Very courageous fighter that Benny. I was s a little young to really follow his career. I got to know about Benny, because he was the instructor of Patrick Swayze. When I saw the movie Road House, I wanted to know who was behind those fighting techniques.

Stellar interview. Many people in radio or podcasting make the mistake of interrupting their guest in the middle of a story (for better or worse). You do an excellent job with your ability to let your guest finish and when to ask follow ups. Keep up the great work!

Sensei Benny was basically kickboxing’s version of Mike Tyson. He was explosive, I wouldn’t wanna be on the receiving end of anything he threw.🤣 I would have loved to see him fight Joe Louis, but I would put my money on Sensei Benny! Besides being one of the best fighters in martial artist history, he’s was the ultimate sportsmen and great role model outside the ring!

Love this as Benny is so kind, genuine, and very thoughtfully paced - the factual stories are so intriguing as he as he tells them without exaggeration. Awesome interview Viking! Love the cinematography and editing in this too which some people may take for granted with these interviews, as a lot work goes into selecting the shots, lighting, how the stuff in the background is placed when filming these and the masterful editing. Also love the cliffhanger question!!! Looking forward to the next episode. Thank you for the amazing content Viking Samurai ⛩🎬🎥

Can’t watch the video atm but I always understood it was Joe Lewis who created it and it was simply a chance announcement by the ring a announcer calling it kickboxing- as opposed to full contact karate
@Garrett3162 жыл бұрын
Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t Joe Lewis credit Bruce Lee for helping himself come up with the concept of American Kickboxing?
@dtill53222 жыл бұрын
Neither Benny or Joe Lewis created kickboxing. It was already founded and going on in Japan in the late 1950s. Or early 1960s via Osama Noguchi and his predecessor Tatsuo Yamada. They blended karateka and boxing being fascinated with Muay Thai. Into a form of sport between Thai fighter's and Japanese karatekas. This why Benny had a lot of his early fights in Japan and Thailand. It was popular there already as a more prominent full contact form. What him and Joe Lewis are really known for. Are bringing it to the American audience and being the early pioneers of American Kickboxing in the early 70s. Which Joe Lewis created the PKA if I'm not mistaken. Him, Benny Urquidez and "Super Foot" Bill Wallace are legends for sure though! Always love listening to their stories.

@@dtill5322 well I believed the subject was American kickboxing (still haven’t watched the video…!) otherwise we could mention savate or early pankration but good info on Japan. Cheers

@@Garrett316 yes, Bruce stressed full contact even in training and incorporated PPE to enable him to do so. Jkd guys train in similar equipment riot cops deploy in. He trained Joe for karate tournaments using jkd principles
@dtill53222 жыл бұрын
@@prjkd maybe I misread bro. Sorry about that. It'd been nice if Joe Lewis were still around and he could've had them both on. Wonder if he could get Bill Wallace and his protégé "Sugar Foot" Cunningham on as guests in the future. That'd be pretty awesome guests with more insight. Pete actually was the guy beating up Jason in the sparring session. At the Seattle dojo on "No Retreat No Surrender." I remember one his earlier kickboxing matches vs a Thai fighter. He really lost that one, they stopped the Thai fighter from doing low kicks.

I saw an interview with Kathy Long on Dan “The Wolfmans” channel and she said that the very first UFC, there were no world championship competing. And it makes me wonder, what if Benny Urquedez fought in the first UFC? Maybe the end result would’ve been the same, but maybe…just maybe the result would’ve been different. P.S. the passing of Judo Gene Labell is a heartbreaking loss for the martial arts world as well as the stunt performer community, and the professional wrestling. R.I.P Gene Labell, and please when you get to the pearly gates try not to choke out St. Peter.
@robertnguyen94932 жыл бұрын
@Jake Collins you may very well be right. However, Urquedez did train in Judo under Gene Labell, so maybe Royce Gracie wouldn’t have had such an easy time.
