Ummm Lots of irony. The poster of this video chose MJ's smooth criminal. Does that perhaps suggest that MJ is a "criminal" and stole many of his iconic dance moves, let alone the moonwalk, there were many many many a move presented that MJ did sho nuf did. MJ talked about Fred Astaire(Early day Justin Timberlake copycat...........) and Sammy Davis Jr, but what about the rest of the people who obviously inspired him obviously. Now before the MJ hive attacks I have loved MJ since I was 6 and I'm bout to turn 50. so there.

After seeing these guys do the backslide, I can say without a doubt that Michael DEFINITELY perfected the move like he said, if it was to give the illusion of being pulled back while walking forwards. draganov klashnikov I dont think it was 'perfected' by those guys. It may have been done by those guys first and they taught MJ how to do it(as MJ already admitted), but MJ clearly showed he could do it a hell of a lot better and he did. If it can be done better, than its not perfect... So far, very few can do it like MJ. MJ studied and MASTERED it! Like all his other moves. Studied from the best and became better. You can have whatever opinion you want on MJ so called "stealing moves" but he studied them and perfected them and has been acknowledged by the people he "stole" his moves from and they praised him : James Brown, Fred Astaire, Sammy Davis Jr, Jackie Wilson. So Fuck anything else you have to say about MJ.

MICHAEL WAS A THIEF
@Heal_the_World81
@Heal_the_World81 7 жыл бұрын
It's incredible to see where some of Michael Jackson's famous dance moves originated from. Michael always gave credit to his inspirations eg Fred Astaire, James Brown etc It's clear to see though that Michael learned and mastered these moves but then made them more polished and fluid and therefore better, like a Dance Move Evolution. The original Moonwalk was the back slide that was stiffer and to resemble walking backwards but being pulled forward but Michael Jackson perfected it to more like a slippery ice movement of sliding and gliding backwards and called it the Moonwalk. Most agree it looks better and more eye catching and startling. Michael never stole moves, he spoke of his influences and made dance moves better. This is what Evolution of Dance is. Taking a move, perfecting is it then improving it and taking it to a whole new level. Someone correctly pointed out that many of these moves performed in this video would have been created by even older dancers before TV existed and therfore wouldnt have been filmed. The biggest inspiration is the original creator of each dance move, the very first who created it by themselves. And to all those who created a Brand new Dance Move, Thank You Very Much.

I always knew that Michael Jackson was inspired by various styles of dance and of course her trademark the tap, but MJ did not create MoonWalker me he created the "IceWalker" because he used the tap as if sliding on the ice, and this Michael was the beauty of the dance, and what makes it unique, these steps shown in the videos are all beautiful, but does not compare to the beauty and delicacy of sliding the feet of Michael Jackson ...

0:41 - Cab Calloway said this dance move was called "The Buzz," when he did it back in the day. And it was NEVER called the "moonwalk." It got that name because some moron wasn't listening very well. What it WAS called was the "mime walk." It's what mimes do when they're pretending to walk forward into the wind, and being blown backward.

All those men perfected it. The Moonwalk looked smoother when we see Michael doing it but that is because he had flat soles on the bottom of his shoes. These other men had those metal large headed nails hammered into the bottom of their shoes. They were pretty smooth despite that. Remember, Michael could look back on these men. Those men had no one to look back on. Sammy Davis Jr. was dancing like this at 5 years old. There are clips of him tap dancing, spinning. Smooth as all Heck. We must not forget Sammy who began singing and dancing in the 1930's movies at 5. Most people take a lifetime to perfect and he, as far as I'm concerned, must have danced right out of the womb - NO EXPLANATION WILL SUFFICE! I would suggest you watching the best performance I have ever seen incorporating dancing and singing at the same time. Michael lip synched when he was performing. He danced so much he'd be too out of breath and he was a perfectionist. So was Sammy. I will grab the clip and put spaces in the link. On YT if you put a link into your comment most of the time, they put it into the SPAM folder. So, just remove the links - The 1st link is his performance of Mr. Bojangles from the Flip Wilson Show - you will not regret this: https :// www . youtube . com/watch?v=LKP8TbtLFew This clip says he was 7, I remember reading that he was 5 or 6 He is PERFECTED when most of us can't walk straight yet! https : // www . youtube . com/watch?v=f4qZFDj7cAc Here is Sammy at 5 or 6 mature before his time https : //www . youtube . com/watch?v=6VW08_rlsD8 - REMEMBER TO REMOVE THE SPACES! I hope you like it! ;) Cab Calloway was my Uncle Jimmy's favorite entertainer. In fact, they kind of looked alike! I am half Southern Italian and got the light skin from the dot of Scottish blood in my father's side - odd because my father was part Egyptian. My mother did not know where I came from, but blamed my father for my whiteness anyhow! I knew all these men at a young age having a mother who followed Jazz and Blues performers around the country. She had one scrapbook and it was all clippings out of newspapers and magazines of these great men. Most people, of all races and ethnicities do not know the history of these great performers, the great blues singers of old or Gospel like Mahalia Jackson. My mother believed That Mahalia was God and Lena Horne was Jesus Christ because no one could touch Divinity like those women. I am this white, and I know them all. Hey, can't judge a book by it's bleach white cover! ;) Thank you again for your Divine work!

