I feel that the calf kick is being implemented more because more guys are in a point-style karate/taekwondo stance or variations of it anyways. Conor Mcgregor, Sean O'Malley, Adesanya, etc. and by having that front leg exposed they can chop at the closest target. I'm not saying this is fact, but I wouldn't rule it out either.

Sorry Uncle Chael, but earliest UFC calf kick goes to Keith Hackney in UFC 4. He calf kicked Joe Son twice before famously going to town on his groin. I always thought it was Henderson too, but Hackney predates Henderson by 10 years or so.

Tao of JKD - Bruce lee used to use a wing chun style check kick that targeted the calf because the quickest distance is a straight line so it was seen as effortless and efficient. It was more of a tipe to the stop a slower roundhouse or forward movement but you could argue that Wing Chun has the origins of the Calf Kick.

You speaking in MMA specifically? Because this goes back so far in Thai and Burmese styles of fighting and even in Chinese styles as well. In Hung Gar Kuen (southern Chinese style) we were taught to kick low to break the stance.

I remember back before Phoenix jones started his super hero stuff in Seattle Washington. Ben fodor is his name. But he had a amateur mma championship match. He fought some Mexican guy from Spokane or Eastern Washington. Anyway fodor isn’t really fall hit he’s thick with muscle, his legs looked like tree trunks. But he was calf kicking this guy every chance he got, and he ended up dropping This guy from calf kicks. He won by tko because his opponent couldn’t continue. But that shit was so brutal. If you look up Phoenix jones mutual combat, he fights some racist Dude in his costume and you can just hear his kicks snapping against the other dude. It’s crazy. But that’s the first time I seen it utilized.
