A couple things to add: 1. The reason why MLS wasn’t following the new rules regarding the yellow card for coming off the goal line during a PK, is because this was a continuation of the 2020 season which had started before the pandemic. They had played 2 games before everything shut down and at some point during when the season was on hold, FIFA had changed the rule. MLS then eventually continued the season and made the choice to not implement the new rules until the 2021 season. 2. The reason Orlando celebrated after the defender made the PK save, is because the ref made the decision to blow the final whistle, indicating the game was over and Orlando had won and advanced to the next round. New York then immediately protested and rightfully suggested that Orlando still needed to make their kick to win. 3. The “sports bra” at the end is actually worn to track the players movement, total miles ran, top speed, as well as other data. It’s very common for pro soccer players to wear during training & games.

So the reason MLS hadn't adopted the new rule yet for yellow cards on a penalty is because they were still in the 2020 season, the new rules from IFAB (rules guys) was supposed to take place in the European/global season that had just recently started in those regions. Since MLS's season was already in progress, they didn't update the rule.

What I’ll add as a soccer referee: 1) You may not make a substitution during penalty kicks, but you can indeed put a field player in goal after the goalkeeper is shown the red card. Jomboy nailed this rule. 2) The goalkeeper who was sent off is actually technically no longer a player and Orlando is playing with 10 men. He’s not allowed to even be on the field after seeing the red card and should have been immediately escorted to the locker room, not even allowed to stay and watch the rest. 3) In general, it was a shitshow from the refs and their only saving grace was the video assistant referee in their ears guiding them through all the calls (and they still missed some details). We’re talking the center referee, AR1, AR2, 4th official, VAR, and at least 1 AVAR all missing something in this situation.

Basically that's all correct. What I will add is that the yellow card for coming off the line rule has indeed been pulled already in most leagues and I don't quite understand why it hasn't in this. It's an absolutely horrible rule to a situation that is already un-soccery enough.
@offthehookproductions4481
@offthehookproductions4481 3 жыл бұрын
@Jonas Helmke The current MLS season began before the 20/21 rules were applied. Rather than change rules part way through a season, they opted to play out the remainder if the season under the rules they began with. Under the 20/21 rules, the Orlando keeper would not have received the yellow card but would have been given a warning instead. And even if he did get a yellow, it would not have been considered a second yellow as under the new rules all yellow cards are wiped clean heading into a penalty shoot out.

Infuriating as a fan of Orlando or soccer in general. *Like the rule about not subbing during penalty kicks is BURNED into your brain at a young age if you play soccer. Probably will be changed at some point but it's a very old and known rule. *Another point. Goalkeeper coming off his line was RARELY enforced in soccer until very recently with the use of VAR. And even then it's not often called. It was kind of an unwritten rule keepers could get a jump. I'm not sure what the equivalent in baseball is. So yes it's technically against the rules to come off your line but for these goalkeepers careers they've probably been called on it maybe once. Part of that is just my take. I'll end this rant with: BALL DON'T LIE. And thank you for the Breakdown!

I was a keeper in competitive leagues, I appreciate the more modern approach to accurate calls. However, there are many trick kicks that would give reason for a goalie to come off the line when the kicker plants for a kick. I recall a play in hockey that was called offside and a no-goal on the play bc a player exiting the ice onto the bench didn't lift his skate in time and it was milliseconds of a problem with no contribution to the play. It's those types of 'accurate' calls that get me angry.

So just to make things clear about the "updated rules" mentioned at 1:12, it's a little complicated. The rules get changed based on the standard FIFA calendar which is based in Europe. So new rules get written in the European offseason which is in the middle of the MLS season, and traditionally those updated rules do take effect when the next MLS season starts, rather than midseason. The European season mirrors a typical NBA or NHL season while MLS is a summer league, due to having teams in New York, Minnesota, etc.
