KAMIYA, YOUR VOICE HAS MATURED SO MUCH!!! Let's be on the up-and-up. Izay's first character song was rough, to put it plainly, it was really hard to call it refined, but it was okay. Hiroshi Kamiya has, since then, released a series of albums where you can hear him really mastering his vocal range, and especially with help from Ono Daisuke on their show DGS. On another note, this does feel like a song to Shinra. Everyone is making it all romantic or sexual, I don't think so. I see it as very figurative, while it carries sexual themes, I don't think that is how Izaya ever means it. I see it more as him cutting his relationship with Shinra, his only friend. They were shitty friends, to be honest, but still, it was the only one he ever called 'friend' and honestly felt angry with himself over. All you people who never read the light novels, after Izaya leaves from his kidnapping and torture episode, before his sisters run up, Izaya realizes he would most definitely lose Shinra after all of this. He feels that hurt, but also knows it is too late to turn back now, his own nature in conflict with himself, he turns and punches a light pole, enough to hurt himself and regain control over his feelings. In a sense, commit an act of self harm, because he's going to be perfectly alone once this is over, and he knows it.

I believe so, yes. I like to think that Shizuo liked Izaya back from the moment he told him that he is not afraid of him but could never figure those feelings out properly cause he hates himself soo very much, he thinks that he doesnt deserve to be loved and love someone back. But after Izaya left... he realized that he indeed liked him. In SH he even asked Celty what could have been if they just got along with each other (like seriously, he brings Izaya up on his OWN; where before he would always get mad if someone even mentions him) and in his final song he basically sings about how he misses him and that he now finally realizes that he has lost his dearest person. Kind of tragic actually...but at the same time I am happy that their love is somewhat canon (:

Am I the only one who doesn't ship Shizaya? I feel he is closer to Shinra and actually thinks of him as his only friend. Pramita Bhattacharya ok actually trying to encompass shizuo and izaya's relationship in a few lines is really hard but you pretty much resumed it yourself. first of all, yes, it's pretty obvious that izaya sees shinra as basically his only friend, but the true reason why shinra can be close to izaya is that he doesn't care at all about humans or human behaviour in general. he sure has some kind of morality (i think..... somewhere...... in there.......) and he doesn't really condemn izaya's actions, but that's simply because he couldn't care less, actually, and izaya is definitely aware of that, nothing special to "observe", to study from his point of view. on the other way around, shizuo defies logic - he's human, but he also seems to be "gifted" with inhuman abilities. he defies logic, as i said, he's no common human being. when something isn't common it's pretty obvious for it to be overlooked, rejected or despised by society. but, once again, shizuo defies logic and everyone, like EVERYONE, izaya enjoys tormenting, watching or getting attention from truly loves him. and here it goes my personal speculation. izaya is no common human being himself. no further discussion on that. he's also aware of that, and it's pretty obvious he's not capable of avoiding occasional self deprecation. actually, i think he basically has to constantly live with it. now, his inner argument must be something like "he's not normal and he still manages to draw people to him. why doesn't it happen to me?" izaya isn't compassionate towards​ people, the world and not even himself. he claims to love people but it's pretty obvious he doesn't. he's broken to the core. "i can't have that? well you shouldn't have that neither" and so he tries to make his life a total mess. the only way izaya can draw attention to himself is only through shizuo. whereas other people simply ignore his despicable deeds, shizuo is ready to literally drive izaya's ass out anytime, and it actually doesn't take any effort. izaya WANTS that kind of confrontation. izaya NEEDS that confrontation. at the end of the day, it all revolves around shizuo. every move izaya makes to set ikebukuro on fire is to get to shizuo. shizuo, somehow, motivates izaya. izaya's character literally messed my life up. it was like watching myself finally acting according to my true desires throughout the whole series. considering him as a fictional counterpart of myself, the kind of motivation - albeit negative, but that's just a consequence of how izaya is - shizuo gives him is simply beautiful. i don't really like talking about "love" when it comes to shizaya for obvious reasons - i mean after what I've written who could talk about genuine, pure love? - also because izaya's character is too complicated to focus on something too simplistic like "love". however, their relationship is the most genuine one izaya can hope to have in his life. it suits him. in the light novels he refuses to go back to ikebukuro after their final fight. that's, metaphorically, his way of coping with the heartbreak. it's fucked up but still beautiful, from a certain point of view. and if we want to sum it up, it can be "love". anyway, sorry for any mistake but it's late in the night and English is not my first language, but i hope i cleared some of all this shizaya thing for you

Anyway, I don't think this song proves Shizaya is canon or whatever even though I ship them but the way you say "this is about a man ...and his girl" etc is pretty homophobic....Just because the original singer sang it as a song about a man and woman doesn't mean everyone who sings it has to sing about a hetero relationship.
