for the ice staff code, each of the dot patterns correspond to a number, it's a ternary counting system similar to binary but in base 3 instead of base 2 so after reading the dots you get a number. you then need to match the number to the weird symbols. those symbols are a base 4 counting system with .=0, l=1, L=2, and f=3.