although the modern variation of the moonwalk was popularized by bill bailey, and was called "back slide", but that doesn't mean the buzz came first, the earliest evidence of the moonwalk was in 1870, where a jazz singer explained a dance move he saw at the theater as "if the person was being pulled back while on ice skates"

MJ did not create the moonwalk, which is very obvious from this amazing video. But he did perfect it, and you can tell all these dudes influenced MJ.

I used to watch Fred Astaire and Genger Rogers and all of those classic 30's to 40's movies and music when I was a kid in 6th grade and my family asked me why I watch old movies and not ET Come home or Disney. I told them ET and Disney were for kids.

I would love to see the haters on this feed dance...why can't we give profs to everyone... Michael Jackson's definitely can dance, sing,compose, write, direct and produce awesome music videos... You do not get to his level of stardom....without pure talent and the it factor.... He was a perfectionist and a hardworker.....He would spend hours upon hours on his dance moves.... So all the haters have a right to your opinion.... However, I have mine.... mic drop...

Of course the title is just to get people to watch… there is no "origin" of the moonwalk, for cryin' out loud, it's a basic staple of mime repertory since whenever. BUT the dancing is great and that's the point. Lotta kids don't that "street dancing" goes back probably to the earliest days of streets and certainly way back to early American history.

You should name each of these gentlemen they deserve an honorary mention. Remember that the world only saw black and white back then, this black and white men and women did great in trying to make people forget about color for a couple of seconds.

I wouldn't blame him for copying it. The only thing is that I feel Michael Jackson was so gifted that he could have invent his own style which would have been much better than only giving the moonwalk it's final form (until someone else brings another perfection to it …). The guy was too much under pressure. Money's pressure …

@BrotherRAW First off "minstrel" men where white men who painted their faces black and acted like black entertainers in a spoof. to make fun of black people. I did see one minstrel dancer in the clip but the rest where Vaudeville dancers and tap dancers. a couple did do the "backslide" aka "moonwalk", but most did sliding moves from tap. Most of these black dancers were not trained back them just like street dancers, but once the rest of America saw they copied the style and made it popular.

I echo the comments made about MJ taking what he saw and perfecting it. I also want to COMMEND the people who did the research and those who edited the vid. I'm sure if MJ were here, he would be be first to give proper respect to those who have gone before him. All have stories of struggle, be it with technique, chasing after fame, and/or with the racism that plagued performers in the early days. Do you notice that the woman, Eleanor Parker, was dressed in a tux and tails? There was an undertone of sexual ambiguity back in those days. Marlene Dietrich comes to mind. Check her out sometime. THANK YOU for shinning the spotlight on those pioneers. They deserve the credit.

It's funny how people are discussing whether or not Michael Jackson stole the moon walk from anyone. Because if you knew anything about Michael Jackson you would know that is being able to imitate all those moves was his claim to fame and the fact that he could sing the individuals in the video their song and with such soul and passion

Uhmm. Yes, It's called the slide or the backslide. Never understood the frenzy over it in 1984. I saw it live via a talent show in 1977 which included a front slide that blew me away. We 'dancers' each have our own version. Thumbs up if you are over 40 and can still slide, pop, lock , break and spin. I can.

@92bravo - Probably because of how smooth and seamless MJ's version was. Most other versions aren't as fluid-looking, they tend to look choppier. With MJ's version it kind of looks like a single motion and looks like it's done so easily it looks almost mindless. Actually I think MJ got better at it over the years, the one in 1984 actually looks like he had to concentrate and he bounced off his toe stand after only a second or so. From the late 80s-early 2000s MJ could stay up over 10 seconds.

@miketh2005 - I found someone trying to do an "Earthwalk" (Frontslide): /watch?v=3BRQpgH1SEs It looks nowhere near as good as MJ or a top-level breakdancer would make it look though IMO but it's good enough to give you the basic idea of what it looks like.

0:36 - 0:40 - if MJ didn't invent these slick moves, he sure as hell popularized them (and I might say refined...or revived the style). Slick stuff, I never knew they danced like that. And yes, smooth criminal is hilarious and appropriate. :D
