About 25 years ago I had a large collection of ornamental pheasants, quail, partridges, doves and pigeons. Had everything from the common button quail to nicobar pigeons. 2 pair of Victoria crowned pigeons. Australian crested doves. We sold our old home to purchase a home here in western Maryland with 22 acres we purchased or current home with my bird hobby in mind it's perfect my lane is over a mile long closest neighbor is over 2 miles away. Watching this video makes me want to start building enclosures my old enclosures were 20 feet wide by 30 long 12 feet tall. I even have a large heated building with sizable winter enclosures for the species that can't handle the cold winter months. I've been looking at prices of eggs and birds online just like everything else the price has risen ALOT. Not tooting my own horn but I was good at raising crested wood partridges don't even know if there still kept in the states I'm sure they are.

It sounds the perfect place to start up again! But yes, not only birds but I expect feed costs too so it's a more expensive hobby. Still, beautiful birds though.

IF I built an aviary I'd make it with slide out trays so you can dump the old stuff and put clean, new substrate in. As someone who has never done this before and has no experience, I'm assuming most mite/lice problems come from the stuff on the ground or at least it provides a habitat for the critters.

Sorry to hear that! I have quite a few foxes across the farm but they haven't really been interested in the pheasant runs. Could you try adding some more places for him to hide; sticks, branches etc so he feels safer? It's hard to know what's best

Hi Geoff question from a non bird keeper so sorry if it’s a daft one. Why don’t you let the grey pheasant sit on her eggs? Surely nature does it best?
@BrimwoodFarm
@BrimwoodFarm 2 жыл бұрын
Not a daft question at all, Chris. She didn't show any signs of sitting. Also, if we left the first clutch with her she wouldn't lay any more. So this way we get her to lay a few more eggs and make sure the ones we do have can be cared for properly.

Will different types of Pheasant breed with one another if allowed or do they stick to their own kind?
@BrimwoodFarm
@BrimwoodFarm 2 жыл бұрын
Some can definitely cross; which is why we've ended up with a Golden x Amhurst. I bought him as a golden hen ... definitely NOT that. Tragopans are a different genus so I'm not sure they can mix, though perhaps with other tragopan varieties?

Maybe if you played jungle noises 24/7 egg production would go up. It worked on my chickens here in Alaska. Problem is it draws in the ravens too. And a couple of arctic terns too who think they are fling over the equator.

Hey, just wondering. I'm going to be building my bird enclosure soon and am wondering if it's better to have an open top or closed top enclosure? I currently have grey jungle fowl hen and a silver pheasant pair all young from this season. I'm going to be making it pretty big with each run about 10ft wide by 20 ish long. I haven't quite measured out but want to give them enough room to be happy.
@BrimwoodFarm
@BrimwoodFarm 18 күн бұрын
Exciting! I would definitely put a closed top. Pheasants, and to a degree jungle fowl, aren't as domesticated as chickens so once they've flown out, it'll be hard to get them back.

@@BrimwoodFarm hey, sorry a little bit of confusion. I mean open as in just netting/ mesh vs fully covered roof
@BrimwoodFarm
@BrimwoodFarm 18 күн бұрын
@josecruz021 oooh, sorry. My field coops are just netting as each run has some form of cover - a box, shelter etc for them to get into. My sturdier aviaries don't have boxes so are 2/3 mesh, 1/3 covered with tin for some shelter. I do find my birds are quite happy in the open top but depends on your climate etc

@@BrimwoodFarm ahhh gotcha! Thank you so much. I'm in lower NC so it can get fairly hot and fairly cold and sometimes rainy and windy. They are in a shaded corner. Under a tree, so I'll probably do a 50/50 roof. I hope to get more species soon! It's so fun having these birds and i can't wait for them to color up.
