұрын
And that’s the last of her originals for now, she’s done 2 features with some of the more Jpop singers, Watame’s “cloudy sheep” and Kiara’s cover of “wah wah world” her voice is actually really interesting, singing in Japanese with an Austrian accent. Cali was supposed to release a remix this month but copyright issues, that being said it’s still coming out just under her old stage name. Now for the awkward topic of Vtuber identities, obviously part of the appeal is the mystery and anonymity, you don’t want to break the illusion of the character. There have been shitty situation with IRL stalkers and the like. Some are super protective about it, others are super open. Cali as a musician is obviously happy more eyes are on her work, she just wants to keep these 2 projects separate. That being said it would be pretty dope to see you react to some of her old work, just treat it like a new artist, because she’s not tied to a company she can go more in depth with emotional songs like this or even some raunchy comedy rap in the same vein as classic slim shady. I won’t say her name directly for obvious reasons, but it’s not some big secret, literally look at the “fans also like” section on mori’s Spotify page. (Not that people aren’t saying it in the comments anyway) Personal favs “sick outta fasion” “she-devil” “hazy skyscraper” “somewhere over the chem trails in the sky”

@thalli32213 жыл бұрын
@@JimRaynorRaider I think the comment was more concerned about Scru saying it in a potential video, which could cause a lot of negative comments and have unforeseen consequences. About the remix, Calli originally planned to release a song on her channel, but ran into some issues and they released the cover on Kiara's channel instead. So it's not 100% sure that it's a remix, but it's safe to assume so.

I'm stoked to see your reaction to this song, honestly my favorite song of hers. It feels like she wrote this from her heart.
@marinner06943 жыл бұрын
This song is like her mental state when she became a vtuber. She was ready to take the hate, to be hated by the people or even fail at been a vtuber. But the opposite happened, she was received with a lot of love an support from the deadbeats (her fans) and the song tells you how hard is for her to accept the kindness of the people (views, donations, comments). The line "drunk calliop" refers when she used to drink in every single stream to manage her anxiety on live stream, we are talking that she had like 20k people watching, superchat wars between usa and canada. During the song she kind of opens her heart to the people, that's why at the end she says "this time now look by yourself", kind of "this is the last time that I'm telling you my feelings, now you look for the rest" You can see her change between streams, just look at the first streams and then yesterday's stream and she is more comfortable with herself. I've said it before but I really like this guy, he not just jams with the music, he listens and process what is going on with the song. Just go deeper in the rabbit hole, you have a lot ahead of you.
@JoStro_3 жыл бұрын

It must be a weird feeling for her to go from years of moderate success on the underground Japanese scene to suddenly this weird and massive audience that needs to be maintained more or less overnight. The sort of thing that makes you question your own talent. This song is fantastic. I'm glad you deep dived it. This is where it gets a little tricky because she has a LOT more music from her previous persona, and some of it is really good, but it's sort of a taboo in the community to just carelessly drop names like that.
@nyazillagojira70793 жыл бұрын
You mentioned "moderate" success. I think part of that is her splitting time trying to take on the world n Live. Now "cover corp." Has said let us take that load. You drop the beat because it's what you're best at.

You've probably heard this a lot already, but thanks for helping me appreciate the songs of artists I've loved even more. From the likes of Dan Bull and DPS to Calliope. As for who you can react to next, there's the fan favorite of DemonDice. It's a open secret on what the connection between DemonDice and Calliope are, but speaking as a fan of both, I don't see the issue since I'm sure DemonDice wouldn't mind the exposure. She hasn't taken down her channel despite her new job after all, and as far as I know, she still plans on working on new songs and animating for others so the channel very much is still alive even if it is dormant right now. Alkatraz is her most famous song where she gets to showcase her storytelling and animation skills, but Sick Outta Fashion, Hazy Skyscrapers, Ragin' Ray and Jin, "You're an Ace, kid", and "Gang, Gang Kawaii" are all worth a listen too. Her entire discography fits that too. DemonDice doesn't miss.
@soasertsus3 жыл бұрын
She still uses her DD twitter account regularly and has said she plans to do new stuff this year, so safe to say I'm sure she doesn't mind the exposure. If she really had a problem with it and wanted it buried she wouldn't be on twitter every day and talking about releasing new songs after all
@JTByrd3863 жыл бұрын
Just realized I didn't mention this before. As I see it: The weight of the repeat of "It's complicated." is that the confrontation in the question leaves her at a loss for words. The rest of the lyrics are her trying to unpack "It's complicated." into something she can deal with, but electing to just lay it out for someone else to figure out. The beauty of despair. Love your work Jean!

I'd recommend you take a look at Aesop Rock (the man brings some crazy metaphors to bear and has bars for days); None Shall Pass is a great track to start on.

parts of the song can also be interpreted as her response to people now discovering other music she has done before/alongside hololive (for example as demondice) and needlessly blasting that association out there, sure spotify and youtube spoiled that for a lot of people and it's fine to know it but there's no reason to tell her or her livestream chat/twitter about it, I'm pretty sure she and anyone who enjoys her style of music already knows.
@blakeverdon44923 жыл бұрын
I believe Live Again was also kind of a tribute to her old persona as Dice. An example of which would be the lines "It's not the end of your mori (nope) 'Cause every closed door is the intro of a brand new story" and "But, maybe it's deliverance? From the pain I know is coming on when my old soul's finally gone It's not wrong to think about it, but I'll stop for tonight 'Cause we're immortalized forever in the songs that we write, ya know?" I really love how you are doing a deep dive into the lyrics Calli is writing here. It might not be your style of music but I'd enjoy your thoughts on the english version of a famous meme/game song called Bad Apple

Tokoyami Towa -- "Error" /watch?v=3UV8OZj2olg In your "Live Again" reaction, you said there was a moment where you didn't even know what she was saying because it was in Japanese, but you could still feel power and emotion. You want a whole song of that? You want a song that you can't understand a single word but makes you want to go back to church to repent for your sins? Go listen to Towa sing Error

The part when she says "I'm death you've heard of me" and so on on the next line is staying to her character as the Shinigami's apprentice but that also has a double meaning to it in this narrative song, like being a reaper made her lonely
