NOT EVERY LARGE HORNET SPECIES IS A JAPANESE GIANT HORNET. Saw a wasp acting strange, it was checking all the corners of wire mesh, it got caught in a web, when they spider came out of its hiding place for a snack, the wasp easily broke free, proving it had been faking and attacked the spider, eventually carrying the spider away. @@laer1545 In short, they help plants and gardeners (or at least the ones who care about ecology). Longer explanation: They pollinate and eat pests. Most wasps pollinate only slightly less than the average bee, because they are spending most of their time killing pests. They keep populations of various insects low. Without them, things like caterpillars and aphids would easily overpopulate and defoliate all plantlife in the area. In particular, yellowjackets like this one also like to prey on parasitic flies like mosquitoes and horse flies. They aren't just screwing over creatures because they are mean, they do it because they are territorial predators (and only yellowjackets and hornets are jerks, but they are still as helpful as the others).

I once watched a scene like this for 10 mins on the side of my house. The spider had the wasp almost completely wrapped up, but it managed to get its stinger out and hit the spider, who then stopped moving for several minutes, long enough for the wasp to get out and fly away. A minute or two later the spider started moving again. It was epic. If I was an ant it would have been like watching irl Godzilla vs Kong.

Well, the spider was NOT stung...in fact, it waited for the Yellow Jacket to attempt to sting, then the spider bit it TWICE, injecting venom into that soft tissue, so that the venom travels faster throughout the body of the hornet, killing it faster - fascinating how Nature is !! ( I watch many of my own spiders do this all the time...for being basically blind, many spiders, with the exception of jumping spiders, are precise assassins of their prey !! )
